The editorial work of George Kechagioglou at the INS/Manolis Triantafyllides Foundation includes a two-volume [Early Modern Greek] Prose Anthology (2001), a three-volume edition of all early Modern Greek versions of Apollonius of Tyre (2004) and the series "Older Texts of Modern Greek Literature" (with Kechagioglou as General Editor) which has produced 16 titles between 2010-2024 – the most recent being the Book of Sindbad the Philosopher (Μυθολογικόν Σιντίπα) edited by Kechagioglou himself). In 2021, the publication of Georgios Lapatis (Stathas) Erotic Story inaugurated the new series “Texts of Modern Greek Literature” (with Kechagioglou serving again as General Editor), and was followed, in 2022, by the publication of Konstantinos Rossetis’ Elegant Story or Eumenia and Sapphiades – both volumes were produced with Kechagioglou’s editorial care. In this paper, I focus on the latter two prose works, which almost double the “amorous fiction” of the Modern Greek Enlightenment and highlight various interesting aspects of the Phanariote society. Taking into account the declared editorial choices of both the series and the editor himself, the paper emphasizes on the way in which Kechagioglou works in the introductions to his editions: the constant generic, genealogical, historical and other reframing he provides – which not only examines the Greek (modern and otherwise) paradigm, but also opens up to both Western and Eastern literary traditions – is extensively presented and critically discussed. Kechagioglou’s editions of modern Greek literary works are proved to provide both scholarly reliable and easy-to-use texts, accompanied by rich introductions which allow best understanding of each text’s generic attributions and, ultimately, a fair historical and literary assessment, while at the same time allowing ample space for further research investigations to fill in the gaps created by the many interesting research questions he raises. In this sense, the paper concludes with a new proposal concerning the author of the Elegant Story (which draws on Machiavelli's Favola), Konstantinos Rossetis, and suggests that he, most probably, is the same person as the later famous Romanian revolutionary, liberal politician, publisher-printer-bookseller, journalist, literary figure, translator and important theatrical figure and actor Constantin Alexandru Rosetti (1816-1885), who composed the text in Greek as a 16-year-old student, possibly with the encouragement (?) and/or the help (?) of his teacher at the St. Savvas College in Bucharest Costache Aristia (1800-1880) during the school year 1832-33.

Στη μελέτη αναλύεται η δομή των Λόγων διδακτικών του Μάρκου Δεφαράνα και καταρρίπτεται η παγιωμένη από το 1977  θέση ότι το στιχούργημα αποτελεί μία απλή αμέθοδη οικειοποίηση του ομόθεμου έργου του Μαρίνου Φαλιέρου. Σχολιάζονται οι καινοτομίες του ζακυνθινού ποιητή και τίθενται τα νέα ερωτήματα και ζητήματα, που πρέπει να απασχολήσουν τη σύγχρονη έρευνα σχετικά με το ποίημα. Ανακοινώνεται επίσης η κριτική έκδοσή του.

This contribution outlines the academic and scientific career of Mario Vitti (1926-2023) through his main works and the most salient stages of his professional life. After a brief review of Modern Greek studies before Vitti's arrival in Italy (1946), several works that made an essential contribution to the development of the discipline are examined in the light of the research and publications produced by Vitti himself. Of particular importance is the collection of books that belonged to M. Vitti, acquired by Ca' Foscari University in 2007, thanks also to a grant from the Ministry of Culture of Greece and the Ministry of Culture of Cyprus, which is housed in the Library of the Humanities Area (BAUM), available to the student community and to all interested parties. In Bodleian Library’s D’ Orville Collection, two manuscripts are directly linked to N. Mavrokordatos’ inner circle. The Ms D’ Orville 5 preserves, among other works, the renowned cata-logue of Demetrios Prokopiou, Επιτετμημένη επαρίθμησις των κατά τον παρελθόντα αιώνα λογίων Γραικών, while the Ms D’ Orville 118 is a well preserved leather notebook that delivers in whole Mavrokordatos’ novel Φιλοθέου Πάρεργα. Both manuscripts are dated in the beginning of the 18th century and have not been yet discussed by researchers. With this paper I wish to present and elaborate on these manuscripts and trace the connec-tions between N. Mavrokordatos’ inner circle and a network of Oxford theologians and scholars in the years 1700-1722. How did these works end up in the Bodleian Library and what stories can they tell us?

