Byzantine Hymnography

Аннотация: В статье описываются примеры сохранения силлабической структуры при переводе гимнографических текстов с греческого на классический сирийский язык. Методика перевода демонстрируется на материале нескольких «самогласнов дня» Триоди Постной-особой группы из 89 великопостных песнопений, имеющих палестинское происхождение. Текстологический анализ выбранных песнопений проводится на материале сирийских рукописных Триодей и Стихирарей (XI-XVI вв., в том числе доступных благодаря проекту HMML), греческого списка нового Тропология Sinait. ΝΕ. ΜΓ. 56 + 5, греческих рукописей Триоди и Стихираря (X-XIV вв.). Сирийские тексты демонстрируют практически полное совпадение по числу слогов с греческим оригиналом. Необходимость увеличения числа слогов обусловлена тем, что средняя длина слова в классическом сирийском языке меньше, чем в греческом. Для сохранения числа слогов переводчики дополняли текст однокоренными словами (например, «очистим... чисто»), синонимами («прости и оставь»), служебными частями речи (частицами и союзами), прилагательными, местоимениями, усложняли синтаксис. Рассматривается случай обогащения стихиры «Начнем людие, непорочный пост» за счет евангельского текста (Мф 6), что включает расширенное цитирование молитвы «Отче наш». Приводятся примеры несовпадения числа слогов в результате ошибок и изменений в греческих и сирийских рукописях, что делает необходимой работу с разными списками. В качестве главной причины использования данной методики перевода указывается необходимость приспособления византийских мелодий к сирийским текстам, что демонстрируется на материале сиро-мелькитской гимнографии с палеовизантийской (куаленской) нотацией. Настоящая статья посвящена описанию состава, палеографических, языковых и литургических особенностей одной из сирийских рукописей Ватиканской библиотеки - Vat. sir. 351, датируемой XV в. Бóльшая часть рукописи написана одним писцом, очень мелким и профессиональным почерком, но присутствуют и вставки других писцов, двух из них мы знаем по именам, указанным на полях (Юсуф и Салям). Рукопись написана преимущественно на классическом сирийском языке, однако в некоторых рубриках и текстах используется арабский язык. В составе Минеи присутствуют тексты Священного Писания: чтения Апостола и Евангелия в начале рукописи, в минейной частипрокимны, аллилуиарии, причастны, новозаветные чтения для утрени и литургии, псалмы на царских часах и избранные псалмы для пения после полиелея на великие праздники. Мы можем предполагать, что писец планировал объединить в одной книге всю Минею месячную, от сентября до августа. Однако этот эксперимент остался незавершенным: ежедневные службы находятся только в начале и конце рукописи (месяцы сентябрь-октябрь, часть ноября, август), а другие месяцы содержат выборку из наиболее праздничных дней. Таким образом, рукопись не может быть полноценно охарактеризована терминами типа «Минея месячная» или «Минея праздничная». Дни без службы содержат только указания на число, имя святого, часто с добавлением стихир, тропаря и кондака, обязательно с указаниями чтений на литургии; нередко писец оставлял пустое место после числа, из-за недостатка времени или невозможности найти нужные тексты. Переход от ежедневных служб к праздничной выборке и обратно расположен недалеко от больших вставок в рукопись, написанных другими писцами.

The article deals with three hymnographic works created by members of the secret monastic communities of Moscow's Vysoko-Petrovsky Monastery and dedicated to the memory of their deceased spiritual leaders. These are two canons by Archimandrite German (Polyansky), dedicated to the memory of the abbot of the monastery, Archbishop Bartholomew (Remov), written in the mid-1930s, and the canon of Nun Ignatia (Puzik) dedicated to the memory of Schiarchimandrite Ignatiy (Lebedev), written at the turn of the 1970s-1980s. These works reveal important aspects of the self-consciousness of the members of the Vysoko-Petrovsky communities, who described the spiritual state of the Christians of the Soviet era through an appeal to the biblical image of the three young men in the furnace of Babylon from the Book of Daniel and to the images of the martyrs of the first centuries of the Christian era. In addition, the works under consideration demonstrate their authors' deep penetration into the literary world of Orthodox worship, which allowed them to clothe their personal experiences in traditional hymnographic forms. В статье рассматриваются три гимнографических произведения, созданные членами тайных монашеских общин московского Высоко-Петровского монастыря и посвященные памяти их погибших духовных наставников. Это два канона архимандрита Германа (Полянского) памяти настоятеля монастыря архиепископа Варфоломея (Ремова), написанные в середине 1930-х гг., а также канон монахини Игнатии (Пузик), написанный на рубеже 1970−1980-х гг. в память о схиархимандрите Игнатии (Лебедеве). Эти произведения раскрывают важные аспекты самосознания членов высоко-петровских общин, описывавших духовное состояние христиан советской эпохи через апелляцию к библейскому образу трех отроков в печи вавилонской из книги пророка Даниила и к образам мучеников первых веков христианской эры. Кроме того, рассматриваемые произведения демонстрируют глубокое проникновение их авторов в художественный мир православного богослужения, что позволило им облекать личные переживания в традиционные гимнографические формы.

