The aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticide activity of diatomaceous earth (DE), at different temperatures, on two populations of Tribolium castaneum and Rhyzopertha dominica previously diagnosed as resistant and susceptible to phosphine. The efficiency of DE in the control of the insects was evaluated at temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 ± 2 ºC. The experiments were accomplished in Petri dishes containing 35 g of whole-wheat grain treated with DE in the dose of 1.0 kg t-1. The control was constituted by untreated wheat grain. Each Petri dish was infested with 30 adult insects. Insect mortality was registered seven days after the beginning of the bioassays. Acanthoscelides Schilsky is a large genus of neotropical bruchid beetles, in which most species show host plant specialization. Acanthoscelides obtectus and Acanthoscelides obvelatus are two sibling species specialized on Phaseolus beans, and are therefore considered pests. Up to now, the status of these two taxa has remained unclear, the few studies conducted having failed to elucidate whether these are two differentiated species or a single morphologically variable species. In addition, A. obvelatus has not been taken into account in the great majority of studies of bean bruchids. In this morphological and genetic study, we show that A. obtectus and A. obvelatus are two ÔtrueÕ non-hybridizing species, which diverged about 22 Mya. Although the two species demonstrate only few morphological differences, we point out some diagnostic characters that enable their identification in the field. We also address a genetic method of differentiation of the two species, based on species-specific microsatellite loci. The strong morphological resemblance of these two species, despite their ancient divergence, may be the result of evolutionary stasis, which could be the consequence of stabilizing selection. Niche differentiation could enable the two species to coexist indefinitely.

Nanoparticles represent a promising technology to enhance the efficacy of bioactive materials and a large number of studies showed the effectiveness of nanostructured materials against various arthropod species of economic importance. In this work nanostructured alumina (NSA) was prepared using sol-gel method and the effect of NSA was evaluated as seed protectant against the main seed-infesting insect pests Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) Stegobium paniceum (L.) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), and Tribolium confusum Jacquelin du Val (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Besides, we tested the effects of NSA on seed germination and plant growth and finally, we assessed the presence of NSA as a contaminant in the leaves of bean plants germinated from NSA-treated seeds. The results showed significant insecticidal activity of NSA against the three tested species. After sixteen days, the percentage of insect mortality at the highest NSA concentration tested (400 mg kg À1 ) was 100.00% for S. paniceum followed by O. surinamensis (80.64%) and T. confusum (79.41%). Besides, in-vitro tests indicated that NSA has no effects on seeds germination and on radicle and shoot elongation. No effects of NSA were also observed in pot tests on the bean's plants. No differences were recorded in the leaves area, stoma density and roots length. On the contrary, the shoot of plants from NSA-treated beans was about 66% higher than the one of the non-treated plants (shoot, 15.07 cm for the control and 22.76 cm for NSA-treated plants). Finally, no contamination by alumina particles was found by EDX-system coupled with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) on the surface of the P. vulgaris leaves obtained from NSA-treated beans. Overall, the results showed that NSA could be an effective protective agent for the control insect pests during the seeds storage.

The major cause of important post-harvest losses in northern Cameroon is due to the attacks of insects pests. These beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera) during their development depreciate food in storage, they are able to destroy a whole stock in a very short period of time. To protect stored products against these insects, synthetic insecticides and many other biological or physical methods are used, very important amount of work had been carried out on this subject. This review summarises the importance and the diversification of stored grain pests in Cameroon and presents current methods. Hence, the review highlights the use of the essential oils from spices as an important user and consumer friendly method to protect grain in storage.

Quatre huiles essentielles obtenues par hydrodistillation a partir des plantes marocaines de la famille des myrtacees et lamiacees sont testees pour determiner leur activite insecticide vis-a-vis des adultes et des larves de la mineuse de pois chiche ( Liriomyza cicerina. R). La menthe pouliot, avec une dose de 33µl/l d’air a cause une mortalite de 100% sur les adultes et les larves, apres trois heures et six heures d’exposition, respectivement. L’eucalyptus a montre une mortalite de 100% avec les doses de 33, et 83 µl/l, apres six et trois heures d’exposition pour les adultes et les larves, respectivement. Puisque le test de l’activite insecticide de ces huiles essentielles par fumigation a montre des resultats prometteurs, il serait souhaitable d’etudier d’autres modes d’actions pour le controle de la mineuse sur la culture de pois chiche.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a nontoxic and efficient method to control many insect pests of stored grains, but there is no information about the viability of its use for controlling the Mexican bean weevil Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boheman, 1833) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae). Laboratory assays were conducted under different temperature and DE dosage combinations in order to determine the effect of such interactions to control this pest species. Bean samples were treated with 0.0; 0.50; 0.75 and 1.00 g of DE/kg of grain. Couples of Z. subfasciatus were placed in the vials of each treatment and kept in rearing chambers at 15, 20, 27 and 30 o C, 70 ± 10 % r.h., and 24 h scotophase. Diatomaceous earth at any dosage tested caused significant Z. subfasciatus mortality, especially in temperature of 27 and 30 o C. After five days of exposure, death rates of Z. subfasciatus were about 100 % for all DE dosages and in temperature above 20 o C. However, at 27 o C the insects reproduced and laid a large number of eggs before dying. The use of 0.75 and 1.00 g of DE/kg dosages is recommended based on the tests. The interaction of DE and temperature leads to almost 100 % of mortality on the fifth day of exposure. It was concluded that Z. subfasciatus is very susceptible to DE treated beans.