This is an essay in interpretation of a very popular early Modern Greek fable poem, Γαδάρου, Λύκου και Αλουπούς διήγησις ωραία, first printed in 1539. It is tentatively suggested that a key moment in this brilliant satire, where Donkey is apparently condemned for a gastronomical "sin", may actually allude indirectly to a major religious controversy of the time.

Les oeuvres de la littérature orale/folklorique sont, en raison de leur oralité, en perpétuelle évolution et changement. Transférés dans une langue écrite, les « textes » oraux sont à nouveau alimentés par de nouvelles idées et de nouveaux médias et continuent ainsi à changer. Les contes de fées et les légendes s'adaptent aux nouvelles formes pour de nombreuses raisons, telles que: a) leur audience d'origine se modifie, par ex. les contes de fées qui s'adressaient à un public adulte à nos jours s'adressent aux enfants et par conséquent les manières stylistiques se modifient, b) le cadre idéologiquece que John Stephens et Robyn McCallum appellent metaethic-change, ainsi que de nouvelles idées entrent pour remodeler l'intrigue, les personnages, la personne du narrateur, etc. et c) les nouveaux médias et la technologie créent différentes formes de l'écriture littéraire. Dans le présent article, nous allons examiner les métamorphoses d'une légende médiévale bien connue, celle de Basile Digenis Acritas, en explorant comment elle se présente dans trois livres modernes pour enfants, les deux livres illustrés, écrits par les Kalokyris et par Poulos, et un roman fantastique historique de Hatzopoulos.

Σοφία Γιαπαντζαλή Η αναπαράσταση του έρωτα μέσω της ιατρικής ορολογίας στον Καλλίμαχο ΔΥΤΙΚΗ ΕΡΩΤΙΚΗ ποίηση πραγματεύεται πολύ συχνά τον ανεκπλήρωτo έρωτα. Τα συναισθήματα που απεικονίζονται συνήθως από τους ποιητές είναι η επιθυμία, η απόγνωση, η απογοήτευση, η ζήλια και η προδοσία, ενώ σπανίως η ικανοποίηση. Ο έρωτας, δύναμη κοσμογονική-σύμφωνα με τις ησιόδειες αναφορέςσχετίζεται στην αρχαία ελληνική λογοτεχνία με μία πληθώρα παραστάσεων, φανερώνοντας και τις εκάστοτε πεποιθήσεις της εποχής περί έρωτος. Με τη στροφή προς τον ορθολογισμό, τον 5 ο αι. π.Χ. και την εγκαινίαση της νέας ιατρικής προσέγγισης της Ιπποκρατικής Σχολής του 4 ου αι. π.Χ., στη διάρκεια αυτού του «πρώτου Διαφωτισμού» (Lesky, 2014: 440), η περιγραφή του έρωτα μεταβάλλεται υπό το συγκείμενο της ιατρικής ορολογίας και της συμπτωματολογίας. Ο «λυσιμελής έρως» συναντάται στην ελληνιστική περίοδο εντός νέων αισθητικών αρχών και ενός καινοφανούς πολιτικού και κοινωνικού πλαισίου. Η παρούσα προσέγγιση προτίθεται να παρουσιάσει αυτές τις γλωσσικές απεικονίσεις της ερωτικής δύναμης μέσω της ιατρικής ορολογίας στον Καλλίμαχο, με αφορμή την αφήγηση της ιστορίας του Ακόντιου και της Κυδίππης στα Αἴτια (αππ. 67-75 Pf.), επιχειρώντας να προβάλλει νέες προοπτικές ερμηνείας υπό το πρίσμα των έμφυλων ταυτοτήτων. A distanza di 50 anni, nell'àmbito del progetto "Palermo laboratorio del dialogo tra le culture", il gruppo di allora giovani studiosi che ebbero la fortuna di conoscerlo e collaborare con lui, hanno voluto off rire alla "città dell'accoglienza" questo ricordo collettivo di un grande personaggio, e la ricostruzione di una esemplare vicenda di collaborazione internazionale e di solidarietà intellettuale e politica svoltasi a Palermo in anni diffi cili per la Grecia. Salvatore Nicosia è professore emerito dell'Università di Palermo, dove ha insegnato per oltre 40 anni Lingua e letteratura greca. Initial scholarly research on early Modern Greek drama was largely philological, but also entertained the possibility that these plays had a stage history. Evidence of a stage history for early modern Greek drama came to light in recent years indicating that there was more activity than anyone previously suspected. Evidence for theater performances in early modern Greece is now quite abundant and so are the indirect clues in the texts of the extant plays. The issue of whether each specific extant play was intended for performance or was actually performed has to be addressed for each play separately. That task is beyond the scope of the present essay in which I provide a structured synthesis of much new research that has been reported mainly in Greek over the past 25 years. I also survey all of the extant plays of early modern Greek drama in order to make a case for their performability and stage history.