I submit to you today that the field of liturgical theology should be enlarged to accommodate a mystagogical dimension of Byzantine hymnography and liturgy which has remained largely unnoticed. This mystagogy-at least in some parts-is not new to biblical studies and to the research on early Jewish and Christian mysticism (or to the most recent scholarship on Byzantine iconography), but it has yet to be given a proper place in liturgical theology. In the latter, even fresh proposals are still beholden to psychologistic frameworks favoring (post-)modern issues of semiotics (or meaning-making) and performance (or expression-making), and this includes the newer proposals of "liturgy from above" as against "liturgy from below." The view of which I speak is centered in the presence of Christ as time-transcending and perceives the liturgy-in him-as the real time of all history.

This conference gathers scholars engaged in research on Greek hymns found in the earliest extant sources of all Eastern liturgical rites. The scope of inquiry includes not only hymns that may be regarded as part of the (pre-) history of the received Byzantine rite but also those composed in Greek for non-Byzantine traditions.

If we look at the history of the Georgian church chants from the early stages of Christianity to the modern times, all the parameters of the functioning of the cultural memory become clear. From the time of its creation to the present, this cultural phenomenon carries the function of an exhibit on the one hand, and on the other hand, comprises in itself the impulse of internal development, which is manifested in the aspiration of generations towards a stable phenomenon. The Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete is one of such monuments in the Georgian reality. It bears significant importance from the liturgical as well as scholarly points of view. It is a monument with a great research history. Its establishment within the Georgian ecclesiastical world took place simultaneous with the formation of the Georgian church service. The article presents the attitude of the Georgian hymnographers and scholars of church music and chants towards this monument from its creation (seventh century) up to the modern times. In Georgia, like other Christian countries, the historical path of chants goes from oral tradition to neumatic and finally to the notation systems. However, the path of the oral tradition is especially long in Georgia. Due to the difficult political situation, the notation system established in Europe from the eleventh century entered Georgia only at the end of the nineteenth century. This situation especially intensified the phenomenon of cultural memory, thus, Georgian chants were passed down orally, in a traditional manner from generation to generation for almost six centuries. This, too, was a kind of internal protest, the cultural memory opposed the dramatic political environment. In the nineteenth century, the Russian Empire abolished the autocephaly of the Georgian Church, threatening to eradicate the original traditions of the Georgian sacred music. In the 1880s, with the great efforts of The Committee for the Revival of Georgian Chant, it became possible to maintain a continuous Georgian heritage with the historical and cultural past and transfer church hymns to a five-line notation system. It should be noted that in the twentieth century the Soviet iron curtain was able to break down the 70-year-old chain of the cultural memory. Therefore, the study of hymns recorded in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries became the basis for restoring historical reality and returning traditional hymns to the church service. The Great Canon itself, like other church works, was created on the basis of the Scripture. In this way, it is a bearer of the historical memory. As Doru Costache mentioned, the Canon's "structure reiterates the pattern of nine scriptural odes and, albeit indirectly, by way of a Christian selection of passages, it mirrors the Scripture. Undoubtedly, this is a solid mode of connecting with Christianity's scriptural universe" 1 .