However, in recent years, alternative methods for controlling pests have gained significance due to the emergence of toxic effects of pesticides on non-target organisms. Recently, Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is widely utilized for control storage pests. Therefore, it is considered that a local Diatomaceous Earth Almina could be used for the potential control of Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L., 1758) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) and Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say, 1831) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Almina® DE was applied at varying doses (125, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 ppm) (mg DE/ kg grains), and mortality rates were assessed at 24, 48, 72, and 96 hours. The highest mortality rates achieved were 100% for O. surinamensis after 96 hours with the 1000 ppm dose and for A. obtectus after 48 hours with doses of 500, 750, and 1000 ppm DE. In addition, the lowest LT50 and LT90 values were determined as 20.5, and 45.6 hours at 1000 ppm for O. surinamensis. For A. obtectus, LT50 and LT90 values at 250 and 125 ppm were 14.2 and 56.5 hours, and 51.4 and 95.7 hours, respectively. Consequently, Almina® DE can be considered a good alternative to synthetic chemicals to control two important stored product pests, O. surinamensis and A. obtectus.

Tomato (Solanum esculentum Mill) is one of the most consumed in the world with a production of 124 million tons of vegetables. However, the growth of this culture runs into constraints to plant health. To find alternatives to synthetic fungicides which represent the means of control used by most gardeners, a study was conducted on the extracts (essential oils and powders of fruits and leaves) of Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A. Rich. (Annonaceae) and two synthetic fungicides (Banko-plus and mancozebe) to test their antifungal potency of Sclerotium rolfsii. Fifteen isolates of Trichoderma sp. are also used for quality antibiotic and fertilizer for crops. At the end of the in vitro tests, it was revealed that the essential oil of fruits was higher than the other extracts on mycelial growth of Sclerotium rolfsii inhibition rate. BACKGROUND: The response of virgin females of the legume pest Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) to headspace extracts of volatiles collected from flowers of a nectar plant, Daucus carota, was investigated using behaviour (four-arm olfactometry) and coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography (GC-EAG). RESULTS: Odours from inflorescences were significantly more attractive to virgin female beetles than clean air. Similarly, a sample of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) collected by air entrainment (dynamic headspace collection) was more attractive to beetles than a solvent control. In coupled GC-EAG experiments with beetle antennae and the VOC extract, six components showed EAG activity. Using coupled GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and GC peak enhancement with authentic standards, the components were identified as-pinene (S:R 16:1), sabinene, myrcene, limonene (S:R 1:3), terpinolene and (S)-bornyl acetate. Females preferred the synthetic blend of D. carota EAG-active volatiles to the solvent control in bioassays. When compared directly, odours of D. carota inflorescences elicited stronger positive behaviour than the synthetic blend. CONCLUSION: This is the first report of behaviourally active volatiles linked to pollen location for A. obtectus, and development of the six-component blend is being pursued, which could underpin the design of semiochemical-based field management approaches against this major pest of stored products.

Experiments were conducted in the laboratory to evaluate the bioefficacy of essential and vegetable oils of Zanthoxylum xanthoxyloides (Rutaceae) against Acanthoscelides obtectus (Coleoptera: Bruchidae). The chemical composition of the essential oil and the fatty acid composition of the vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of Z. xanthoxyloides were determined. The insecticidal activities of these oils and the associated aromatized clay powder were evaluated against A. obtectus. Both oils were strongly repellent (100% repellency at 0.501 μl/cm2 essential oil and 3.144 μl/cm2 vegetable oil) and highly toxic (LC50 = 0.118 μl/cm2 for essential oil) to this beetle after contact on filter paper. La lutte chimique utilisée en agriculture apparaît comme responsable de la pollution de la plupart des biotopes et un préjudice à la santé humaine. La recherche des méthodes alternatives de protection des denrées stockées contre les ravageurs de maïs en post-récolte en particulier «Sitophilus sp.» considéré comme un insecte important et très fréquent dans les entrepôts de maïs semble nécessaire. Pour réduire les toxicités qui incombent à ces produits chimiques, l'utilisation des biopesticides d'origine végétale parait une solution à l'avenir pour réduire les infestations et les formes nocives des produits chimiques. En effet, le patrimoine végétal du Burundi semble ignoré par les chercheurs alors qu'il contient beaucoup d'espèces végétales dotées de substances actives pouvant contribuer à la résolution des problèmes cihaut cités. Le présent travail a pour objectif d'extraire l'huile essentielle d'Eucalyptus maidenii à l'aide d'un appareil formulé et d'incorporer cette huile dans la poudre de Citrus limon afin d'évaluer l'efficacité de ce mélange dans la lutte contre les insectes ravageurs des grains de maïs en conservation «Sitophilus sp.». Le rendement d'extraction obtenu (3,6%) à l'aide de l'appareil formulé est proche de ceux d'autres auteurs (4 à 5%) qui ont utilisé les appareils d'extraction de de type Clevenger. Après quatre mois de conservation, le taux d'attaque des grains de maïs a été en moyenne de 1,58% dans les lots témoins contre 0,20% à 0,75% seulement dans les lots traités. Le taux de mortalité des insectes apparus s'est élevé jusqu'à 100% dans presque tous les lots traités après quatre mois de conservation. Le nombre d'insectes «Sitophilus sp.» apparus a été en moyenne de sept dans les lots témoins contre deux seulement dans les lots traités. Les coefficients de corrélation ont montré que le traitement immédiat des lots donne de meilleurs résultats par rapport au traitement tardif tandis que l'analyse de la variance a montré qu'il n'y a pas de différence significative entre les deux types de mélange (poudre de Citrus limon + 5% d'HE et poudre de Citrus limon + 10% d'HE) en matière de lutte contre les insectes ravageurs des grains de maïs.

