Our visit was in February, which is off-season, but the area was still experiencing traffic congestion. We have been to Charleston before and already did the downtown historic district and boat tour to Fort Sumter. Both are highly recommended sights, but this time we wanted something different. We stayed overnight about 30 minutes away at Middleton Place Inn on the Middleton Place Plantation, and enjoyed a quiet retreat and delicious hot breakfast buffet included. They had a lighted garden nighttime event we attended that was spectacular! We received free admission to the gardens the next day as Inn guests and were able to tour during the daytime as well. We next drove into Charleston for lunch at Leon's Oyster Shack (try the amazing, chargrilled oysters!). After spending the night in Mt. Pleasant, we decided on a whim to drive to Monck's corners to visit Cypress Gardens. This property was originally part of the Dean Hall Plantation and is now a nature preserve with walking trails around a pristine SC swamp. It was very beautiful, and interesting and you could even take boats out in the water on a self-guided swamp tour!

What a great place to visit to get away from the winter weather in the north! The architecture is beautiful and the history is amazing. We learned so much about the horrors of slavery and the civil war while visiting. 3 nights was not enough to see the museums. We could have spent a week in this city. Lovely place with old world charm.

Interesting city, great food lots of history. Was a bit cold for those of us who live way south of here! But all things considered great place. The architecture is breathtaking and ever so beautiful. Would like to return during the holiday season.

The old section of Charleston is a really gem.

The old section of Charleston is a really gem. Block after block of well maintain historic building. Probably one of the best preserved historic districts in the country and well worth a morning or afternoon of exploring. Other than that we didn't find Charleston a particular attractive or interesting city.

Been to Charleston many times before.

Been to Charleston many times before. The divisive nature of the prominent rich compared to the oppression of slaves, presented at the 2 places we went, are being shown differently than when we first started going to Charleston in 2018. More emphasis was placed on the suffering and challenges of the slaves at the Aiken-Rhett House, but, the Nathaiel Russell House construction of those stairs was amazing. Considering the amount of slaves they had, surely the work fell on them, more emphasis on the granduer of the house there than the burden on the slaves. On a side note, the PARKING SITUATION was awful. The meter was not working properly, kept us totally frustrated. Worried the whole time about being getting fined. Then, when at the Aiken-Rhett House Museum, we had one hour before being ticketed, the tour took more than an hour, so, again worried, we rushed thru that. More emphasis or highlights on locations of parking garages should be a part of visiting Charleston.