Among the many canons written by the Metropolitan of  Euchaita, St. John, called Mavropous (11th century), are two supplicatory Canons to the Most Holy Theotokos, “in anticipation of war”. The first one, although more widely known from the editions of the Euchologion, remains unpublished in its original form. In the Euchologion, the above Canon is modified, so as to be more appropriate to the more recent historical circumstances, those after the fall of Constantinople. In this article, the canon in question is published in transcription from the Vienna manuscript codex ÖNB Theol. gr. 78, of the 14th century.

Allow me to begin this contribution to our workshop with some observations on how I see the Byzantine liturgy. 1 I do not wish to steer our focus away from the issue of translation, but my points on translation will be informed by what I think the Byzantine liturgy is. And this must be prefaced by a disclaimer: I am not a liturgist, but a researcher of the scriptures. Nevertheless, about ten years ago I was emboldened to translate the Byzantine liturgy-specifically the liturgical books of the monastery of Simonopetra and the Psalter-by a sense that from the perspective of this liturgy, even in all its fluctuation, itself and the scriptures are one and the same thing. In most of my translation efforts I have had collaborators, especially my friend Fr. Matthew-Peter Butrie and His Eminence Archbishop Alexander (Golitzin), my bishop and former professor and academic adviser in my studies of early Christian mysticism. I know that they, too, see things quite similarly to the way I do, if not even identically, but I can only speak here for me. And my personal translation philosophy and practices have always drawn on my sense that the Byzantines who gave us the liturgy saw scripture and liturgy as one and the same thing. The scriptural character of the Byzantine liturgy has been highlighted for many decades and studies on this are being published every year. 2 In a book which will appear soon, I am arguing that the Byzantine liturgy in all its dimensions-words, architecture, gestures, times, orientation, iconography, etc.-presents itself as the real time of the scriptures. 3 In worship, it is not that the participant brings to mind things of old, informs himself of what the scriptures say, or even re-actualizes the past and anticipates a distant eschatological future. On the contrary, from the vantage point of the Byzantine worship the scriptures have no life of their own as a past reality. Rather, there is no past; in the liturgical here-and-now, history and space

The first ever Introduction to Byzantine liturgical books
The world of Byzantine liturgical book types is fascinating but also confusing. While they are central to the study and celebration of Byzantine Liturgy, no one work offers an overview of their history, contents, and structure. This volume offers for the first time an introduction to the major types of Byzantine liturgical books, their taxonomy, origins, development, and contents.

Catholic Servant (April 2025): 1, 9. (Reprinted in Catholic World Report afterward.) In this article, I: explain the Catholic (and Orthodox) attention to the Blessed Virgin Mary, especially in Lent; give a brief history of what we know as "The" Akathist Hymn in its development and, more certain, its usage; and finally look at a few of the salient themes. In my conclusion, I observe recent attention to this hymn in the west, particularly from Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI, who considered this hymn a part of the universal Catholic patrimony.

Eusebius transmits a fragment of Porphyry's Contra Christianos in which the philosopher claimed that a disease or plague (νóσoς) had seized the city for many years because there was no longer any sojourn (ἐπιδηµία) of Asclepius and the gods there. Since Jesus was honored, no one experienced any public help from the gods. Porphyry's claim that Asclepius and the gods no longer dwelt in Rome resembles one of the elements of the ancient Roman ritual of evocatio, in which the tutelary deities were called out of a city by a Roman commander. It is only an analogy, since the Christians did not promise the tutelary deities that their images would be carried to their own city and given a cult, and they certainly did not make use of an obscure Roman military ceremony. Whether or not the ritual was practiced in the Imperium is not the central question of this article. Instead I wish to show that the implicit debate between Eusebius and Porphyry alludes to similar arguments between pagans and Christians in antiquity and that there are important analogies between Porphyry's argument about the departure of Rome's tutelary gods due to the presence of worship of the Christian deity in the city and the ritual of evocatio.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple was first introduced in the Holy City by St. Cyril of Jerusalem. Initially, this festive innovation was celebrated exclusively in Palestine, but it gradually began to spread to Armenia, Georgia, Byzantium, Antioch, Syria, and Rome.

Thanks to the Armenian Lectionary, a paramount witness of the long-lost Jerusalem Typikon, this Christian celebration found its place in the calendar of the Armenian Church. A comprehensive historical analysis confirms that the Feast of the Presentation was already being celebrated in Armenia in the first half of the 5th century, whreas in Byzantium the Hypapante was officially introduced only in the first half of the 6th century. Thus, after Jerusalem, the Armenian Church was the first to adopt this new festivity into its liturgical practice.

