On 27 January, Members exchanged with representatives from the Finnish Border Guard and the Commission, following the adoption in Finland of a temporary law, the Act on Temporary Measures to Combat Instrumentalised Migration.

Finnish officials outlined the reasoning behind the newly proposed law and provided an overview of the developments along the Russian borders. The Commission shared its initial assessment of the law's compatibility with EU regulations but noted that it had yet not been enacted. The Commission emphasized its intention to monitor the situation closely.

During the discussions, LIBE Members raised concerns about law's alignment with EU law and international obligations. While acknowledging the challenges posed by the situation, Members reiterated the importance of safeguarding the right to asylum and avoiding any actions that could lead to pushbacks.