The length of exposure time to Bifenthrin on four strains of larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus Horn (Coloeoptera: Bostrichidae) was studied in the laboratory at 28 -33C and 70 – 85% relative humidity. Five serial dilutions of the toxicant ranging from 0.031 to 0.0012 g/ml, including a control were used. Mortality was recorded at 3 hourly intervals of 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours post-treatment. Data were analysed using log10 versus probit regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that significant (P<0.05) dosage-related mortality responses were recorded at the different time intervals during the first 3 and 6 hours of exposure. Nevertheless, significant mortalities (P<0.05) occurred after 9 to 12 hours post-contact with the insecticide. The Ibadan strain appeared to be more susceptible with LD50 value of 10.19 μg/ml compared with the other strains, while the Benue strain showed more tolerance to the test insecticide with LD50 of 29.60 μg/ml. Stored seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris L. in are the target of several insects like Acanthoscelides obtectus Say. These pests can cause losses greater than 80 % after six to seven months of storage. The present study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal effects of Moringa oleifera seeds on adults of A. obtectus in storage through two compositions (ie powdery and oily). Four concentrations of oils (3.33; 6.66; 9.99 and 13.33 μl/g), four powder concentrations (4; 16.67; 33.33 and 50 %) and one negative control (C0 = 0 μL / mL) for each composition were used. The experiment was conducted in the laboratory, with four repetitions. The results of the oil contact toxicity test revealed 100 % mortality at doses of 300 and 400 μL after two days of exposure. As for Moringa powder, the insecticidal effect was less pronounced for all doses with a mortality rate of 55 % at day 5 for doses 10 and 15 g. The inhibition of eggs laid and their viability is a function of the concentration of Moringa oil. On the other hand, the powder had no effect on the number of eggs laid and rather stimulated the viability of the eggs. Moringa oil prevents weight loss of stored bean seeds with a null loss percentage at doses of 300 and 400 μL. As for the powder, it had no effect on the weight loss of bean seeds in storage. The powder and oil of Moringa seeds did not affect the germination capacity of the seeds for all the doses tested. Moringa seed oil can therefore be exploited in the integrated control of the pest of common bean seeds in storage.

In the context of valorization of aromatic and medicinal plants of the Central Middle Atlas of Morocco, three plants were selected, based on the results of an ethnobotanical survey in this region, to evaluate their antifungal activity against five Fungi, namely Fusarium oxysporum sp. albedinis, Alternaria sp, Penicillium expansum, Aspergillus brasiliensis and Rhizopus stolonifer. Ricinus communis L. is used as a biofuel and has many virtues. In
recent research conducted in West Africa, little information exists on its
potential and even less about its growth. The objective of this study was to
evaluate methods of breaking seed dormancy and stimulating the growth of R.
communis. The device used is a completely randomized block in four
repetitions and nine treatments. The treatments consist of control seeds, handscarified seeds (SM), seeds soaked in tap water at ambient temperature for 12
hours (ER12h), for 24 hours (ER24h), for 48 hours (ER48h); seeds soaked in
water previously boiled ( ̴100°C) for 20 minutes (EC20min), for 40 minutes
(EC40min); seeds soaked in water at ambient temperature after scarifying the
seeds for 24 hours (SM24h), for 48 hours (SM48h). Twenty seeds of R.
communis were sown per treatment and observations were made on the one
hand on germination capacity, mean germination time, germination time and
velocity coefficient; and on the other hand, on the growth of young plants. The
results showed that the castor seeds did not really show any mechanical
resistance which resulted in a high germination capacity after soaking in water
for 12 hours. Scarification alone and heat treatment of the seeds does not
promote good seed germination. The average germination time is shorter when
the seed is scarified with a longer soaking time. Soaking in hot water for 20
minutes did not allow the seeds to germinate, unlike 40 minutes. Plant growth was faster with scarified and water-soaked seeds. This study showed that
multiplication by seed of this species could be limited by heat pretreatment.

Our study aimed to evaluate the energy provided by the foods consumed by adolescents from the Congolese basketball school (GAMETIME) during the training period and to compare these contributions to the standards recommended by nutritionists. A food consumption survey was conducted among 10 players whose average age was 15.03 ± 3.65 years. The average weight was 41.57 ± 5.18 kg, while the average height of the subjects was 1.69 ± 0.09 m. The method used was the 24 hour callback. The results indicated that 70% of the subjects took 2 meals per day and these meals consisted of lunch (60%) and dinner (30%). However, the nutrient intake found was 3717.12 kilocalories. While the energy expenditure was estimated at 2827.29 ± 128.87 kilocalories. In addition, the percentages of intakes were respectively 68.95% in carbohydrates (˃ to 60%), 19.52% in lipids (<30%) and 11.53% in proteins (<15%). However, the energy intake found was greater than the energy expenditure, a difference of 889.83 ± 3.38 kilocalories was observed. The energy balance was more dominated by intakes than expenditures. Dans le Cameroun septentrional, le voandzou [Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdcourt 1981 (Fabaceae)] est une culture peu disponible. Vingt-huit morphotypes sont cultives. Au cours du stockage, ils sont attaques par trois ravageurs dont deux ravageurs primaires, les bruches (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae) : Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius) BRIWELL 1929 et C. subinnotatus (Pic 1938). Le troisieme ravageur est Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) MACLEAY 1825 (Coleoptera : Tenebrionidae). Pour limiter leurs degâts, les producteurs utilisent huit insecticides chimiques industriels et 18 plantes repulsives.