This article provides a first edition and English translation of the earliest known Greek Quadragesima collection, preserved in the 9th-century New Tropologion from St Catherine’s Monastery on Sinai Gr. NE ΜΓ 56 and ΜΓ 5, and compares it to the previous hymns stratum of Old Iadgari, the Georgian Lectionary, contemporary Quadragesima collections in the 8th-9th c St. Petersburg Rossijskaja Nacional’naja biblioteka [RNB] Gr. 87, and posterior three earliest Greek Constantinopolitan Triodia RNB Gr. 712, Sinai Gr. 734-735, Vat. Gr. 771, speculating about the development of the structures, hymn types, and interpretations of this hymnographical book of the Byzantine rite.

By the 8th century, a need for a development of a new revised version of the old Hagiopolite Tropologion (Iadgari), the main hymnal of Jerusalem tradition, appeared. Based on the earliest 8th–9th centuries manuscript
witnesses of the works of Cosmas of Maiuma, Sinai Greek MG NF 56+5, and National Library of Russia Greek 29, the author reconstructs the poetʼs contribution to the renewal of the Tropologion and examines, how he solved three problems, i.e. 1) calendar-repertoire, and replaced common propers with special ones, 2) architectonic, and standardized the structures, and developed the patterns for other authors can create new hymns, which correlated to the hymnal composition, 3) interpretive and poetic, and upgraded the artistic value of the texts. Cosmas composed new hymns for great feasts and saints who previously had no or incomplete propers. He stabilized the shape of canon, with eight odes (1, 3–9), and developed heirmoi, which served as poetic and melodic models for subsequent troparia. Finally, he interpreted the Lectionary readings in accordance with Byzantine homiletic and theological thought, and created his unique exegesis; he adapted ancient vocabulary into Christian liturgical
poetry. For the contribution to the renewal of Jerusalem hymnography, Cosmas already in Byzantium received the palm of primacy, as it was stated by Nicephorus Callistus Ksanthopoulos, and recognition through all his texts were built up into the further hymnographical tradition./ В статье на основании впервые выявленных автором древнейших рукописных источников гимнов Космы Маюмского, Sin. Он заменил общие службы особыми, заново составил гимны на великие праздники и святым, которым ранее не имелось последования или имелось неполное; зацементировал форму канона из восьми песен (1, 3–9); разработал ирмосы нового типа, служившие поэтико-мелодическими моделями для тропарей; интерпретировал читавшиеся фрагменты Лекционаря в контексте византийского гомилетического и богословского наследия, создавая свое уникальное толкование; впервые включил античную лексику в христианскую литургическую поэзию. My study, Hannibals Alpenübergang: On Timber Harvesting in Treeless, Dismal, and Desolate Regions, was prompted by one of Honoré de Balzac’s enigmatic statements in the dedication of his work Sur Catherine de Médicis to Monsieur le Marquis de Pastoret. Balzac references Hannibal’s crossing of the Apls and the use of vinegar by the Carthaginian general in the latter’s effort to march across the Apennines—“to say nothing of the vinegar with which some learned men have dressed the Alpine cliffs.” My study focuses on Hannibal’s legendary feat of repairing an alpine path which had been broken up and made  impassable by a landslide for a stretch of about a thousand feet, or three hundred meters, on the cliff’s face at an altitude between 6,000 and 10,000 feet. This fact is recorded by Greek and Roman historiographers, including the cautious and distrustful Polybius, but the technical aspects of the repair are either disputed when referenced or altogether omitted. My monograph argues in favor of the alleged hybrid engineering modalities applied by Hannibal to restore the path’s continuity as related by Livy and his tradition, including felling trees to generate fire for fire setting and wetting the heated limestone rocks with vinegar to crack them open and then dismantle them with iron implements. My study likewise counters views denying the presence of trees at the height of the broken path and objections relative to the existence of the alpine treeline at that elevation—a fact which would supposedly account for the state of the famished elephants and pack-animals at that spot as witnessed in the sources. Moreover, my monograph offers a novel interpretations of Livy’s alleged “gross misconception” of Polybius’s reference to the nearly thousand feet long stretch of the road carried away by a landslip, which supposedly Livy misconstrued as applying not to the damaged path but to “the distance from the top to the bottom of the slip.” My novel reading of Livy’s “misconception” takes into account the fact that the Latin text in that passage is corrupt and that the established edition has endorsed Valla’s emendation which, though brilliant, remains just that, an emendation.