The paper aims to explore the area of Epistemic Modality in Modern Greek, by means of a corpus-based research. A comparative, quantitative study was performed between written corpora of non-native informants of various language backgrounds and Greek native speakers (the control group). A number of epistemic markers were investigated on the grounds of their high frequency, to detect the ways these are used in the expression of L2 speaker stance, as compared to the respective NS one. 1 Although the study concerns written corpora, the terms 'speaker-hearer' are used in a broader sense to include those of 'writer-addressee'. Also, the speaker bears the female identity throughout the paper.

This paper discusses Ilias Venezis's short story "The State of Virginia" with special emphasis on the themes of migration and old age. Published in 1954, in the aftermath of WWII and the Greek Civil War, "The State of Virginia" captures the drama of an elderly woman victim of the Asia Minor Catastrophe, as she is migrating to Virginia, U.S.A. after thirty years of temporary residence in a refugee village in rural Attica. My analysis focuses on the protagonist's reluctant migration as it emerges from the farewell scene between her and her lifelong friend; their conversation on the irreversibility of their separation, the challenges facing elderly migrants, and the significance of native soil voices an insightful discourse on belonging and rootedness that transcends many socio-temporal limits.

HE PRESENT STUDY proposes to examine the nature of Digenes as a hero in Digenes Akrites. 1 For that purpose I seek to analyze the poem allegorically in order to identify and better understand the value-system of the work and to clarify the function of the poem in its historical context. The poem consists of two parts, the Lay of the Emir and the Digeneid. Some geographical and historical elements are revealed in both parts that allow us to identify events reflected in the poem. The evidence of the Digenes epos shows that the historical background is the period of Byzantine-Arab peace in the tenth century that was established after the Byzantines reached Syria and the eastern borders of the empire had advanced to the Euphrates. In the Digeneid the action is centered well to the east in Commagene, beside the Euphrates in the neighborhood of Samosata. Όταν είσαι χορτάτος από το σπίτι σου, είσαι ήρεμος αλλά όχι
εφησυχασμένος. Δεν είσαι – δεν έχεις λόγους να είσαι – αρχομανής, ούτε
νοσηρά ανταγωνιστικός. Ενδεχομένως μπορείς να είσαι ήπια φιλόδοξος,
ακόμη ίσως και υγιώς συναγωνιστικός. Δεν είναι το χρήμα, πάντα και μόνο, ο
καταλύτης. Άλλωστε ποτέ δεν ήταν άφθονο. Γιατί είναι τελείως διαφορετικό
το «είμαι πλούσιος» από το «πεινάω» αλλά και από το «είμαι στοιχειωδώς
αυτάρκης» (η περίπτωσή μας). Ας πούμε, με όρους μαρξιστικούς, ότι η βάση
έχει σχετική στερεότητα και κατά συνέπεια δόθηκε η αναγκαία σημασία στην
ανάπτυξη του εποικοδομήματος. Φυσικά αισθάνεσαι ευγνωμοσύνη για τις
ευκαιρίες που σου προσφέρθηκαν.

Πράγματι διαθέτεις εξαρχής το συγκριτικό πλεονέκτημα. Εκκινείς από
το σημείο εκείνο, όπου, για να οδηγηθούν πολλοί συνομήλικοί σου επί
παραδείγματι, αναγκάστηκαν να διανύσουν κάποια απόσταση. Όμως εδώ,
στη δική μας κοινωνική διαστρωμάτωση, δε μιλάμε για ταξικότητα τόσο
πεπλατυσμένη και αναπόδραστη. Όχι πως δεν υφίσταται αλλά αντικειμενικά
είναι ελάσσων. Η κοινωνική κινητικότητα είναι ιδιαίτερα ευέλικτη. Άλλωστε
δε φέρεις ευθύνη εσύ για τον κάπως πρωιμότερο εξαστισμό της πατρικής σου
οικογένειας. Ας μην λησμονούμε, όπως έγραφε κάποτε και ο Βασίλης Φίλιας,
ότι μπορεί εξαρχής να ήταν νόθα αυτή η αστικοποίηση, το τελικό προϊόν ενός
ιστορικού καταναγκασμού, που η εσωτερική μετανάστευση επέβαλε4.
Προφανώς δε θα απολογηθείς για το αστικό σου background. Αντιθέτως,
είσαι περήφανος και – για να βάλουμε τα πράγματα στη θέση τους –
αισθάνεσαι βασική αυτοπεποίθηση για τις συγκεκριμένες καταβολές. Πολύ
περισσότερο δεν επιτρέπεις να σου τις αμφισβητούν! Ιδίως, όταν υφίσταται
ως ψόγος, λες και φέρεις ευθύνη ή είσαι... ένοχος – ή όταν η κακόπιστη
κριτική μεταλλάσσεται από τους εκάστοτε τιμητές σε ηθικολόγο διδακτισμό!

