Top Mets News

  • Mets' Pete Alonso: Surging to begin August

Alonso went 4-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in Monday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to Cleveland.

Following a dreadful July that saw him post a .548 OPS over 85 at-bats, Alonso is quickly embarking on an early power surge to open August. The All-Star first baseman has three long balls in four outings so far this month, and Monday marked his seventh game of the year with at least four RBI. The four hits also established a new season high for Alonso.

  • Mets' Sean Manaea: Falls apart in sixth inning

Manaea didn't factor into the decision Monday against Cleveland, allowing five runs on seven hits and no walks in 5.2 innings. He struck out three.

Manaea was cruising along through five shutout frames but came apart in the sixth inning, when Cleveland brought in five runs. The veteran southpaw set a season high in both runs and hits allowed, though it was at least somewhat encouraging to see him pitch a season high 5.2 innings in his fifth start of the year. Manaea's season ERA soared from 2.08 to 3.52 on Monday, and he now holds a 0.96 WHIP and 25:4 K:BB over 23 innings. His next outing is slated for this weekend against the Brewers, who boast a .799 OPS versus left-handed pitching since the start of July.

  • Mets' Paul Blackburn: Making another rehab start

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that Blackburn (shoulder) will make another rehab start Friday, Joe Pantorno of amNewYork reports.

Blackburn looks ready, having collected a 2.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB in 20.1 innings over four rehab starts. However, the Mets aren't ready to remove Frankie Montas from the rotation at this point, so they'll kick the can down the road and have Blackburn make another rehab start. Blackburn has been out since early July with a right shoulder impingement.

  • Mets' Frankie Montas: Could be used behind opener

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Monday that the team is considering using an opener ahead of Montas is Saturday's game versus the Brewers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Montas' issues aren't exclusive to the first inning, but he does have a 6.43 ERA and opponents have slashed .333/.379/.667 against him in the opening frame this season. The Mets will mull using the right-hander in a bulk relief role this weekend as they seek to get him on track. Montas has posted a 6.68 ERA and 29:10 K:BB over 33.2 innings covering seven starts this season.

  • Mets' Brett Baty: Could lose work versus righties

Baty is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Guardians.

For the first time since the All-Star break, the left-handed-hitting Baty will hit the bench while the Mets face a right-handed starter (Slade Cecconi). Absences from the lineup against righties could begin to become the norm for Baty, who will face more competition for reps in the infield with Thursday's acquisition of center fielder Cedric Mullins expected to result in Jeff McNeil seeing the majority of his playing time at second base moving forward. With both McNeil (.774 OPS versus righties) and Ronny Mauricio (.886 OPS) outproducing Baty (.729 OPS) in those matchups this season, Baty no longer looks like the top choice to pick up starts at either the keystone or third base.

  • Mets' Austin Warren: Sent down to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Warren to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

After starter Frankie Montas was tagged for seven earned runs in four innings in Sunday's 12-4 loss to the Giants, Warren stepped in admirably to save the New York bullpen from overuse. He struck out five over four shutout frames in relief, but because he was unlikely to be available for at least a couple of days following the 58-pitch appearance, he'll be swapped out in favor of a fresh arm. Right-hander Dom Hamel was called up from Syracuse to replace Warren in the bullpen.

  • Mets' Dom Hamel: Receives call to big leagues

The Mets selected Hamel's contract from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday.

The right-hander will head to the big leagues for the first time, slotting into the Mets bullpen as a replacement for righty Austin Warren, who was optioned to Syracuse. Over 22 appearances (eight starts) at the Triple-A level this season, Hamel has produced a 4.73 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 59:15 K:BB in 53.1 frames. He'll likely function as a long reliever for the Mets and is unlikely to see much use in higher-leverage spots while he's up with the big club.

  • Mets' Francisco Lindor: Pops 21st homer

Lindor went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Sunday's loss to the Giants.

The shortstop gave the Mets an early lead by launching his 21st homer of the year off Carson Whisenhunt in the first inning, but things unraveled quickly for New York after that in a 12-4 rout. Lindor has found a groove at the plate again, slashing .310/.370/.524 over the last 10 games with three doubles, two homers, one steal, seven runs and nine RBI.

  • Mets' Frankie Montas: Shelled in loss

Montas dropped to 3-2 on the season in Sunday's 12-4 loss to the Giants, coughing up seven earned runs on seven hits and two walks over four innings while striking out three batters.