Although appearing here as a separate volume, this monograph is projected to appear in a forthcoming volume comprising a series of similar essay-style pieces. These are intended to comment upon or clarify some enigmatic side issues which arise alongside a wealth of historical references that Balzac weaves into the introduction of his masterly nuanced, haunting study of Catherine de' Medici—Sur Catherine de Médicis. This forthcoming work may therefore be styled a companion volume to Balzac’s introduction of his Catherine de' Medici, with a view to shedding light on selected topics interlacing that introduction mostly in the form of historic conundrums. Some of these are riddles which have befuddled scholars over the years as well as Balzac’s readers and Balzac himself. In certain instances, they stimulate interest and research to the present day. Needless to say that one of Balzac’s most insightful contentions in this outstanding piece of political theory, viz., his introduction to Sur Catherine de Médicis, pertains to his brilliant take on dogmatics: to wit, the implication that in essence all theological thought is ultimately political thought and that as such it deeply impacts social order and political structure. Balzac converts theology into an immediate political reality, and this, it appears, may also be said of Catherine, of Philip of Spain, and of the duke of Alba as well. It is likewise manifest in the eventual overthrow of monarchy and establishment of western democracies, a development that traces its origins in the dogmatics of the Reformation, especially those generated and fostered by Calvinism—always according to Balzac. In that sense, Max Weber’s later thesis on the complex interconnections between the Reformation and capitalism appears to be an outgrowth of, or at least anticipated in, Balzac’s political thought. It is also interesting that just like Weber the type of Reformation that Balzac had in mind was fundamentally Calvinism.

In this article, I publish and study for the first time a Greek corpus of hymns for the Liturgy of Saint James (JAS) from the ninth and tenth centuries codices, i.e. Sinai Greek NF MG 56+5, 8, 24, 83, Codex Sinaiticus Liturgicus National Library of Russia Greek 44. I try to understand how the hymns pertaining to the entrance, synaxis, the transfer of the holy gifts, communion, and the apolysis functioned in the liturgy of Jerusalem in these centuries. With regard to the number of hymns, the manner of their performance (independently or with a refrain), the choice of text (archaic or new, original or adopted from another proper), and terminology, the codices demonstrate plasticity, variability, and tendency towards unification. MG 56+5 reveals the cancellation of special entrance hymns, the decreasing number of hymns for the transfer of the holy gifts, and the development of apolysis hymns. On the contrary, the more archaic NLR Greek 44 includes entrance hymns, but does not know any apolysis hymns. Original responsorial psalmic verses are still seldom present for the hymns of the transfer of the holy gifts in both NLR Greek 44 and in MG 56+5, and are chanted together with some synaxis hymns, according to MG 56+5. The most specific in content are the archaic synaxis hymns, which were a response to the lection of the day and included its paraphrase; the hymns for the transfer of the holy gifts hymns, which grew out from Psalm 23: 7–10 or Isaiah 6:3; and the communion hymns, reflecting either the Last Supper narration or the melismos prayers of JAS. Most of the hymns were general and drawn from the repertoire of other offices. Of the seventy-six hymns studied, fourteen were found in earlier Jerusalem sources, while forty one entered the Byzantine hymnograhical

