With economic uncertainty, inflated prices, and soaring mortgage rates, many Americans in certain U.S. cities are increasingly looking to move elsewhere, according to a study by real estate brokerage Redfin. The analysis of user data shows that expensive, coastal cities topped the list of places where residents were eager to relocate over the summer.

For San Francisco residents, Sacramento was the top choice, while those wanting to leave California entirely leaned toward Seattle. Angelenos preferred San Diego, with Las Vegas being their top out-of-state pick. Meanwhile, New Yorkers eyed Philadelphia more than any other city.

The remaining cities in the top 10 most-desired places to leave had similar trends in terms of destination choices. The cities, ranked in order, were Washington D.C. (Salisbury, Md.), Boston (Portland, Maine), Chicago (Los Angeles), Detroit (Cleveland), Seattle (Los Angeles), Minneapolis (Chicago), and Denver (Chicago). 

Redfin noted that the number of buyers looking to move has reached its highest level since the company began tracking migration data. However, the broader housing market has cooled down compared to the frenzied levels seen during the pandemic.

'Some homeowners are unwilling to trade up or trade down after locking in historically-low mortgage rates in recent years, increasing the need for more new-home construction to boost supply,' Yun said. 'The rising mortgage rate has clearly hampered the housing market.'

When looking at the cities most sought after by home buyers in July and August, rising mortgage rates and economic concerns appeared to play a significant role. Eight of the 10 most popular cities had median sales prices below $500,000. Additionally, six of the 10 are in states with no income tax.
