This article describes the effects of dialogue journaling through e-mail on the language produced by two groups (experimental and control) of first-semester-Spanish college students. The independent variable was the use of electronic mail while the dependent variables were accuracy and number of words per message. Quantitative results showed that the control group significantly outperformed the experimental group regarding grammatical accuracy. Nonsignificant differences for either lexical accuracy or number of words were found. For qualitative analysis, a questionnaire administered to both groups requested their opinions on the effectiveness and attitude towards the journaling technique. The authors concluded that, although the e-mail medium promoted a more positive attitude towards the language, dialogue journals via e-mail did not improve grammar skills. Thus, suggestions are offered to modify instruction to enhance other positive results from the use of electronic writing in L2, thereby providing a way to incorporate authentic, real-life writing tasks, develop better classroom rapport, and allow advantages to students otherwise reluctant to speak in class.

The intent of the current study is to explore teacher candidates' cognitive, affective, and behavioral attitude towards the compulsory English courses at universities and the relation of attitude with the participants' genders, studying departments, graduated high schools, goals and hours for studying English. The cross-sectional survey and correlational research design, interlaced within each other, were embraced to reach that objective. 207 volunteer freshman students were sampled at the education faculty of a state university. A partially adapted survey was wielded as a data collection instrument. Based on the results of the descriptive and inferential statistics, while a large number of the respondents aimed to pass the English course, almost half of them did not ever exert any effort to learn the English language. The participants displayed negative attitude in all attitudinal components substantiating monolithic attitudinal concept. Male students displayed more favorable dispositions than females. Teacher learners getting education at the Turkish Language Education department bore more approving attitude than the other departments. The participants graduated from general high schools unexpectedly embraced more favorable dispositions. The participants' goals and hours for studying English had very little share on their attitude. Hinged upon the results, a number of suggestions were forwarded to educators to promote approving dispositions in the language learners and teacher learners.

This article examines the impact of gender, age, and education on the attitudes of Kurdish speakers in Mahabad towards standard Persian and the Kurdish language. Since people’s emotions towards their own or others’ languages are related to their language attitudes, this important component plays a significant role in measuring success in language planning, learning speed, language selection and use, and predicting the extinction or sustainability of a language. The study’s statistical population consisted of 80 Kurdish-Persian bilinguals in Mahabad who were randomly selected. This study is situated within the theoretical framework of sociocognitive linguistics, and the research perspective was measured through an indirect method (matched-guise test). After distributing the questionnaire and conducting the matched-guise test, the collected data were analyzed. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the variables of gender, age, and education in Mahabad had no significant impact on the attitudes of bilingual Kurdish speakers towards standard Persian and the Kurdish language. The Kurdish speakers of Mahabad exhibited numerically positive attitude towards the standard Persian language compared to Kurdish language, but no significant difference in terms of any of the mentioned variables was observed between the two languages under study.

The article examines the different factors and contexts which have influenced language policy in Malawi from the time of early missionaries to the present, and highlights the implications and consequences of the language policy—both politically, educationally and socially. However, given the conceptual framework of language policy and the historical, linguistic and cultural disposition of the Malawian society which emphasize education, the article has its main focus on the education system. In addition to intensive literature review and document analysis, semi-structured interviews, mainly with secondary school teachers, were conducted in Mzimba District in July 2014. The Dapeng dialect is a unique Hakka–Cantonese mixed dialect spoken by several thousand speakers in the Dapeng peninsula in Shenzhen, Guangdong, and Manhattan, New York. This study reviews language vitality assessment frameworks for their applicability to Chinese languages and assesses the sustainability of the Dapeng dialect using the UNESCO Language Vitality and Endangerment scale. Despite some factors indicating low vitality, an overall assessment suggests a sustainable and vigorous use of the local dialect in the Dapeng community. This study shows that not all minor dialects in China are severely endangered. It sheds light on the complexities of language sustainability and vitality in multilingual societies, emphasizing the importance of using appropriate evaluative frameworks for an accurate view of language vitality in specific sociolinguistic ecologies. This study also contributes to discussions about language maintenance and policy in China, particularly under the tension between Putonghua and local dialects in the context of language sustainability.

Zugehörigkeit, Heimat, Identität ̶ diese Aspekte scheinen untrennbar mit Sprache und Kultur verknüpft zu sein. Doch dass eine solche Zuordnung nicht immer so eindeutig und vor allem leicht zu treffen ist, zeigt sich am Beispiel von Südtirol. Hier treffen mit Deutsch und Italienisch zwei solchermaßen unterschiedliche Sprach-und Kulturgruppen aufeinander, dass Spannungen meist unvermeidbar waren und immer noch sind. Insbesondere die historische Entwicklung in diesem Teil Italiens, dessen Zugehörigkeit stets konfliktgeladen war, beeinflusst bis heute die Situation der heterogenen Region. Mich hat es von Anfang an gestört und es stört mich heute noch, dass man eine Sprachgruppe auswählen muss. Ich bin einfach bilingual und fühle mich zu keiner der Sprachgruppen eher zugehörig als zur anderen.

