What to Read Next

In the episode, Joel rescued new character Abby from a horde of infected that were hidden beneath the snow. Unfortunately for him, he had no idea that she was determined to get revenge for the hospital massacre he had committed at the end of season 1.

Abby revealed that she is the daughter of the Firefly doctor who was meant to operate on Ellie in the hope of producing a cure, and who was murdered by Joel before he could. Joel saving Abby from the horde didn't change her mind, and she beat him within an inch of his life.

Ellie arrived at the mansion, but tragically entered the room just in time to see Abby kill Joel. Now, Ellie is out for revenge.

Speaking to Esquire, Tommy actor Luna teased what will happen to his character now that his older brother has been killed.

"There's this scene that follows the events of the second episode. I won't get into it too heavily, but there's a transition that happens, a passing of the torch so to speak," he said.

"It felt not only was it happening in the story but in our work and in our production. It's exciting moving forward. It's a terribly tragic episode. But now the world expands."

Luna also revealed his reaction to finding out that Tommy wouldn't be present when Joel gets killed. In the game, Tommy was in the scene instead of Dina.

"[Showrunner] Craig Mazin sent me this Bible-long text about where Tommy is and what he's doing instead. And it floored me. I was so excited," he said.

"I'm getting goosebumps now thinking about it. The idea there would be this role reversal where it would be Dina rather than Tommy, that works for her to be there. Somebody who still loves Joel and sees him as family, and would be devastated when this all goes down."

The change also meant that he got to be involved in the episode's huge battle, which he found both exhilarating and daunting.

"Thankfully, we had the great Mark Mylod, who has experience with large set-pieces," Luna explained, referring to the Game of Thrones director.

"He's able to balance beautiful cinematic vocabulary with what's important from a character basis."

The Last of Us season 2 airs on Mondays at 2am and 9pm on Sky Atlantic and streaming service NOW in the UK. The show airs on HBO in the US.
