The regular customer (Rumi) begins the introduction, in which she describes who the people are and how they are connected. Rumi uses the polite expression hontd osewa ni nat- ferun desu (“I am really grateful for their help”), which demonstrates the tachiba (“place’, “status”) of all parties in relation to each other (Haugh & Obana, 2011). Then Hisamatsu introduces himself, using the honorific form of the copula, de gozaimasu. He also uses the honorific phrase, ojama sasete itadakimashita (“thank you for having us”). Throughout these interactions, positive non-verbal behaviours (Allen, 2019) are also performed (e.g. smiling and bowing). These expressions form part of routine-like aisatsu or greetings. Specifically, they are ‘verbal formulae and nonverbal rituals that mark demeanour among the inter- actants” (Ide, 1998, p. 526). Furthermore,
