Huma Abdedin has revealed she had to persuade Children's Services to let her keep her young son after her husband sent a selfie of himself with an erection while laying in bed next to their child.
Hillary Clinton's top aide recalled how in fall 2016 her husband Anthony Weiner walked into a room while their four year-old son Jordan slept next to her to tell her about an upcoming New York Post story, she says she knew would be 'really bad.'
Abedin was bogged down with work trying to campaign with Clinton as Trump continued to rise when Weiner confessed that the Post had a scandalous photo of him that included their son. He had snapped himself with an erection visible under his boxers while sleeping next to Jordan.
At first she assumed that the photo must be of the two out in public which he then sent to some woman, only to discover the grim truth hours later. 'I had given up on expecting him to respect the vows of our marriage, but our child’s image being shared felt more violent than any humiliation I had faced in the past,' she wrote.
She emailed what little information she had warning Clinton’s adviser Philippe Reines, 'I think I have a problem.'
In her new memoir Both/And, Human Abedin reveals she was investigated by Children's Services in 2016 after her son, Jordan, became involved in one of her husband's notorious sexting scandals
Abedin's husband, Anthony Weiner, a former New York Congressman and now a convicted sex offender, sexted this photo of his erection next to his sleeping son to a young woman. The photo was released in 2016 among many others
While Abedin didn't have much information she admitted one thing she knew for sure was that: 'it wouldn’t be as bad as Anthony said. It would be worse. And it was.'
The next morning Abedin was devastated when she finally saw the photo which she deemed as the final infraction.
'This crossed into another level of degradation, a violation of the innocence of our child. There were no more “What were you thinking?” questions left in me.' After knowing each other more than a decade and six years of marriage, Abedin resigned: 'It was over.'
She immediately confronted her husband yelling that she was publicly announcing their separation, he was forbidden to stay in their New York City apartment going forward, and he was never spend any nights alone with our son ever again.
After drafting a statement with Philippe, she called Clinton and others who she knew would be impacted and questioned about the scandal.
But she know had to deal with New York state Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) who were sent to determine if Jordan was 'safe.' ACS informed Abedin and Weiner that calls has been placed to them after the photo was released which prompted them to open an investigation.
Abedin's highly anticipated memoir Both/And: A Life in Many Worlds was released on November 2
Abedin described the first meeting as 'tense and uncomfortable' as a young woman and two or three men in suits asked Weiner questions that he couldn't remember the answers to such as: 'When was the photo taken? Who was it sent to? Were there others? What was happening in the image? Was the child awake?'
Abedin was questioned next as investigators asked if she had 'any prior knowledge of Anthony taking suggestive pictures in which Jordan was present' which she adamantly denied.
'Never, for one second, did I think Anthony would do anything to harm or expose our child. Ever. Until now,' she wrote.
She became very 'protective' when the woman said Jordan also needed to be interviewed but eventually gave in. Jordan was in good spirits talking to the woman who at one point asked how his parents punished him. The young boy replied, 'No cookies!' Abedin remembered.
The investigator allegedly asked Abedin 'if it was possible (her) assessment of Anthony’s parenting lacked the accuracy it would have had if (she)was present in the home on a regular basis,' instead of on the campaign trail.
But the by the end of the first meeting 'the investigator told me she could see that our family was closely bonded, it felt like things would be OK,' she wrote.
Abdedin was already in the national spotlight in 2016, as then-presidential candidate Hilary Clinton's top aide, when her husband Anthony Weiner, a New York Congressman, was ousted as a sex offender in one of the country's most infamous sexting scandals.
Weiner was caught sending multiple inappropriate text messages to several young women. Once of the most shocking photos that was revealed was a photo of Weiner's erection clearly outlined through his white underwear as he laid in bed shirtless with his young son, Jordan, next to him. Jordan was four when the scandal broke.
In an excerpt from her upcoming memoir Both/And, she recounts the night she learned of the disturbing photo and the battle to keep her son that ensued.
Abedin wrote that following the release of the disturbing photo, she had several meetings with Children's Services to determine if her young son was 'safe'
Abedin was working as Hilary Clinton's top aide during her campaign against Donald Trump at the time of the scandal
Weiner was a congressman from New York when he and Abedin first met in 2007. They wed in an elaborate ceremony in 2010 and announced their separation in 2016
Abedin and Weiner are now on good terms as they co-parent their son Jordan
Abedin shared: 'We are in the final stages of our divorce,' after they halting proceedings in several years ago
Several months later Weiner became involved in another scandal, this time involving emails found on his laptop that lead to FBI director Jim Comey reopening the investigation into Clinton.
After the news broke, Abedin was greeted at her door by ACS again when an investigator asked her if she had imagined what life would look like if Weiner was sent to prison.
The excerpt from Both/And doesn't number the meetings that Abedin had with ACS but in the end she was able to keep custody of Jordan.
After Weiner served 15 months in prison for sending obscene material to a minor, they sought therapy as they adjusted to co-parenting their son.
The couple separated in 2016 and originally filed for divorce but later withdrew that filing. When asked recently if they were getting divorced, Abedin confirmed they are.
'We are in the final stages of our divorce,' she told The Cut. 'Lawyers are doing their lawyer thing.'
Abedin said she penned the autobiography largely for her son because she wanted him to hear her side of the story.