обнаруживает отмирание гимнов входного и на перенос святых Даров, развитие — гимна на отпуст; более архаичный по составу — в РНБ Греч.44, напротив, еще включает входные гимны и не знает — на отпуст. Отголосок респонсорного стихословия Псалтири, некогда бывшего ядром песнопений ИАК, документируется во входных гимнах и на перенос святых Даров в РНБ Греч. 44, в архаичной литургии мира в MG 56+5 и указании на стих для некоторых гимнов синаксиса. Отличаются по содержанию древние гимны на синаксис:
они были ответом на евангельское чтение дня и являлись его парафразом. Кроме них, гимны на перенос святых Даров, выросшие из стихословия 23-го псалма (Пс. 23: 7–10, аллилуарии), либо книги пророка Исайи (Ис. 6:3, агиологии). Наконец, причастны, содержащие темы Тайной вечери или раздробления Агнца. Большинство же гимнов неспецифичны, вторичны, привлечены из репертуара других служб. In this article the author reconstructs drawing on data from two codices
from Sinai, ― the 8th‑9th-century new tropologion Sin. NF MG 56+5 and the 9th-century lectionary National Library of Russia Gr. 44 ― how the feast of Archangel Michael on June 6 could have been celebrated at this time in the Melkite Greek speaking communities in Sinai paeninsula / Egypt. Previously, the feast was associated primarily with Coptic, Arabic, Ethiopien literature, where it appeared in 8th century. The data of MG 56+5 (as well as Sin. Syr. 48, 10th century) reveals, that by the 9th and 10th centuries the feast received a region-wide status and was also significant for Greek and Syriac -speaking Melkite communities. In MG 56+5 the feast is determined as ‘panegyri’, includes two propers (one for the afterfeast), aposticha and hymns for JAS, what was comparable to the propers of the great feasts. Both MG 56+5 and NLR Greek 44 combine Jerusalem texts (Ps 103:4, Hebr 1:1–12, John Damascene’s canon) and regional data (hymn Ἐκ τῶν φοβερῶν). The presentation in the hymns of the Archangel Michael as standing before the altar of God, being intercessor for
humankind at the Last Judgement, minister of Lord, were drawn from the wide Biblical background (Dan 7:9–10, Dan 12:1–2, 3 Bar 11: 2–4, Ps 103:4, Hebr 1:1–12, etc.), including the service lections. The use of atypical for hymnography vocabulary in the second, regional, canon (φύτλη, εὐωχία, συνευωχοῦνται, ὑπέρτατος φύσις, διαίρεσις τε καὶ ἕνωσις) witnesses to the author’s acquaintance with the ancient
literature and the writings of Alexandrinian fathers, suggesting as plausible the location of the text and the church mentioned in it in Lower Egypt. Whereas the canon of John Damascene was integrated into the corpus of Byzantine hymnography, the regional texts have completely fallen out of use, but serve as evidence of how diverse the ancient regional rites before their Byzantinization were./ В статье публикуются, с переводом на русский язык и комментарием,формуляр «панигира архангела Михаила» 6 июня по новому тропологию Sin. стол Евр 1:1–12, канон Иоанна Дамаскина) и локальные тексты (гимн «От страшных», второй, локальный, канон). Топосы «предстоящий престолу / жертвеннику Бога, ходатай о людях», в том числе на страшном суде, «служитель Бога», обусловлены уже сформировавшимися на базе библейского контекста (Дан 7:9–10,
Дан 12:1–2, 3 Вар 11:2–4, Пс 103:4, Евр 1:1–12 и др.), частью которого были чтения службы, представлениями о роли архангела Михаила. Использование специфичной для гимнографии лексики во втором каноне (φύτλη, «род», εὐωχία, «пир», συνευωχοῦνται, «вместе пируют», ὑπέρτατος φύσις, «высшая природа», διαίρεσις τε καὶ ἕνωσις, «соединение и разделение») свидетельствует о знакомстве автора с античной литературой и сочинениями отцов Александрийского круга и не исключает вероятность локализации текста и упоминающегося в нем храма в Нижнем Египте. В византийский гимнографический корпус вошел иерусалимский канон Иоанна Дамаскина, а региональные тексты были полностью забыты, но свидетель-
ствуют о многообразии древних региональных традиций до их византинизации.