Although ancient Greek has been a major subject at the University of Lund since its foundation, the teaching of Modern Greek began in 1957, under the influence of the increasing interest in Modern Greek literature and the needs of Swedish archaeologists working in Greece. The Department of Modern Greek Studies at the University of Lund, now independent from the Department of Ancient Greek, has constituted one of the 35 Departments of the Centre for Languages and Literature since 2006 and it provides teaching, at both undergraduate and post-graduate level, research and translation of Greek authors. Even though funding from the Swedish government guarantees the existence of Modern Greek studies at the University of Lund, the support from the Greek State and Greek Institutions is considered essential for the future of Departments of Modern Greek Studies in European Universities in general.

Στην εργασία αυτή εισαγόμαστε στην έννοια της ποιητικής. Στόχος μας είναι να αναλύσουμε τους τρόπους με τους οποίους λειτουργεί καθώς και τα μεθοδολογικά της εργαλεία. Δεδομένου ότι το κεφάλαιο αυτό είναι το τελευταίο στο εγχειρίδιο των Pierre Brunel, Claude Pichois, André – Michel Rousseau Τι είναι η Συγκριτική Γραμματολογία;, στο τέλος της εργασίας θα προσπαθήσουμε να οδηγηθούμε σε έναν
ορισμό της Συγκριτικής Γραμματολογίας.

Editions of literary and non-literary texts: some comparisons The corpus of texts on which our grammar will be based consists primarily of printed editions produced from the 19th century onwards, mainly because it would take far too long to transcribe all the texts that interest us from the manuscripts that preserve them. It would not be a responsible use of the limited resources of the project. Two conclusions follow from this: 1) We need to have a very clear understanding of the principles which editors have followed, in each case, so that we are not misled into treating normalisation or other instances of editorial intervention as if they were primary evidence. 2) We are, to some extent at least, at the mercy of the editors who stand between us and the manuscripts, although we shall occasionally consult the actual manuscripts (or microfilms, digitised images or photocopies) in order to check dubious readings. As we have made clear, our project has a particular interest in utilising the evidence of non-literary texts, which have never been systematically exploited as a source of linguistic evidence by scholars working on the history of the language. The main aim of this conference is to bring together scholars who work with non-literary materials written in the medieval vernacular, in order to get a better understanding of the kinds of material that exist, their availability in published form, and the ways in which experts in various disciplines use documents and other forms of written evidence for the purposes of their own research. The idea behind this slot in the programme was to invite a scholar who has hands-on experience of editing both literary and non-literary texts to discuss the editorial practices involved in both cases, to explain the different kinds of difficulties which the editor faces, and to indicate how they can be overcome. We thought it would be particularly interesting to examine texts with a known dialectal background. The phrase "known dialectal background", however, is a rather imprecise way of referring to the sorts of texts we have in mind. You might object that, in the period that concerns us, every speaker/writer's vernacular was in some sense a dialect, in the absence of a widely accepted standard language. That may be true, but the fact is that it is often impossible to assign texts to a particular "dialect", for a multitude of reasons. One possible reason is that authors themselves deliberately avoided dialectisms that might not be understood outside their own region. "Toning down" of dialect features may also be due to the process of transmission, as scribes consciously (or unconsciously) adapted the language of a text to suit the needs of their intended audience. In addition, we need to recognise the existence of some kind of supradialectal koine, or possibly two kinds: one used for oral communication when speakers from different parts of the Greek-speaking world came into contact, and one used in written texts. The latter might involve some recourse to more learned linguistic features, in phonology and morphology as well as syntax, while still being recognisable as a form of the vernacular, rather than the formal learned style of, for example, Byzantine scholars or ecclesiastics. A third form of koine that has been proposed, with particular respect to literature, has been termed either a Kunstsprache 1 or (by Hans Eideneier) "Koine der Dichtersänger", 2 both of which can be seen as attempts to account for the mix of linguistic forms found in late medieval literary texts. While the second kind of koine can be identified in prose texts of various kinds, the third stresses the oral/formulaic characteristics of verse texts. In all these cases-it might be argued-a supra-dialectal linguistic form obscures the existence of the real vernacular, in its various dialectal or regional forms. One consequence of this situation is that, in the absence of external evidence, it is impossible to localise a large proportion of literary texts written from, let's say, the 13th to the 15th centuries. Reputable scholars have proposed, for the same romance text, an origin in Crete, Asia Minor, or even Southern Italy. Or, in the case of one of the laments for Constantinople (Aνακάλημα της Κωνσταντινόπολης), scholars are divided between Cyprus and Crete, or perhaps one of the islands in the Eastern Aegean. The first text which is conventionally described as written in a dialect is the Assizes of Cyprus, dating from the 13th century. More importantly, we have the Cypriot chronicles of Machairas and Boustronios, dated to the 15th century. In Crete poetry exhibiting what Peter Mackridge has called "tinges of local dialect" 3 is extant from the last decades of the 14th century, though it is not until the late 16th century

