Fierce musical drama exploring the darker side of social media
Year: 2022
Certificate: 15
Sasha is in trouble. Played by Nicole Lecky (who also created the show, based on her one-woman play), she's a young east Londoner and wannabe singer who, after a major bust-up with her boyfriend and a massive row with her mum (Jessica Hynes) and stepdad (Paul Kaye), leaves home.
Forced to make her own way, she throws herself into the party lifestyle of new friend Carly, a social media influencer. Sasha's lifestyle collides with the wild and seedy performance style of the influencer, where followers are currency and 'image modelling' makes money. Can Sasha learn to play the game? Is it a game she even wants to play?
A bold, angry, dark drama, there's no fairytale about to happen. It's as much cautionary tale as rags-to-riches. There's a seriousness to it, a commentary on an online world that many young people live as consumers or aspire to be content creators, but that has a deeply exploitative dark side.
Lecky and her powerful musical interludes are the making of the show. Whether you're into the music or not, they provide Sasha with an escape and an outlet to shout about her life and what makes her so angry and anguished - and there's plenty that makes her angry. The piece performed in the benefits office puts The Full Monty in the shade. (Six episodes)