Les tourteaux, principales sources de protéines végétales, sont les sous-produits de l’usinage des graines traitées pour en extraire l’huile selon les techniques de pressage à chaud et d’extraction par les solvants. L’objectif de ce travail était de produire le tourteau de Tetracarpidium conophorum et évaluer son rendement et sa composition chimique par deux techniques de production : la presse mécanique et la méthode d’hydrodistillation. Le rendement du tourteau à partir du broyat a été de : 73,63% et 72,50% respectivement pour la presse mécanique et l’hydrodistillation. (P> 0,05). Quant à la composition physico-chimique du tourteau, les différences significatives ont été observées (p<0,05) en faveur de la méthode par presse mécanique notamment sur la MS (91,10% contre 97,63%) ; lipides (10,78% contre 14,46%) ; protéines brutes (24,63% contre 43,75%) ; calcium (1,94% contre 3,17%) ; phosphore (0,46% contre 0,85%). La faible composition chimique du tourteau en protéines brutes du tourteau produit par hydrodistillation par rapport à celle du tourteau produit par pression mécanique suscite la maitrise de la température de l’eau.

Le haricot vert (Phaseolus vulgaris), largement consommé au Bénin et en Afrique de l’Ouest offre des avantages nutritionnels significatifs en tant que source potentielle de protéines, de calories, de vitamines et de minéraux, suscitant un intérêt pour le marché mondial. Cependant, malgré ses atouts, sa production est confrontée à diverses contraintes. Cette revue analytique, basée sur des données de la littérature nationale et internationale dresse un état des lieux des contraintes biotiques liées a la production du haricot vert. De façon spécifique, la revue a permis d’inventorier toutes les maladies fongiques du haricot vert et d’identifier leurs méthodes de gestion. La rédaction de cette revue s’appuie sur une recherche bibliographique dans diverses bases de données de recherches. Les critères d’inclusion se concentrent sur les maladies fongiques et leurs méthodes de contrôle, excluant les données relatives aux maladies bactériennes, virales ainsi qu’aux bioagresseurs tels que les insectes, les acariens et les nématodes. Les résultats de cette étude révèlent que les agents phytopathogènes sont prédominants, entrainant des pertes de rendement pouvant atteindre 100%. L’application des mesures prophylactiques, combinée à l’intégration des méthodes de luttes biologique, culturale, génétique et chimique offrent une gestion efficace des agents phytopathogènes. En conclusion, des perspectives de recherches, axées sur l’épidémiologie et les méthodes de luttes, sont nécessaires pour réduire la dépendance du Bénin à l’importation venant de pays voisins.

Laboratory bioassay trials were conducted at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories and Kiboko sub-centre in Kenya to determine the efficacy of spinosad dust 0.125% admixed with shelled grains, compared to a "cocktail" of pirimiphos-methyl 1.6% and permethrin 0.3% (Actellic super dust) against four important storage-insect pests: Sitophilus zeamais (Motsch), Tribolium castaneum (Herbst), Rhyzopertha dominica (F.) and the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus (Horn). Spinosad dust was applied at 0.35, 0.7 and 1.44 parts per million (ppm), and Actellic super dust at 10.5 ppm. All treatments were significantly (P=0.05) better than the control except when applied against T. castaneum. Spinosad at 0.7 and 1.44 ppm was able to control S. zeamais over the 24-week trial period. Similarly, all treatments gave good control over P. truncatus and R. dominica, with not apparent significant differences (P=0.05) between treatments on the latter. On P. truncatus, Spinosad showed better performance than Actellic super dust (P= 0.05). All levels of spinosad dust appeared to perform better on P. truncatus compared to Actellic super dust, but spinosad dust, unlike Actellic super dust, was unable to control T. castaneum. The evidence from this trial suggests that spinosad dust may have potential in controlling major storage-insect pests, with special applicability against the destructive larger grain borer, P. truncatus.

The length of exposure time to Bifenthrin on four strains of larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus Horn (Coloeoptera: Bostrichidae) was studied in the laboratory at 28 -33C and 70 – 85% relative humidity. Five serial dilutions of the toxicant ranging from 0.031 to 0.0012 g/ml, including a control were used. Mortality was recorded at 3 hourly intervals of 3, 6, 9 and 12 hours post-treatment. Data were analysed using log10 versus probit regression and analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that significant (P&lt;0.05) dosage-related mortality responses were recorded at the different time intervals during the first 3 and 6 hours of exposure. Nevertheless, significant mortalities (P&lt;0.05) occurred after 9 to 12 hours post-contact with the insecticide. Despite the fact of calls for studies to identify and assess the effects of user deviations from recommended innovation-practices disseminated to farmers in developing-nation contexts, such research remains rare. This study answers that call by drawing on prior researchdwhich two years earlier had trained farmers in northern Mozambique in an 8-step, improved postharvest bean storage protocol using jerrycansdto investigate deviations ("reinventions") by users from that protocol's recommended practices. Results from this study found that while 91.3% of participants had used the storage innovation method at least once (high adoption), nearly half (45%) had deviated in at least one way from the eight recommended steps, with none (0%) reporting any failure of the innovation. Deviations consisted of two major types: skipping at least one of the eight steps (approximately 1 in 3 participants) and adding a step or element to the method (approximately 1 in 5 participants). These combined findings of high adoption, reinvention, and storage method effectiveness provide innovation designers and suppliers insights into the potentially crucial role of reinvention for successfully diffusing stored product innovations in developing nation contexts. The importance of further research into a means for assessing when reinvention has positive, neutral, or negative impacts on innovation goals is also discussed.

