Know Your Carbon Footprint

The British Plastics Federation designed a Carbon Footprint Tool to help the UK plastics industry measure their corporate emission footprint following GHG Protocol Guidance, including direct emissions from fuel, and processes.

The tool was created as a result of energy and carbon reporting becoming a requirement as businesses look to align with the UK Government’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 2050.  A carbon footprint measure is often seen as the first stage in reducing a company’s carbon impact, and that's where our tool comes in... “You can’t improve what you don’t measure”.

After inputting your data you will be able to set a point from which improvements can be made and view/download your reports.

How To Get Started

The tool is currently only available to BPF members and participants of the Plastic sector Climate Change Agreement schemes, who are provided with access FREE of charge. If you're a member, register for access here.  If you're not, enquire about joining here.

You can view tutorial videos for a guide to how the tool will produce your organisations footprint once you are logged into the tool via the top right, there are also a few examples below

CCA participants have the option to transfer the energy data already submitted as part of the CCA reporting requirements, this is via the CCA Reporting Website where a new Carbon Footprint tab that will take you through the registration process.

Carbon Footprint Tool FAQ's

  • Why bother producing a carbon footprint? A carbon footprint measure is often seen as the first stage in reducing a company’s carbon impact under the measure, reduce, offset framework. Energy and carbon reporting is likely becoming a requirement for your company (to align with the UK Government’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions by 100% (relative to 1990 levels) by 2050) and so this is a great place to start.

  • How long does the process of finding out my company’s footprint take? Data gathering can be time consuming initially, but after the first year assessment once the process is understood and regular records are kept this can become easy to maintain. Our tool allows for monthly, quarterly, or annual data submissions to allow for a variety of data submissions (e.g. monthly energy invoices to quarterly business mileage expense claims).

  • I know nothing about carbon footprint, is the tool easy for beginners? A carbon footprint is the measure of the CO2 emissions associated with the processes, products and activities at a site, an organisation or from the production of a specific product. There are 18 tutorial videos to help explain how to use our tool and where to include the direct and indirect emissions associated with your activities.

  • How will my company benefit from using this tool? “You can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Our carbon footprint tool allows you to start measuring the amount of carbon dioxide emissions associated with your activities, and can set a point from which improvements can be made.

  • If I get confused, is there anyone who can help? Yes of course! Please email [email protected] with any problems or queries.

  • Can I use the tool if i’m not a BPF member or participants of the Plastic sector Climate Change Agreement scheme? Unfortunately not at the moment - our tool is currently only available to BPF members and participants of the Plastic sector CCA schemes. Enquire about joining here.