The right-hander unraveled in his last two frames, conceding five or more runs for the third time in his seven starts this season. Montas allowed a three-run blast to Rafael Devers in a four-run third inning and was then chased from the game following a three-run, four-hit fourth inning. Across 33.2 total innings, Montas now sports a 6.68 ERA, 1.54 WHIP and 29:10 K:BB while giving up seven long balls. The 32-year-old tentatively lines up to face the Brewers on the road next weekend for his eighth start of the season, though given his poor numbers on the season, it wouldn't be a major shock if the Mets elected to at least temporarily remove Montas from the rotation.

  • Mets' Paul Blackburn: Completes fourth rehab start

Blackburn (shoulder) struck out three and allowed two earned runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings Saturday in his rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse.

Blackburn has now compiled a 2.21 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB in 20.1 innings over four rehab starts between stops with Syracuse and the rookie-level Florida Complex League. He's been on the shelf since July 3 due to a right shoulder impingement but has been fully stretched out for over a week now, as he built up to 87 pitches in his previous rehab start before tossing 93 on Saturday. His delayed activation from the 15-day injured list seems to be a result of the Mets buying some time to decide whether he'll be part of the rotation or bullpen upon his return, and Blackburn's odds of returning as a starter may have increased after Sunday's 12-4 loss to the Giants. Frankie Montas was battered for seven earned runs in four innings in the loss and now holds a 6.68 ERA over seven starts on the season, perhaps putting him at risk of losing his spot in the rotation.

  • Mets' Tylor Megill: Faces hitters

Megill (elbow) threw about 22 pitches in a live batting practice session Sunday at Citi Field, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports.

Megill has now reached another major milestone in his recovery from a right elbow sprain by facing hitters for the first time since landing on the injured list June 17. The right-hander will likely throw another two-inning simulated live BP on Thursday and perhaps another sim game after that before the Mets map out a minor-league rehab assignment for him. The Mets will presumably let Megill get stretched out for a starting role during his assignment, but it's unclear if the big club will actually have a spot available for him in the rotation by the time he's eligible for activation in the middle of August.

  • Mets' Brett Baty: Taking seat Sunday

Baty is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.

Baty will head to the bench for the second time in the series, with both of his absences coming against left-handed starters. He could be at risk of losing out on starts versus right-handers, too, as Jeff McNeil will see more time in the infield after the Mets acquired center fielder Cedric Mullins from the Orioles on Thursday, giving Ronny Mauricio one fewer path to playing time. Baty, Mauricio and Mark Vientos will battle for starts at third base, but Mauricio's .886 OPS this season against righties is well ahead of Baty's .729 OPS in that split.

  • Mets' Ronny Mauricio: On bench for series finale

Mauricio is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants.

Mauricio will head to the bench while Mark Vientos starts at third base Sunday. The acquisition of Cedric Mullins at the trade deadline will limit Jeff McNeil to primarily second base, and in turn, Mauricio could be part of a committee at the hot corner with Vientos and Brett Baty.

  • Mets' Rico Garcia: Booted off 40-man roster

The Mets designated Garcia for assignment Sunday.

The right-hander was claimed off waivers by the Mets on July 21, and he pitched well in six appearances with three runs allowed and a 13:3 K:BB over eight innings. Garcia surrendered two earned runs Saturday versus the Giants, however, and has now lost his place on the 26-man active roster and 40-man roster. Austin Warren was called up from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move.

  • Mets' Austin Warren: Back in big leagues

The Mets recalled Warren from Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.

Warren has had a few brief stints in the majors this season and has given up one earned run with a 4:3 K:BB over 5.1 innings with the Mets. He's been less effective in 24 outings with Syracuse this season with a 5.20 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.

  • Mets' Brandon Nimmo: Knocks in three runs in victory

Nimmo went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI against the Giants in a 12-6 win Saturday.

Nimmo knocked an RBI single in each of the fourth, sixth and seventh frames. The veteran outfielder's productive performance came on the heels of a six-game stretch during which he recorded just one RBI while going 3-for-26 with 10 strikeouts. Nimmo has posted a .261/.327/.454 slash line with 19 homers, 56 runs, 63 RBI and 12 stolen bases through 107 contests on the campaign.
