The US Department of Energy (DOE) is moving closer to demonstrating two advanced reactor designs, but with one major problem: obtaining up to 20% enriched fuel needed for the reactors. Without delivery of high-assay low-enriched uranium (Haleu) to fuel fabricators to produce the fuel assemblies and pebbles needed to test the reactor designs, the agency is increasingly unlikely to meet its 2027 target date for advanced reactor deployment.