A research of language attitude is getting much attention for years in some fields. Due to the importance of the language attitude, this research intends to describe the language attitude of Sundanese towards English language in Eastern Priangan, West Java Province. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research. The data used is the data obtained through questioners, observations, and in-depth interviews to know the attitude of the Sundanese community language. Respondents which were involved in the research are respondents living in Eastern Priangan, such as Ciamis, Banjar, Tasikmalaya city, Tasikmalaya regency, Sumedang, Garut, and Pangandaran. This paper explores, at the micro level, the sociolinguistic backgrounds of teacher trainees in a College of Education in Accra and their perceptions toward Ghana's current language-ineducation policy. It aims at finding how these micro-level sociolinguistic insights could provide suggestions for language-ineducation policies at the macro level. This paper argues that the disparities between policy and practice that have occurred in language-in-education policy partly stem from the possible neglect of the multilingual realities of Ghana in the formulation and implementation of the policies. Being a multilingual country, the recognition of a need for a language (or languages) of communication, and a need to select one or more languages for official purposes are crucial in the language planning activities. The linguistic backgrounds of the teacher trainees and their repertoires illustrate the high level of bilingualism and multilingualism in the country. Although a preliminary survey, we propose a flexible bilingual language-in-education policy to address the linguistic complexities of Ghana. We suggest a bottom-up approach for soliciting inputs toward a macro-level policy.

There are two major factors which influence a person to learn and master a foreign language. These are language attitude and motivation. The aim of this study is to understand how language attitude and motivation of students in Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) South Korea affect learning the Indonesian Language. Questionnaires were distributed to 20 students of Malay-Indonesian Department at HUFS, South Korea. The data obtained from the questionnaires were then analyzed by using a scale for measuring attitude (Likert scale). Based on the Likert scale analysis, the results indicated that their language attitudes had an average value of 3.87 (the scale ranges from 1 to 5). This implies that they have a  positive attitude. This research is a study on native people's attitudes towards Acehnese language in Langsa Aceh. The research design used a qualitative research method that examines the attitudes of native speakers of the language of Aceh in Langsa in prewserving the language. The subject of research is the native speakers of Acehnese who live in the city of Langsa from eighteen years to twenty years old. This study used observation, questionnaire and interview. The data obtained from this study were analyzed based on the cooperative model intrcidued by Miles and Hubermann. The study shows that 55% of respondents indicates a very positive attitude towards in preserving the Acehnese by using the language in everyday communication. While 45% of respondents indicates a negative attitude where they seldom use Acehnese in their daily interaction and very often switch the language to Indonesian in their communication. The study also reveals that the use of Acehnese at home, the pride of using Acehnese and the Acehnese as identity are the factors that contribute to the preservation of Acehnese.

The present study explores attitudes of non-native speakers of English studying in a reputable university in Melbourne, Australia, towards world Englishes. Student journalists are trained to express and translate their outputs into paper. The preferred language medium they use to do so, however, may convey their perception and attitude towards languages. This study aimed to determine the preferred language that student journalists use in their articles, the reason for their preference, and their attitude towards English, Filipino, and their vernacular language. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were used as research design. Data were collected through distributing survey questionnaires to 58 student journalists in Mindano State Univeristy-Marawi during academic year 2013-2014 and conducting interviews to a random sample of 12 from those surveyed. El propósito de este estudio es explorar la actitud lingüística de los estudiantes masculinos y femeninos de GCUF hacia Punjabi, Urdu e Inglés. Se seleccionó una muestra de 50 estudiantes varones y mujeres y se distribuyó un cuestionario de 15 preguntas entre los estudiantes. Los resultados revelan que los estudiantes masculinos y femeninos tienen una actitud positiva hacia Punjabi en el dominio del hogar. Tienen una actitud negativa hacia el uso de Punjabi en la escuela, el mercado, los medios, los vecinos y los dominios religiosos. Según los resultados de este estudio, el punjabi y el idioma inglés están cambiando en todos los dominios, mientras que el urdu se mantiene. 

Investigating female rural students" attitudes towards learning English is a substantial need to identify EFL learners" perception of English and provide language teachers and textbook designers with research evidence. For this reason, numerous studies have been conducted to determine the correlation between learners" background and their language learning attitudes. However, very few research studies have targeted female rural students" language attitude to determine whether there is a correlation between their socioeconomic background and language attitude. Therefore, this study was conducted on a sample of 90 female rural students of two high schools located in two small Moroccan villages to identify whether they held a positive or negative attitude towards learning English and to specify the variables that shaped their attitudes. Participants were randomly selected and filled in a five likert scale questionnaire. The significant findings of the study include the participants" preference to study English rather than other foreign languages at high school; they displayed high motivation and frequent classroom participation in the English class, strong desire to improve their English communicative competence, negative attitude towards the culture used in the English textbook, and positive social value to a person who speaks English. Thus, this study concluded that there was no correlation between female rural students" socioeconomic background and their positive attitude to study English.

