Vertigo: Trailer, certificate and where to watch
Hitchcock's classic psychological thriller with James Stewart and Kim Novak
Year: 1958
Certificate: pg
James Stewart stars as John 'Scottie' Ferguson, one of cinema's most intriguing protagonists. An ex-cop-turned-private eye, Scottie is asked to keep an eye on a woman (Kim Novak), the wife of a friend. He becomes obsessed with her, and events take several turns before a tragic conclusion.
An intoxicating mix of melodrama and thriller, Vertigo is considered one of Hitchcock's best films, and is held in high regard by fans and critics alike. Melodrama was, at the time of Vertigo's release, something of a derogatory term - and to many still is - but here's an example of a film that has its melodramatic elements (heightened emotions and overblown plot) in perfect harmony. Hitchcock balances the extremes, controlling the narrative to unfurl slowly in a story that's not soapy, but deeply, darkly psychological. (128 minutes)
