It was at KMEN that Don met his first
partner to be, Fred Lindholm. In 1972 they
were told about an AM/FM radio station for
sale in Panama City, Florida.....A chance to
be an owner!! Don’s father and mother
mortgaged their home and gave Don the
$18,000 needed for his down payment. Don
and Fred drove across the country to begin
a new life and form The Janus Broadcasting
Company. Don and Fred quickly brought
their Southern California radio expertise to
bear on the contemporary formatted
WGNE-AM and took the station to the #1
position in the market.
On June 26, 1975, Don married his wife
Elke. Don and Fred donated WGNE-AM to
Gulf Coast Community College in Panama
City, Florida, making it the first Community
College in the Nation to have both an AM
and an FM radio station. They then
announced the purchase of WDLP-AM
which they paired with WGNE-FM.
On October 1, 1984 Don and Fred sold The
Janus Broadcasting Company.
Don and Doug Grimm, a friend from the
television business formed the U.S.
BROADCASTING COMPANY in 1985 and
acquired WJYR-FM, Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina.
In 1987 they purchased WREZ AM & FM in
Montgomery, Alabama and WDEN AM & FM
in Macon, Georgia. In 1990 they acquired
KTOM AM & FM in Monterey/Salinas,
California and in 1997 The Piedmont and
the Ocmulgee stations in Macon, Georgia
were added.
THE U.S. BROADCASTING COMPANY was
sold in 2001.
In 1997 Don purchased KWRP-FM in San
Jacinto, California and was successful in
moving the station into Riverside/San
Bernardino, the 27th market. In 1999 Don
put KTMK-FM, the first radio broadcasting
service on the air in Temecula, California.
In 2003, the call letters for KWRP-FM were
changed to KWIE-FM and the station
became "WILD 96.1 - Non-Stop Hip-Hop and