The efficacy of essential oils extracted from fruits of Piper capense and Xylopia parviflora, and roots of Echinops giganteus and Mondia whitei were evaluated against Acanthoscelides obtectus and fungi isolated from bean seeds in laboratory conditions in Cameroon. Les maladies foliaires, en l’occurrence les cercosporioses causées par Cercospora arachidicola et Phaeoisariopsis personata handicapent la production arachidière dans le monde en général, et particulièrement au Burkina Faso. RESUME L'usage d'insecticides botaniques comme alternatives aux insecticides chimiques constitue une piste prometteuse pour contrôler les ravageurs avec très peu de risque sur la santé humaine et l'environnement. L'objectif de ce travail était d'évaluer in vitro l'effet insecticide et anti appétant des huiles essentielles de Cymbopogon citratus DC et d'Ocimum canum Sims contre Cylas puncticollis Boheman, principal ravageur de la patate douce. Les tests de laboratoire ont été conduits pour déterminer l'effet insecticide par fumigation de ces huiles en fonction du temps et à différentes concentrations. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les huiles essentielles de O. canum et C. citratus possèdent de remarquables potentiels insecticides contre Cylas puncticollis. Elles ont induit 100% de mortalité de C. puncticollis Boheman adultes à la concentration de 50 µL/L après 72 h d'exposition. Les concentrations létales causant respectivement la mort de 50% (CL 50) et 90% (CL 90) des populations testées, ont été déterminées pour chacune des huiles essentielles. L'huile essentielle de O. canum a été plus efficace avec des valeurs respectives de CL 50 = 19,77 µL/L et CL 90 = 68,22 µL/L par rapport à C. citratus (CL 50 = 33,87 µL/L et CL 90 = 72,22 µL/L). Les deux huiles essentielles ont révélé un effet anti appétant se traduisant par la réduction de la consommation des racines de la patate douce comparativement au témoin. D'après ces résultats, les huiles essentielles de ces plantes aromatiques peuvent être utilisées dans la lutte contre les ravageurs de stocks de la patate douce. Cependant, son utilisation en plein champ pourrait être envisagée pour confirmer ces résultats.

In this study, insecticidal effects of the essential oils obtained from plants Ocimum basilicum L., Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Artemisia dracunculus L. on confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum du Val., 1863 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)) and bean weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), 1831 (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)) adults were tested in laboratory conditions. In this context, T. confusum and A. obtectus adults were exposed to essential oils at 10 and 20 μL/petri doses for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. All of the essential oils used in the study caused mortalities at different rates in two application doses but end of the 96 h all mortality rates were obtained similar (O. basilicum 98.3%, R. officinalis 98.3%, A. dracunculus 93.3% against T. confusum adults; O. basilicum 100%, R. officinalis 100%, A. dracunculus 100% against A. obtectus adults). It was determined that the effects of essential oils on A. obtectus adults were greater than T. confusum adults. Especially when the dosage was 20 μL, the death rate increased up to over 95% after 96 h for all types. The mortality rates increased with increasing exposure period at the 48, 72 and 96 h. in all applications. The results of the study suggest that essential oils from O.basilicum and R.officinalis could have a potential as control agents against A. obtectus and T.confusum adults under storage conditions.

