Free test taking strategies used by top students!. Compiled by interviewing over 1000 students on this subject by Enrique Romero (Author of ebook How to Study and The Survival Guide for College Students: Your Subconscious programming is in the driver's seat.)
1. In order to answer a test question correctly I recommend reading the entire question up to three times before you begin to answer it. I believe that half of the answer is in the question and top students read the entire question in order to understand what the question is all about before answering the question. Read it up to three times and then, if you continue to not comprehend the question then you can come back to that question at a later time after you have answered the other questions that you are 100% sure that you know how to answer.
2. It is important to show the work that was done in order to get an answer to a math question when answering a math (or any other type of science question) during a test. When answering math tests a lot of people rush to answer the questions and do not show how they got to their answer. Top students budget their test taking time by answering the questions they are sure they know what the answers is right away. Not showing work causes the professor to question the degree to which you understand the problem and can further be cause for concern because some professors see it as an indication of cheating because the work that is supposed to have been done in order to get to the answer you wrote to a math or science problem is not shown and this can be interpreted as copying from another student. Avoid this common problem by showing work.
3. Become aware that there are certain words you might not know the meaning of and spend your time during the test (after you have answered everything you can) going back to the questions you do not comprehend yet and try to understand the context (the surrounding text) in order to get clues as to what the meaning of the word is. Read the entire question twice and then answer the question.
4. I recommend creating an essay outline with key topics that will be written about in your essay. When writing an essay during a test one of the most common mistakes that students make is not creating an outline of what they are going to write about before starting to write their essay. Create an outline (key concepts, ideas, proofs) that back up the arguments in your essay before writing it. This gives mental space to think and this in turn gives you the freedom and ability to choose what you want to write about given the key concepts that you will relate to that you have written beforehand. This is done so that you can write your essay without focusing on the main topics and this allows you to better focus on the paragraphs instead of the key concepts because they have already been set in stone.
