The Mandalorian season four is not happening, at least according to a report shared by The Hollywood Reporter.

The news has yet to be officially confirmed by the show's creators themselves, but there haven't been any positive recent updates about a fourth season either so it's not looking good.

Star Wars has, however, confirmed a new movie focusing on the two main characters from the series, the Mandalorian and Grogu. The film is called, yes you guessed it, The Mandalorian & Grogu.

It will be directed by original Mandalorian show creator Jon Favreau, who said: "I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created... The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

For those still hoping for news of a fourth season of the TV show, here's what we know.

Is The Mandalorian getting a season 4, and when might it be released?

According to THR, The Mandalorian season four has been canned and replaced instead by the upcoming film The Mandalorian & Grogu (after previous reports the show was delayed).

What to Read Next

The Hollywood Reporter claimed that "instead of a fourth season, Disney decided to pivot The Mandalorian to launch its first Star Wars feature film since The Rise of Skywalker."

In even worse news, The Mandalorian & Grogu is scheduled to be released in May 2026, meaning that fans who are desperate for some form of a follow-up will have to wait over a year for the continuation.

If this is true, it would seem as though those season-four scripts that creator Jon Favreau had reportedly completed have indeed been reimagined into The Mandalorian & Grogu.

It's unclear whether or not the movie will mark the end of Mando and Grogu's journey together or if it will rejuvenate the TV series and then lead into an official season four. But we'll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Who would come back to the cast for The Mandalorian season 4?

Assuming there will be some sort of a continuation after the movie, the cast will heavily depend on what transpires. But we would expect to see the return of Din Djarin – with Pedro Pascal back as the titular Mandalorian – and Grogu.

One person who (probably) won't be back is Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, considering the combined forces of Din, Bo-Katan and Grogu – as well as a flaming ship – saw him burned to a crisp.

Other potential returns for a possible fourth season of The Mandalorian include Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Carson Teva.

Sadly, Carl Weathers won't join them as magistrate Greef Karga – he passed away in February 2024.

We could also see some new faces added to the cast of any fourth season, as Sigourney Weaver is joining the upcoming movie in an undisclosed role. The Alien star confirmed in August 2024 that she had "met Grogu" and was planning to film her scenes before heading to London to star in a big new stage production of The Tempest.

The Mandalorian season 4 plot: How does The Mandalorian season 3 ending set up season 4?

Given the outcome of things thus far, we would assume the plot of The Mandalorian season four will largely depend on what happens in The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Since the movie has yet to make its way to theatres, we'll have to do our best guesswork from the season three finale of Mando.

In truth, The Mandalorian's season three finale felt more like a series finale than something that set up what's to come.

After the Moff was defeated, Din Djarin adopted Grogu as his son. As a result, Grogu is now Din Grogu – and a Mandalorian apprentice. The duo headed back to Nevarro, where Greef Karga gifted them a cabin outside of town to live in.

Now that he's got Grogu to train, Din Djarin tells Carson Teva that he's going to be "more selective" in his assignments, offering to work for the New Republic "on a case-by-case basis" – but it's an arrangement that'll be kept between him and Carson.

Nevarro has a new marshal, too, but it's not Din Djarin. It's the rebuilt IG-11 (voiced by Taika Waititi).

And that's where we ended season three, with Din Djarin and Grogu chilling in their new home.

This means The Mandalorian & Grogu has a relatively clean slate to start from. The standalone film could tie up this era of Star Wars storytelling, but it could also spin off into a new story.

Talking to Variety after the film's announcement at Star Wars Celebration 2023, Filoni spoke about the thread that will tie all the Disney+ series to date into the movie.

"On a base level, I would just say the coming conflict, the growing idea that the empire wasn't as defeated as a lot of people want to believe and that the remnant is out there," he said.

Filoni continued: "We saw that from the very beginning with The Mandalorian and how Giancarlo's [Esposito] character Gideon was plotting. There are always people that are willing to undermine something that the Republic is trying to build and put back on its feet.

"I grew up with a lot of stories in the expanding universe that were exploring what happened after Return of the Jedi. There has been this, for fans, idea that there was a new Republic and a remnant Empire, and the conflict persisted after Return of the Jedi, even though the heroes won and were more in control. What did that control look like?

"And since Force Awakens is 30 years on from Return of the Jedi, we have room then to tell another story. That's what I'm coalescing into this time period."