L’acarien tarsoneme, Polyphagotarsonemus latus Banks, est un important ravageur de l’aubergine Gboma (Solanum macrocarpon L.), un legume-feuille de grande consommation au Benin. Jatropha curcas est un arbuste de la famille des Euphorbiacées, largement répandu dans les pays tropicaux. Ses graines sont riches d'une huile pouvant servir de biocarburant dans les moteurs Diesel modifiés. La plante est attaquée par divers insectes ravageurs appartenant principalement aux ordres des Hémiptères, Coléoptères et Orthoptères. Ils provoquent des dégâts sur les fruits, les inflorescences et les feuilles. Les ravageurs les plus fréquemment observés sur J. curcas sont des punaises du genre Pachycoris (Heteroptera : Scutelleridae), qui sont largement répandues au Mexique, en Australie, aux États-Unis, au Brésil et au Nicaragua. Ces punaises causent des dégâts importants sur les fruits et provoquent la malformation des graines, et avec elle une réduction de la teneur en huile. Même si les arbustes de Jatropha sont victimes d'infestations d'insectes, plusieurs études démontrent l'effet biocide de son huile notamment contre des insectes ravageurs importants tels que Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lépidoptère : Noctuidae), Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lépidoptère : Noctuidae), Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptère : Aphididae) et Callosobruchus chinensis L. Jatropha curcas is a Euphorbiaceae shrub widely distributed in many tropical countries. Its seeds are rich in oil that can be used as biofuel in modified diesel engines. Several insect species, mainly belonging to Hemiptera, Coleoptera and Orthoptera, have been referenced as insect pests of J. curcas. These insects attack the plant and cause damage to fruits, inflorescences and leaves. The most frequently observed pests belong to the genus Pachycoris (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae), which are widely distributed in Mexico, Australia, United States of America, Brazil and Nicaragua. Pachycoris spp. cause significant damage to the fruits, leading to the malformation of seeds and a reduction in their oil content. Although Jatropha shrubs are subjected to insect infestations, the oil has been shown to demonstrate biocidal activity, including insecticidal effects against several insect pests, including Busseola fusca (Fuller) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Sesamia calamistis Hampson (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Aphis gossypii Glover (Homoptera: Aphididae) and Callosobruchus chinensis L. With a view to developing a strategy for the integrated management of pests associated with cereals in stock in Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the insecticidal activity of the six plants (M. Lanceolata, S. Syzymbrifolium, A. Squamosa, C. citratus O. Basilicum and O. Gratissimum) on the survival of sitophilus weevils infesting maize and rice was studied under controlled conditions. La présente étude a évalué l’effet répulsif de faibles concentrations de l’huile essentielle de Clausena anisata contre le moustique adulte Culex quinquefasciatus aussitôt après application au laboratoire afin de déterminer la concentration optimale à utiliser pour la mise au point d'un répulsif. L’huile essentielle est extraite des feuilles séchées de C. anisata en utilisant la technique de distillation par la vapeur. Les concentrations de 0,25 %, 0,50 %, 0,75 %, 1 %, 1,25 %, et 1,50 % de l’huile essentielle de C. anisata ont été testées sur la peau de dix personnes volontaires. Pour les tests, la peau de la main et de l'avant-bras a été traitée. Immédiatement après application, la partie traitée était placée dans une cage contenant 25 femelles de moustiques Cx. quinquefasciatus élevés au laboratoire. Le nombre de moustiques qui se pose sur la peau traitée durant les 15 premières minutes est compté et le nombre de moustiques effectivement gorgés de sang est déterminé. Les résultats ont montré que le taux de répulsion augmente au fur et à mesure que la concentration de l’huile essentielle augmente. Ce taux de répulsion était de 64,91, 75, et 84,21 % pour les concentrations de l’huile essentielle de 0,25 %, 0,50 % et 0,75 %, respectivement. Les concentrations de 1 %, 1,25 %, et 1,50 % ont repoussé 100 % des moustiques. Le pourcentage de moustiques gorgés de sang sur les personnes traitées était de 5,74, 1,64, et 1,22 % pour les concentrations de  0,25 %, 0,50 %, et 0,75 %, respectivement. Aucun moustique n'était gorgé de sang pour les tests réalisés avec  les concentrations de l’huile essentielle de 1 %, 1,25 %, et 1,50 %. Les résultats de cette étude indiquent que les faibles concentrations de l’huile essentielle de C. anisata ont un effet répulsif contre les adultes du moustique Cx. quinquefasciatus. Ces résultats suggèrent que les concentrations de 1 %, 1,25 %, et 1,50 % sont les concentrations de l'huile essentielle qui ont permis d'obtenir un effet répulsif optimal durant les 15 premières minutes qui suivent leur application. Nous suggérons donc l’évaluation de la persistance dans le temps de l’effet répulsif de différentes concentrations de cette huile essentielle contre les moustiques.

Le miel est un produit  qui renferme des propriétés nutritives susceptibles de stimuler les performances zootechniques des volailles. L’objectif de cette étude était de déterminer le taux d’incorporation optimal du miel dans les rations des poulets de chair. Un échantillon de 105 poussins de chair a été réparti en trois lots de 35 sujets  (témoin, traité 1 et traité 2).Chaque lot a été ensuite subdivisé en 5 répétitions  de 7 sujets  chacun. Les lots traités 1 et 2 ont reçu des doses du miel dans la ration alimentaire respectivement au démarrage 0,5% et 1%, en croissance 1% et 2% et en finition 1% et 4%. Le premier lot a servi de témoin. Les lots ont été comparés sur les variables de  la croissance pondérale.  Les résultats ont montré au cours de la phase de démarrage une amélioration significative (P < 0,05)  de  la consommation volontaire des aliments (30,5 g contre 34,8 g), du GMQ (22,7 g/jour contre 23,4 g/ jour), l’IC (1,3 contre 1,4) et le poids vif à 14 jours (359g contre 377 g). Par contre au cours de la phase de croissance, aucune différence significative n’a été notée dans la ration contenant 1% de miel. En revanche pendant la phase de finition, une amélioration significative a été observée sur tous les paramètres étudiés. Cette étude suggère l’utilisation du miel à la dose de 0,5% pendant les phases de démarrage et de croissance et à 1% au cours de la phase de finition.

La bruche (Acantholescides obtectus Say) infeste le haricot au champ et en stock. Les dégâts causés par cet insecte sont présents dans toutes les zones de production du Congo. Outre le tri des graines bruchées fait par les producteurs, les feuilles de Lippia multiflora L., Cymbopogon citratus Steud., Chenopodium ambrosioides L., Ocimum gratissimum L. et les rhizomes de Zingiber officinale Rosc. sont aussi utilisés comme ingrédients pour lutter contre la bruche. L’étude vise à évaluer l’efficacité des huiles essentielles extraites de cinq plantes sur les bruches. Ces huiles sont extraites par l’hydro distillation sur les feuilles ou les rhizomes à l’état frais ou sec. Leurs effets contre la bruche sont évalués in vitro par test de répulsion, de contact et de fumigation avec ou sans graines. Il ressort une forte répulsion de cinq huiles vis-à-vis des bruches. L’huile de C. ambrosioides extraite à l’état sec a un taux de répulsion de 98,13%. A 0,007 μl/cm2, les taux de mortalité des bruches de 78,75% et 61,25 % sont notés avec C. ambrosioides extraites à l’état sec et à l’état frais. A l’état sec, ceux-ci de 78,75 % et 71,25 % sont observées avec C. ambrosioides et L. multiflora. A 0,01 μl/g de graines, les taux de mortalité de 61,25 %, 50 %, 42,50 % et 38,25 % sont observées avec C. ambrosioides, C. citratus, O. gratissimum et Z. officinale extrait à l’état sec. A 0,002 μ/cm3 après 6 h d’inhalation, les taux de mortalité de 78,75 %, 71,25 %, 51,25 %, 48,75 % et 48,75 % sont enregistrés avec C. ambrosioides et L. multiflora, O. gratissimum, C. citratus et Z. officinale extraites à l’état frais. A l’état sec, les taux de 61,25% et 50 % sont obtenus avec les huiles de C. ambrosioides et C. citratus. L’efficacité in vitro avérée de cinq huiles est en cours d’évaluation en plantation contre la bruche.

