"Wild World" is a song written and recorded by English singer-songwriter Cat Stevens. It first appeared on his fourth album, Tea for the Tillerman, recorded and released in 1970.
Stevens developed a relationship with actress Patti D'Arbanville and the two were a pair throughout a period of two years or so. During that time, he wrote several songs about her, including the song "Wild World." The song has struck many critics as being protective and caring; the artist's expression of love includes words like "I wouldn't want to see you sad girl, don't be a bad girl".
The song is in the form of the singer's words to his departing lover, inspired by the end of their romance. Stevens later recalled to Mojo: "It was one of those chord sequences that's very common in Spanish music. I turned it around and came up with that theme--which is a recurring theme in my work--which is to do with leaving, the sadness of leaving, and the anticipation of what lies beyond."
Released as a single in late 1970, it just missed becoming Stevens' first hit in the United States, peaking at #11 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. "Wild World" has been credited as the song that gave Stevens' next album, Tea for the Tillerman "enough kick" to get it played on FM radio; and Island Records' Chris Blackwell has been quoted as calling it "the best album we've ever released" to that date.
The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington. Founded by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle, the group in its various incarnations has had an enduring impact on the development of music worldwide. With over 100 million records sold, the group is the best-selling instrumental band of all time. In 2008, the Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Their instrumental virtuosity, experimentation with guitar effects, and unique sound laid the groundwork for innumerable groups, earning them the moniker "The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands". While their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains revered in Japan, where they tour regularly to this day.
Don Wilson and Bob Bogle first met in 1958, when Bogle was looking to buy a car from a used car dealership in Seattle owned by Wilson's father. Finding a common interest in guitars, the two decided to play together, while Wilson joined Bogle performing masonry work. They bought two used guitars in a pawn shop for about $10 each. Initially calling themselves the Versatones, the duo played small clubs, beer bars, and private parties throughout the Pacific Northwest. Wilson played rhythm guitar, Bogle lead. When they went to register the band name, they found that it was already taken. In 1959, they ended up calling themselves The Ventures.
It's a wild world, hey, it's a wild world, hey
It's a wild world, hey, hey
Hold me up baby, for I may fall
Hold my dish rag body tall
Our bodies melt together, ohh, we are one
Post crucifixion baby, post crucifixion and all undone
It's a wild world, it's a wild world,
La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, it's a wild world
Hey, it's a wild world, it's a wild one to be sure
Church bells ring out the toll of our night
A forward and forever backward, forever backward, forever forward, alright
Strophe and antistrophe, strophe and antistrophe, hey
Antistophe, antistrophe, ohh, c'mon baby and kiss me tonight
It's a wild world, a wild world
Up here in your arms tonight
It's a wild world, hey, it's a wild world, it's a wild world
It's a wild world and she's a wild girl, hey, hey, ooh, ooh
It's a wild girl, ooh, ooh, ahh, it's a wild world, ooh, ooh, ooh
And she's a wild girl, don't push me, ooh, don't push me, ooh
Don't push me, ooh, in a wild world, ohh, ooh, ooh and don't push
My wild girl, ooh, ooh, ooh, it's a wild world, hey, aha, hey
Aha, hey, aha, hey, aha, hey, aha, hey, aha, hey
