If you love high-concept films, chances are you’ve long been a fan of filmmaker Christopher Landon – the man who’s never met a genre he couldn’t mash. After taking a detour into more family-friendly territory with We Have A Ghost, the director of Freaky and the Happy Death Day movies is back in full-blown horror territory with Drop, boasting a short, simple premise: a woman on a date receives sinister AirDrops from someone in the vicinity, imploring her to kill the man she’s just met. Watch the trailer:
For all the modernity of AirDrop as a concept (for the uninitiated, it’s when you can send images and more to people near you without disclosing your identity – largely, you’d just use it to send a few snaps to a mate), there’s something Hitchcockian to the set-up here – a pure genre exercise, where the tension can only ratchet up. Leading the film is The White Lotus’ Meghann Fahy, whose Violet finds herself on the receiving end of terrifying messages. Fingers crossed it marks another horror ride from Landon, who has long worked with Blumhouse – and came to Drop after exiting Scream 7.
Can Violet find her AirDrop attacker? Will Landon land another hit? Are we turning off our AirDrop settings right this very moment? ‘Probably’, ‘hopefully’, and ‘yes’, respectfully. Drop drops in UK cinemas from 11 April.