Au Mali, très peu d’études écophysiologiques ont été menées sur les espèces ligneuses notamment à leur stade juvénile. L’objectif de cette étude était d’évaluer le comportement biophysique et écophysiologique de cinq espèces ligneuses en plantation. Pour ce faire, les plants de trois espèces autochtones (Combretum micranthum, Combretum glutinosum et Piliostigma reticulatum) et deux espèces exotiques (Acacia auriculiformis et Cassia siamea) ont été produits en pépinière et plantés à l’âge de 4 mois dans un dispositif expérimental en blocs de Fisher avec 4 répétitions. Par la suite, les paramètres biophysiques (taux de survie, diamètre au collet et hauteur totale des plants) ont été évalués 29 mois après plantation alors que les paramètres écophysiologiques ou traits fonctionnels (teneur relative en eau (RWC), surface foliaire spécifique (SLA) et teneur en matière sèche foliaire (LDMC)) ont été évalués entre 12 et 24 mois après plantation pendant 4 périodes distinctes de l’année. Comme résultats obtenus, le taux de survie des plants a varié en fonction des espèces étudiées. De même, pour la croissance en hauteur et en diamètre, il a été obtenu une différence hautement significative (P<0,001) entre les cinq espèces. Concernant les traits fonctionnels, la teneur relative en eau a varié significativement en fonction d’une part de la période de l’année et d’autre part de l’espèce alors que l’interaction des deux facteurs a eu un effet significatif sur la surface foliaire spécifique et la teneur en matière sèche foliaire des plants. En outre, tous les traits fonctionnels étudiés étaient significativement corrélés entre eux. En somme, une meilleure connaissance des paramètres biophysiques et écophysiologiques peut orienter le choix d’espèces appropriées pour la plantation dans les differentes zones climatiques.

L’anémie est l’un des problèmes de santé publique les plus répandus au monde. Le présent travail a pour objectif de valoriser l’utilisation de d’évaluer l’utilisation de Jatropha gossypiifolia(FJG). Des procedés standards sont utilisés pour caracteriser les grands groupes chimique contenus dans la poudre des feuilles de Jatropha gossipiifolia. 2 lots de 5 souris femelles  ont été constitués. Le premier lot (témoin) a reçu de l’eau distillé et le second a été traité avec une dose unique de 5000 mg/kg de PC de l’extrait aqueux de FJG par gavage. 5 lots de 5 rats Wistar mâles ont été constitués et une anémie hémolytique a été induite chez 4 lots (II à V). 20 mg/kg de poids corporel (PC) de 2,4-dinitrophénylhydrazine sont administrés  pendant 7 jours. Ensuite, tous ces rats ont été nourris pendant les 14 jours qui ont suivi l’induction d’anémie : lot I : régime normal (témoin normal),  lot II : régime normal (témoin négatif), lot III : régime normal+50 mg/kg de PC de Ranferon® (témoin positif), lot IV : régime normal+10% de FJG et lot V :régime normal+ 20% de FJG. Les résultats montrent que les FJG contiennent des stérols, polyterpènes, composés phénoliques, flavonoïdes, quinones, tanins catéchiques, alcaloïdes et saponosides. Par ailleurs l’extrait aqueux de feuilles de J. gossypiifolia n’a entrainé aucun decès et n’a pas varié le poids corporel des souris dans nos conditions expérimentales. En outre, les régimes alimentaires à base de FJG ont, tous comme le Ranferon® rétabli partiellement ou totalement les différents paramètres hématologiques mesurés à la fin de l’expérimentation.

