United Nations Development Programme
Key information
Creation: the United Nations Development Programme was created in November 1965 by the United Nations General Assembly. It arose from the merger of the Expanded Programme of Technical Assistance (EPTA, launched in 1949) and the United Nations Special Fund (created in 1958).
Main activities: the UNDP acts on five critical areas that share a common aim, namely development and the well-being of people in the broadest sense:
reduction of poverty and racial inequalities
democratic governance
crisis prevention and post-disaster support
environment and the energy sector
prevention and eradication of diseases (AIDS, Ebola, etc.).
Key words:
Development: in a strictly economic sense, this is the qualitative and sustainable improvement of an economy and its functioning. Currently, the term ‘development’ is often considered more broadly, covering human, social, political and environmental aspects, among others.
Extreme poverty: people living on less than $1.25 a day.
Governance: way of governing or managing. In this precise context, we are specifically talking about democratic governance. This notion goes beyond the traditional framework of public action and includes new forms of civic responsibility. The state remains the central force, though not exclusive.
Poverty line: the limit value below which a person is considered to be poor and is known as ‘vulnerable’.
Sustainable development: a mode of development through which the needs of future generations are satisfied just as much as those of the present generation.
