FAQs about hotels in Osaka

A Stronghold of Japanese Culture

At the meeting point of river and sea, huge Osaka combines forward-thinking development and sure-footed tradition. This is symbolised in its temple-like, 16th century castle, guarded by ramparts and enlivened by vibrant spring cherry blossom. Dominating the surrounding skyline is Osaka Business Park, a reminder of the city’s strong role in the Japanese economy.

However, the most striking skyscraper is the Umeda Sky Building - 2 towers connected by a rooftop terrace offering far-reaching views. The nearby Osaka and Umeda train stations are linked by underground shopping centres, while the shops of Shinsaibashi’s America Village appeal to a younger crowd. Dōtonbori’s neon lights promote more shops, as well as restaurants considered the best in Osaka. In a city touted as Japan’s culinary capital, that’s quite an accolade.

The Tsūtenkaku tower overlooks Tennōji Park, home of the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art. Another nearby park houses Shitennō-ji, one of Japan’s oldest Buddhist temples.

The Kyocera Dome Osaka is a shrine of baseball, and more thrills are at waterfront Universal Studios Japan, the country’s 2nd largest theme park. Also by the sea is Kansai International Airport, on its own artificial island.

The capsule hotel was invented in Osaka, and alongside this type of accommodation, Booking.com also offers luxury hotels with pools, cheap hostels and traditional ryokans.

I first came here in 1986 and have travelled to and lived here for a number of years since. It was a beautiful city, hardly a tourist or foreigner in sight and the locals would go out of there way to help you if needed. The main attreactions are all still here, but at any time of the day or night it is a fight to move through the throngs of tourists. The shops are now oriented to tourism and hence are full are cheap crap and the food prices are through the roof. Even slightly out of the way places like Tennoji and Tsuruhashi are like this now. For value for money for and shopping, try and get away from the areas that are obviously touristy. Don't buy the takoyaki (octopus balls) from anywhere in the Namba area unless you see locals buying them, not that they eat them that much. Don't be on of those tourists who eat, drink, smoke, spit, talk too loudly on the street. There's already enough of them here now.

For our first visit to Japan, Osaka was the perfect choice of city to visit. Getting around was easy, with an efficient, clean and safe metro and train system. People were friendly and welcoming. There is a lot to see and do - from trying different foods, to soaking up the history and architecture, to Universal Studios, to shopping and experiencing Japanese culture. Universal Studios was a waste of time and money - it was crowded and not really an enjoyable experience.

Osaka feels extremely cold for the actual temperature on the dial. I think this can be attributed a cold, humid wind that blows everywhere, even underground. We were literally in an underground market and metro station and you could STILL feel that cold, wet wind blowing though. When we were there the temperature was from 5 to 10C, but it felt like -5C and that cold, wet wind would get though every tiny bit of exposed skin and freeze you to the bone. We came from Sapporo in the snow yet Osaka felt substantially colder. Our jackets that were perfect at -5C in the snow in Sapporo somehow weren't enough in Osaka. It was really unpleasent. The food in Osaka is poor quality compared to other parts of Japan and definitely meant as "tourist fare". Osaka is also full of gawking foriegners dragging 2-3 massive suitcases PER PERSON around (or those weird European mega-sized travel backpacks) and feels more like a theme park than a real city. There is garbage everywhere, especially in the center of the city, which was a surprise as most Japanese cities are quite clean. The metro system is confusing compared to Tokyo, despite Tokyo being much larger. It's labelled very poorly, and laid out in a very confusing, unintuitive way. Many metro stations that are right next to each other but don't actually connect, and require you to navigate a maze of confusing allyways (while the wet, cold wind is blowing through) and building interiors to get from one to the other. Osaka was our least favorite city in Japan and we don't really care to go there again. Japan is wonderful and we love it, but Osaka is sub-par. I was actually worried that we hasn't planned much time in Osaka, but we were so happy to get out of there when our three days was up and go back to our "home base" city to relax.

Osaka, Japan, offers an exciting blend of modernity and tradition, making it a vibrant destination for any traveler. Known for its food culture, the city is a paradise for food lovers, with must-try dishes like takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) found in bustling districts like Dotonbori. The iconic Osaka Castle provides a glimpse into the city's rich history, while the Umeda Sky Building offers stunning views of the skyline. Shopping enthusiasts will enjoy the high-energy streets of Shinsaibashi and Namba, while those seeking a more tranquil experience can relax in the beautiful Osaka Aquarium or stroll through the peaceful Sumiyoshi Taisha Shrine. With its friendly people, diverse attractions, and unbeatable culinary scene, Osaka is a dynamic and unforgettable place to visit.

We liked the location of the hotel. There is also a supermarket in the basement that helped us buy food for our 1-year-old child and a station that connects to Osaka-Namba station which is very convenient. We also got a city view that is amazing at night. The rooms are spacious compared to the room sizes you see in Japanese hotels. It's also near Dotonbori. It is quiet at night, which is a plus plus point since we didn't have any difficulty putting our child to sleep.

The location was fantastic, close to Dontonbori and under 10mins walk form 3 Osaka Metro Station and 15 from the Nankia Namba Station, which is directly linked to KIX International Airport. The room, whilst small compared to Australian Hotels, was perfect for what was required, a clean comfortable place to sleep. The staff were fantastic very polite and helpful from the Front Desk, to the Kitchen and the Room Service workers absolutely perfect.

Hotel Sobial Namba Daikokucho is located in central Osaka within a short metro ride from the Dotonbori nightlife area. The hotel is well-maintained and well-managed, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the Wi-Fi signal is strong. The breakfast is good with Western and Japanese options and there are laundry facilities available and an onsen available for guest use. I enjoyed my stay at Hotel Sobial and do recommend it for a short stay.