L’ecorce de Fagara heitzii est utilisee au Congo-Brazzaville dans la prevention des chiques et  la  peche,  comme  la  rotenone.  Nous  avons observe que la poudre et l’extrait a l’hexane des ecorces de cet arbre contiennent des composes insecticides. La DL50 de la poudre seche appliquee sur le fond de la boite de Petri est de 14,5 mg/ml pour 20 adultes de charancon de mais, Sitophilus zeamays, apres 48 heures. La DL50 du meme compose teste sur la bruche du niebe, Callosobruchus maculatus, est de 16,144 mg/ml apres 48 heures. Ces insectes causent d’importants dommages economiques dans les stocks de mais et de niebe au Congo-Brazzaville. Les extraits a l’hexane de l’ecorce de      Fagara heitzii sont egalement toxiques aux deux insectes. The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a major pest of tomatoes in Morocco. Since its spread in the 1970s, chemical control was the main method of control. However, reduced effectiveness of some of the recommended insecticides has been observed since the 1980s. Méthodologie et résultats : Au cours de ce travail, nous avons étudié le comportement de quatre (4) variétés améliorées de niébé (Yamashi, Mujilanga, IT82D-889 et Diamant) sélectionnées par l'Institut National d'Études pour la Recherche Agronomiques centre de Ngandajika sur le développement de Callosobruchus maculatus infesté dans les graines de ces variétés. Cette étude était menée in vitro au laboratoire du centre de Recherche de l'INERA Ngandajika. Les résultats révèlent que le taux d'accroissement des bruches infestés pendant 60 jours varie de 50.41% à 91.99%. Et la variété Diamant à présenté un pouvoir germinatif beaucoup plus faible 0.75% que les trois autres variétés (Mujilanga 7.75%, Yamashi 8.25% et IT82D-889 12.75%. Conclusion et application des résultats : Cette étude a permis de conclure que la variété Diamant a perdu le pouvoir germinatif après une durée de conservation de 60 jours. Ces résultats suggéreraient que pour une période de conservation après récolte, les graines de niébé de la variété Diamant ne peuvent plus être considérées comme semences. Il est par conséquent important de demander aux producteurs de semences de cette variété de ne pas utiliser la semence de cette variété après 60 jours de conservation sans traitement phytosanitaire et d'utiliser ainsi la semence fraichement récoltée. La présente étude a évalué l’effet répulsif de faibles concentrations de l’huile essentielle de Clausena anisata contre le moustique Culex quinquefasciatus aussitôt après application au laboratoire afin de déterminer la concentration optimale à utiliser pour la mise au point d&#39;un répulsif. L’huile essentielle est extraite des feuilles séchées de C. anisata en utilisant la technique de distillation par la vapeur. L&#39;huile essentielle est dissoute dans de l&#39;isopropanol et les concentrations suivantes ont été testées: 0,25%; 0,50%; 0,75%; 1%; 1,25% et 1,50%. La solution ayant la concentration de l’huile essentielle à tester est appliquée sur l&#39;avant-bras des volontaires ayant donné leur consentement éclairé. For long-term protection of stored products there is a growing demand to replace chemical insecticides due to their effects on human health and environmental safety. Particulate materials, such as inert dusts and various submicron and nanomaterials have been extensively tested as viable alternatives. This is the first study on the insecticidal impact of alumina powder (a-Al 2 O 3) on the bruchid pest, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae). By altering the fuel to oxidant molar ratio (F/O: 0.5, 0.8, 1.2) in an autocombustion reaction we synthesized alumina powders with specific surface area and particle size varying from the nano-to micron scale. It was found that particle morphology influenced survival and progeny number of A. obtectus. The order of powders from low to high efficacy in reducing beetle performance (F/O-0.8 < F/O-0.5 < F/O-1.2) correlated well with increase in surface area, pore volume and diameter, and decrease in particle size. Survival was also affected by time of exposure, the applied dose and sex. The estimated median lethal concentration of the most efficient powder F/O-1.2 was significantly lower in males (LC 50 ¼ 330.4 ppm) than in females (LC 50 ¼ 409.6 ppm). Our results suggest that alumina powder can be considered for seed protection against A. obtectus, particularly during long-term storage, as it is cost effective, exerts limited toxicity to humans and demands no repetitive use like conventional pesticides.

La lutte biologique est une méthode alternative à la lutte chimique ayant des effets néfastes sur la santé des producteurs, des consommateurs et de l’environnement. Les maladies foliaires, en l’occurrence les cercosporioses causées par Cercospora arachidicola et Phaeoisariopsis personata handicapent la production arachidière dans le monde en général, et particulièrement au Burkina Faso. Cette étude a consisté à utiliser une souche A de Lecanicillium lecanii, à des traitements différents contre le développement des cercosporioses. RESUME L'usage d'insecticides botaniques comme alternatives aux insecticides chimiques constitue une piste prometteuse pour contrôler les ravageurs avec très peu de risque sur la santé humaine et l'environnement. L'objectif de ce travail était d'évaluer in vitro l'effet insecticide et anti appétant des huiles essentielles de Cymbopogon citratus DC et d'Ocimum canum Sims contre Cylas puncticollis Boheman, principal ravageur de la patate douce. Les tests de laboratoire ont été conduits pour déterminer l'effet insecticide par fumigation de ces huiles en fonction du temps et à différentes concentrations. Les résultats obtenus ont montré que les huiles essentielles de O. canum et C. citratus possèdent de remarquables potentiels insecticides contre Cylas puncticollis. Elles ont induit 100% de mortalité de C. puncticollis Boheman adultes à la concentration de 50 µL/L après 72 h d'exposition. Les concentrations létales causant respectivement la mort de 50% (CL 50) et 90% (CL 90) des populations testées, ont été déterminées pour chacune des huiles essentielles. L'huile essentielle de O. canum a été plus efficace avec des valeurs respectives de CL 50 = 19,77 µL/L et CL 90 = 68,22 µL/L par rapport à C. citratus (CL 50 = 33,87 µL/L et CL 90 = 72,22 µL/L). Les deux huiles essentielles ont révélé un effet anti appétant se traduisant par la réduction de la consommation des racines de la patate douce comparativement au témoin. D'après ces résultats, les huiles essentielles de ces plantes aromatiques peuvent être utilisées dans la lutte contre les ravageurs de stocks de la patate douce. Cependant, son utilisation en plein champ pourrait être envisagée pour confirmer ces résultats.

Fungi are the cause of many human, animal and plant diseases. In the context of valorization of aromatic and medicinal plants of the Central Middle Atlas of Morocco, three plants were selected, based on the results of an ethnobotanical survey in this region, to evaluate their antifungal activity against five Fungi, namely Fusarium oxysporum sp. albedinis, Alternaria sp, Penicillium expansum, Aspergillus brasiliensis and Rhizopus stolonifer. A quantification of the total polyphenols was mesured out for the aqueous extracts of the studied plants Urginea maritima (L.) Baker of the Liliaceae family, Chenopodium ambrosoides L. of the Chenopodiaceae Family and Calendula officinalis L of the Asteraceae family, to choose the form in which the tests will be performed.