As a major new means of global communication, social media platforms such as Facebook have afforded linguists of today to observe the development and diffusion of a language online. This study looked into the dominant language use seen in the Facebook profiles of the Meranaw professionals and their reasons given for the use of English as a language in their posts. Further, using Netnography, a form of Internet ethnography, dominant language present in the reactions of Facebook friends to the researchers' most commented post was observed in order to identify the dominant language in support to the profile observations with the participants. Results showed two interesting findings that have emerged from this netnographic research and virtual interview. First, English is the dominant language used by the selected participants in the observation made from October to November 2015 and the comment posts made by the FB friends of the researcher during the said observation. Second, among the identified reasons for posting in English, the majority of the responses were because of English's global/universal use that allows all audiences to understand the posts made by the participants and followed by the comfortability or confidence of the participant over the use of English as a language in their posts. In addition, the researcher believed that "language is culture". The minimal use of the Meranaw language implied a minimal presence of the cultural idiosyncrasies of the Meranaws on social media platforms. Hence, when a closer and longer look at the language use is done, a clearer picture of the cultural idiosyncrasies of the Meranaws may be visible in the posts even with the use of English language. In that light, it is worthwhile to consider whether the online use of English and Meranaw by this small group of Meranaw professionals might reflect broader and more enduring social, cultural, and linguistic shifts.

This study sought to examine the implementation of MTB-MLE in schools where the majority of the students are indigenous learners. It specifically aimed to describe the (1) teachers' experiences with MTB-MLE implementation and the (2) the teachers' concerns in implementation. Purposive sampling was used; 6 Primary Teachers were interviewed using a semi-structured interview technique. Results show that the teachers believe in the program's purpose of the program, but in practice, it has some issues that call for reflection among policymakers and program implementers. The teachers see MTB-MLE as something irrelevant because it is a duplication of the Filipino subject which is not the Mother Tongue of the learners in the first place. This survey research investigated the perception of primary school teachers on the efficacy of MTB-MLE in SLU-LES, Baguio City. SLU-LES has a total of 21 primary school teachers who served as the respondents of this study in an attempt to answer three major questions regarding the efficacy of MTB-MLE among primary school teachers. A questionnaire was used in collecting the data which were analyzed using weighted mean and ANOVA. The questionnaire was validated by a statistician and it was administered to a school which does not differ from the intended respondents for further validation of the items. Findings revealed from the intended respondents that they perceive MTB-MLE as effective; however, they do not prefer the use of Mother Tongue as medium of instruction. Acquiring two languages such as English and Cebuano during migration is an interesting challenge for nine young Filipino-German migrants living in Dumaguete City, Philippines which is dubbed as one of the best places to retire in the world. Attitudes and motivation play a significant part in learning the second language with the consequence of forgetting the mother tongue due to its non-use. The respondents are divided into short -term migrants who migrated less than five years and long-term migrants who moved to Dumaguete for more than five years and beyond. In the motivation and attitude study, only the short-term migrants answered neutral for attitude towards German people and attitude towards Filipino people. Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions; (1) what is the psychological status of the students after the Marawi siege regarding anxiety and stress manifestation? (2) Is there a significant relationship between the psychological status and the academic performance in science of the MSU-UTC students brought about by the Marawi siege? The research study used quasi experimental with qualitative research design. A population of eighty-two (82) grade 10 students were used in the conduct of the study. The following results showed that (1) students have more worries now than before the Marawi siege ; (2) Students feel pressured because of the many requirements in school; (3) Performance of students in science and Psychological stress are not associated without psychosocial intervention or values integration; (4) While with psychosocial intervention student performance and stress are significantly related; (5) and lastly, students anxiety and performance in science both with and without psychosocial intervention are not significantly related.

The respondents are divided into short -term migrants who migrated less than five years and long-term migrants who moved to Dumaguete for more than five years and beyond. In the motivation and attitude study, only the short-term migrants answered neutral for attitude towards German people and attitude towards Filipino people. The present study explores attitudes of non-native speakers of English studying in a reputable university in Melbourne, Australia, towards world Englishes. In particular, the study investigates different attitudes between students enrolled in a university subject, which indirectly promotes the students' acceptance towards them and those who have not taken the subject towards world Englishes. The present study uses the direct approach, which allows informants to give an account of their attitudes (McKenzie, 2010). By adopting a questionnaire designed by Yoshikawa (2005), the present study seeks to answer two research questions: (1) Do non-native English students taking the subject have different attitudes from non-native English students who have not taken the subject towards world Englishes? (2) Do the students enrolled in Linguistic-Related majors have different attitudes from the students enrolled in Non-Linguistic-Related majors towards world Englishes? The findings of the study will contribute to the literature on world Englishes and the identification of a possible way to promote the acceptance of world Englishes. The results show that informants who are taking/have taken the subject tend to have more positive attitudes towards non-Inner Circle varieties than those who have not taken the subject. Similar results are also shown among informants grouped based on their majors in which Linguistics-Related ones are more acceptant. However, there is no significant difference regarding their attitudes toward Inner Circle English.

