Figure 48 Two layers of silty material with a high content of fired clay (5632 and 5633) were identified to the immediate north and north-east of kiln 5330 and seemed to result from the demolition or collapse of the superstructure. Finds recovered from these deposits included sherds of calcite-gritted ware jars and Crambeck ware indicating a date in the late 4th century AD. A small pit (5590) was also encountered to the immediate north of the kiln which contained 35 sherds of a narrow necked jar of a type most common during the 2nd and 3rd century AD (Plate 20). It appeared that the jar had been intentionally placed within the pit and may have been a quenching pot. Figure 48: Kiln 5330, Phase 3c at Healam North
