The ASM Materials Camp®-Teachers / Advanced is for educators who have already attended an ASM Materials Camp®. The primary goal of this program is to help teachers and implement a successful Materials Science course. Priority will be given to teachers that will be teaching a Materials Science course in their district for the first time – they already have approval for a new course or are stepping into an established course. Others will be accepted as room allows with consideration given to how much of the Teachers Camp curriculum they have incorporated into the classes they currently teach.
Traditionally, the major topics and themes will be the same: metals (corrosion), ceramics/glass, polymers and composites. Also included are new labs, demonstrations and content within those categories, along with a review of the ASM Materials Camp®-Teachers content.
Objectives
- Review and deepen understanding of ASM Materials Camp®-Teachers content.
- Troubleshoot labs and demos that teachers have tried but weren’t fully successful.
- Allow teachers to practice labs and demos in a supportive environment to improve understanding and gain confidence to demonstrate successfully in the classroom setting.
- Participants share classroom experiences of incorporating the Teachers Camp curriculum into their classrooms – successes, modifications, extensions, difficulties, lessons learned, etc.
- Perform new demonstrations and labs that enhance Teachers Camp content and introduce new content.
- Receive assistance in establishing a Materials Science course (or similar): sources for equipment and supplies, curriculum, videos, etc.
- Provide an opportunity for teachers to network and work collaboratively on developing their new Materials Science course.
- Help with assessments, reading/writing assignments, NGSS correlations, internet resources, lab management, etc.
- Connect camp content with practical applications and real-world examples.