Cet article rend compte de la socialisation politique de juif•ve•s orthodoxes vivant dans deux communautés en France, à Strasbourg et à Aix-les-Bains. Ces communautés correspondent à deux profils d'orthodoxie juive (les haredim, qui rejettent au maximum les contacts avec l'hors-groupe, et les Modern-Orthodox, qui les acceptent) organisées selon deux modèles : l'enclave, à Aix-les-Bains, et le ghetto, à Strasbourg. Dans l'enclave, la socialisation haredi fabrique un rapport au politique distant et patronné par des rabbins, alors que dans le ghetto, la socialisation Modern-Orthodox se mêle à diverses influences socialisatrices dont des contacts avec l'hors-groupe pour produire un rapport plus investi au politique. La socialisation politique de ces juif‧ve•s orthodoxes repose ainsi sur leur socialisation religieuse intégraliste et leurs contacts, plus ou moins distants, avec l'hors-groupe. Cet article 1 s'intéresse à la différence de comportements politiques de juif•ve•s orthodoxes appartenant à deux communautés distinctes, à Aix-les-Bains et Strasbourg 2. Pour comprendre cette divergence il apparaît nécessaire d'étudier leur socialisation politique en considérant leur socialisation religieuse et leurs contacts avec l'hors-groupe. Devenus classiques en science politique française, des travaux, essentiellement centrés sur le catholicisme 3 , montrent que la religion façonne les valeurs et conceptions morales du monde 4 , ainsi que le rapport au politique 5. Toutes choses égales par ailleurs, un‧e croyant‧e catholique en France aura plus tendance à voter à droite surtout quand son degré d'intégration religieuse est fort 6. Cependant, la dimension religieuse n'agit pas de manière uniforme 7 , et cet article montre qu'il convient, dans le cas d'une religion minorisée, de la penser en lien avec le rapport qu'elle fabrique aux majoritaires.

I n modern musicology, which studies various polyphonic traditions intensively, it would appear that there are no longer any unknown types of polyphony and undiscovered forms of notating music. The most exotic musical phenomena have been researched and transcribed, and a good many of them have been digitized. Still, one must recognize that the focus of these studies up until now has been predominantly on Western and Central European polyphonic schools, while one significant polyphonic tradition, namely, early Russian polyphony, which, moreover, occupied a fairly extensive historical period, is only now beginning to be investigated systematically. The purpose of this article is to introduce my project involving a critical edition of Russian neumatic polyphony 1 . This edition is the culmination of my work on deciphering neumatic scores of the most festive type of early Russian polyphony-four-part Demestvenny singing (or Demestvo). The object of the present study is the Demestvenny All-Night Vigil recorded in a unique source-a ceremonial illuminated codex belonging to the 17 th -century Choir of the Tsar's and Patriarchal Singing Clerics, which is now kept in the British Library-Add. MS 30063. 1 The edition is planned as part of the dissertation project "The All-Night Vigil in early Russian polyphony," which I am preparing under the guidance of Professor Dr Christoph Flamm at the Musicology Seminar of the University of Heidelberg. Within its scope, the dissertation examines three types of early Russian polyphony using examples from the All-Night Vigil office. A comprehensive analysis of the hymns themselves will be included in the dissertation but remains outside the scope of this publication.

In this article, I provide the editio princeps and the English translation of a katanyktic kanon composed by Neophytos Enkleistos, a well-known exponent of Cypriot religious and monastic literature of the middle Byzantine period (1134-1214). Neophytos was a prolific author of ascetic and moral works. Within his Book of Fifty Chapters, he discussed the importance of κατάνυξις (compunction) in ascetic practice and included katanyktic poems composed by himself to help his readers achieve compunction and repentance during prayer. In addition to these poems, the manuscript tradition has transmitted a hitherto unpublished kanon, which presents the personal confession of a repentant sinner to Christ, to obtain final salvation after death. This text is transmitted by three witnesses: Monac. BSB 201 (s. XIII ex.), Par. gr. 399 (s. XIV) and Athen. EBE 2352 (s. XVI). It consists of eight odes and presents 448 verses in total.

Ambrose clearly shows this in his treatises on the patriarchs. This paper introduces George Eugenikos, the father of John and Mark Eugenikos, as a hymnographer for the first time. In addition to a brief biographical introduction, it contains an editio princeps of his kanon on Saint Spyridon, celebrated on 12 December, and a literary analysis of the text. The focus lies on its composition, structure, language, and style. Special emphasis is given to the connection between the kanon and the upcoming celebration of the Nativity. Lastly, the paper contextualizes the hymn within the Byzantine hagiographical and hymnographical tradition.

The review observes the 2023 publication of Sinai Glagolitic Fragments from Euchologii Sinaiticus of the 11th century. They were retrieved in 1975 in the library of the St. Catherine monastery on Sinai. The review suggests the observation of opinions on the content of these fragments and their attribution to Euchologii Sinaiticus, the analysis of the views of their publishers, and several notes on the errors of the publication.