This quantitative investigation involved 1,054 pre-service teacher respondents with mean age =
20.21 (SD=3.124). This cross-sectional study gathered data through the creation of four research
tools validated and pilot tested. Moreover, three of the research tools (AChavQ, AFilQ, AEngQ)
were determined to be of ‘excellent’ reliability, while one is of ‘acceptable’ reliability (CogMT).
The study purposed to derive a model explaining the possible relationships, mediation or
moderation, of language attitude towards Chavacano with ethnicity, cognition towards mother
tongue and language attitude toward Filipino and English. The model with “best fit” showed that
that language attitude toward Filipino and English has a direct influence on cognition in the mother
tongue. In contrast, ethnicity’s influence is mediated by language attitude toward Chavacano. The
results and findings of this study provide vital information and insights in the implementation of
the Mother Tongue Based Education in a multilingual context.

Student journalists are trained to express and translate their outputs into paper. The preferred language medium they use to do so, however, may convey their perception and attitude towards languages. This study aimed to determine the preferred language that student journalists use in their articles, the reason for their preference, and their attitude towards English, Filipino, and their vernacular language. Mixed qualitative and quantitative methods were used as research design. Data were collected through distributing survey questionnaires to 58 student journalists in Mindano State Univeristy-Marawi during academic year 2013-2014 and conducting interviews to a random sample of 12 from those surveyed. Results showed that most of the student journalists prefer English while only a few uses Filipino and none prefer vernacular in writing. English is perceived by the student journalists to be understood by more people, dynamic and rich; formal, an indicator of better proficiency but not an indicator if intelligence and high social status. Comfortability, ability to express better, training, usage in school, and self-efficacy are the reported reasons why they prefer such language. Filipino and vernacular were least preferred due to lack of resources for reference and writing, lack of knowledge, and low self-efficacy on the usage of the medium. They said that if they were given the mastery of the languages, they are willing to write in Filipino and vernacular. Thus, there is a need to instill versatility of the usage of Filipino and vernacular among student journalists through adequate training and equal appreciation towards them.

There is a need to be proficient in the use of English among non-native speakers as they are now in a globally competitive world. Today, educators are facing with a challenge of teaching the students whose primary language is not English. Since the Philippines welcomes the English Language from the American colonizers, the Philippines today is the fifth largest English-speaking country in the world and second in the continent of Asia (Wikipedia). The English language has an important standing in global communication, hence both oral and written English skills are essential around the world. However, to many, speaking English seems to be a very challenging task. Since the aim of English education is not only to develop knowledge of grammar and written skills but also to teach oral English skills, this problem needs to be studied in order to remedy the situation. Abstract

A survey was conducted among twenty UPHSD Molino sophomore students to determine the more dominant and preferred spoken language in the classroom, and their perceived spoken language around them from home, environment, school, and the University. The communication dynamics among respondents in the same classroom were also taken into consideration by means of observation.
The results yielded the following:
A total of 95 percent of the respondents said they used Taglish (50  percent) or Filipino language (45 percent) at home.
Respondents said they more often used Taglish (80 percent), Filipino (15 percent) in the school or the University.
A total of 95 percent respondents perceived that Taglish (60 percent) and Filipino (35 percent) were the languages that they more oftenly use daily.
A total of 95 percent respondents perceived that Taglish (65  percent) and Filipino (35 percent) were the languages that they were more surrounded with daily.
Respondents said they could better articulate their ideas either in Taglish (65  percent) and Filipino (25 percent);  a handful (5 percent) said they were more comfortable expressing their ideas in English.
Majority said they felt that they could better understand concepts, theories, and other ideas in Taglish (60 percent), in English (25 percent), and in Filipino (10 percent).
Majority said they were more inclined to use Taglish (80 percent), English (10 percent), Filipino (5 percent) when participating during class discussions.
Respondents said they have been exposed to bilingual and vernacular instruction from 5 to 10 years (45 percent), 11 to 15 years (30  percent), 1 to 4 years (20 percent).
Majority believed that reading, writing, and grammar (55 percent), speaking (30 percent), and listening (10 percent) should be given more attention in the development of communication skills in the University.
The use of Taglish tend to gravitate from Taglish to the vernacular.