Modern Greek studies as an independent research domain and academic discipline are relatively new. However, important centers of Modern Greek linguistics and philology can be found not only in Greece or in Cyprus, but in other countries as well. Russia is no exception here. The oldest department of Modern Greek studies was founded in 1984 in Saint Petersburg (Leningrad) State University. The idea of the continuity of the Greek language, partly reflected in the title of our department (the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies), is very important to us, and it has become a starting point for our educational programs and research projects. Thus, our students always start from Ancient Greek and Ancient Greek literature, and only then proceed to Modern Greek and Byzantine studies that are obligatory for all our undergraduates. This ideology together with special educational methods is a key factor that contributes to our positive results in teaching Greek as a foreign languag...

Μερικούς από τους πιο διαδεδομένους διατροφικούς μύθους στην Ελλάδα θα εξετάσουμε αμέσως παρακάτω.

When scholars are forced to speak about Medieval or Byzantine Greek it is not without a certain embarrassment. Conventionally, in various European languages (except those of contemporary Greece and Cyprus) 'Greek' means the language spoken and written since the time of the Homeric epics down to the end of antiquity around the fourth to fifth century CE, in other words, Ancient Greek.  At the same time, 'Modern Greek' signifies the language used by Greek-speaking people today and at least since the seventeenth century.  But what lies between these two forms of Greek?  A very recent and important publication presents a voluminous grammar of 'Medieval and Early Modern Greek'; however, it is not made clear what linguistic idiom the two terms encompass.  Similarly, a massive dictionary of 'Medieval Greek vernacular literature' does not offer a clear definition of this term.  The dictionary and the grammar cover roughly the period -. Users realize fairly quickly that the language studied in these two works represents the early history of Modern Greek as a language independent of Ancient Greek and called 'vernacular' in English. At the same time, another recently completed dictionary is devoted to Byzantine Greek,  wherein the learned (or archaizing) language from the eighth to the thirteenth century is analysed.  The fact that Greek during Byzantine times appears to be strictly divided into a learned and a vernacular idiom is an old construct going back to Italian and German humanists of the sixteenth century, which was eagerly picked up by Greek intellectuals of the Enlightenment, who were making an effort to create a written idiom appropriate for the new nation that should arise out of the struggle for independence from Ottoman dominion.  It is in this context that a beginning was sought for Modern Greek, and the beginning was determined by the discovery of various texts in the vernacular idiom. Some of these texts could be securely dated to the twelfth century; others could not but were nevertheless placed in that century, a constitutive period for the rise of vernacular literatures among 

Emile Legrand in his Bibliographie Hellenique was the first to publish information about 16th century vernacular Greek chapbooks ex libris Martini Crusii. Since then, the extant copies in the library of Tlibingen University have been used by many scholars for their philological work. 2 Eideneier, in the paper I have already mentioned, 3 presents a list of the extant Greek Venetian imprints of Crusius's library.