В монографии рассматриваются основные источниковедческие вопросы, связанные с трактовкой античной литературной традиции, надписей (латинских, греческих, индийских) из южной части Красного моря и Южной Аравии, демонстрирующих процесс освоения эллинистическим и римским миром южных окраин ойкумены.
Основной акцент в книге сделан на наиболее дискуссионных источниковедческих вопросах при работе с основными нарративными источниками, а также c надписями, привлекаемыми для исследования политической и экономической истории античного мира во II в. до н.э. – IV в. н.э. В книге впервые предлагается полный перевод на русский язык сочинения Агафархида Книдского «Об Эритрейском море», а также исторический и литературоведческий комментарий,  проводится сравнительный анализ двух рукописей корпуса сочинений «Малых греческих географов», в которых сохранился «Перипл Эритрейского моря», и на основе их сравнительного анализа дается новый, уточненный перевод этого источника, устанавливается верное чтение и обсуждается трактовка надписей ряда традиций и локализаций – латинских из Северо-Западной Аравии и из южной части Красного моря (архипелаг Фарасан), греческих и индийских с острова Сокотра, реконструируются связи с Сокотры с Римом и Восточной Африкой в IV в. н.э. Также предлагается анализ происхождения самого понятия «Красного моря».
Хронологически исследование ограничивается рамками эллинистической и римской эпох (последняя четверть IV в. до н.э. – IV в. н.э.).

Η αναζήτηση της ιδεατής διαλεκτικής μεταξύ Λόγου και Μέλους στην εκκλησιαστική τελετουργία αποτελεί μιαν διαρκώς επίκαιρη αδήριτη αναγκαιότητα. Δεν υφίσταται ως σήμερα κάποια διεθνώς καθιερωμένη και παγκοίνως αποδεκτή σχετική τακτική, που θα οδηγούσε προς παρόμοια, απρόσκοπτα αρμονική, σύμπλευση Λόγου και Μέλους στη λατρεία του Θεού. Διάσπαρτα, βέβαια, εντοπίζονται εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσες ιδέες και επωφελείς τακτικές, οι οποίες όμως δεν είναι δυνατόν να θεωρηθεί ότι καλύπτουν επαρκώς το διαπιστούμενο κενό. Πάντως, οι σχετικές αναφορές Χρυσάνθου του εκ Μαδύτων αποτελούν, αναμφίβολα, θεμελιώδες σημείο αναφοράς και συνιστούν ισχυρό κέντρο εκκίνησης κάθε περαιτέρω σχετικής αναζήτησης. Στην παρούσα ανακοίνωση, προβάλλεται με έμφαση αφενός μεν η καθοριστική σημασία του ποιητικού κειμένου, πάνω στο οποίο αναπτύσσεται η μουσική, αφετέρου δε η συνακόλουθη μουσική ανάπτυξη, καθεαυτήν. Ιδιαίτερα αναδεικνύονται τα φαινόμενα επαναλήψεων ή μεταθέσεων των επιμέρους μουσικών γραμμών. Η διεισδυτική εξέταση αυτής της διαλεκτικής μεταξύ Λόγου και Μέλους αποτελεί ανυπέρβλητη προϋπόθεση όχι μόνον για την κατανόηση των βασικών αρχών σύμπλευσης Λόγου και Μέλους αλλά και για τη σταδιακή καθιέρωση κοινών τακτικών που θα διασφαλίζουν την εφαρμογή του συναμφότερου.

Резюме Статья посвящена двум разным образам из песнопений службы преподобному Александру Ошевенскому-тропаря и кондака, написанных иеромонахом Никольско-Успенского Ошевенского монастыря Феодосием в 1566 или 1567 г. Первый-образ «небопарного орла»-рассматривается в контексте византийской и южнославянской гимнографии. Делается вывод, что, в отличие от ранних примеров, в которых появлению образа сопутствовал агиографический сюжет, примеры из русской гимнографии XVI в. демонстрируют его свободное употребление и соединение с другими, в частности образом рая. Второй-образ «чужого» родительского дома из кондака святому, введенный посредством цитаты из песнопения Алексею человеку Божию, демонстрирует один из примеров поэтики уподобления.
