Motion for a European Parliament resolution on fighting discrimination based on race, religion and nationality
The European Parliament,
– having regard to Article 14(1) of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights,
– having regard to Article 33(1) of the 1951 Refugee Convention,
– having regard to Rule 133 of its Rules of Procedure,
A. whereas countries, including the United States of America (the US), that signed and ratified the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the 1967 Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees are obliged to respect the rule of international law on refugees;
B. whereas on 27 January 2017 the President of the US signed an executive order banning citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the US for a period of 90 days and suspending the country’s refugee system for a period of 120 days;
1. Emphasises that respect for cultural diversity is an essential element in fostering democratisation, human rights and conflict prevention;
2. Stresses that the decisive battle against terrorism does not justify a general suspicion against people of a certain origin or religion;
3. Calls on the EU to fight discrimination based on the race, religion or nationality of asylum seekers, which is a serious breach of human rights and the rule of law.
