Wainwright

A wainwright or cartwright is a trades person skilled in the making and repairing of wagons and carts. The word wainwright is the combination of the archaic words "wain" (a large wagon for farm use) and "wright" (a worker or maker). A master wainwright employs several craftsmen, including wheelwrights, blacksmiths, and painters.

Wainwright was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada that existed from 1913 to 2004. The district was mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

1957 liquor plebiscite

On October 30, 1957 a stand-alone plebiscite was held province wide in all 50 of the then current provincial electoral districts in Alberta. The government decided to consult Alberta voters to decide on liquor sales and mixed drinking after a divisive debate in the Legislature. The plebiscite was intended to deal with the growing demand for reforming antiquated liquor control laws.

The plebiscite was conducted in two parts. Question A asked in all districts, asked the voters if the sale of liquor should be expanded in Alberta, while Question B asked in a handful of districts within the corporate limits of Calgary and Edmonton asked if men and woman were allowed to drink together in establishments.

Province wide Question A of the plebiscite passed in 33 of the 50 districts while Question B passed in all five districts. Wainwright was divided on the issue with the vote almost being a tie. The voter turnout in the district was light but still slightly above the province wide average of 46%.

Wainwright (born 6 March 1973 in Warrington, England) is a singer-songwriter from Canada. He has 2 albums released, The Circus Is Coming To Town and Wainwright. He is the background vocalist and opening act for Tears For Fears.

Biography

Michael Wainwright is a Canadian singer, songwriter and musician. He was born in Warrington, England, a small working class town between Liverpool and Manchester. As a young boy he relocated to St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. He began playing guitar and writing songs when he was 10. He founded the band "Flat Broke" in high school along with his brother. He has released 2 albums, The Circus Is Coming To Town and Wainwright. Through Charlton Pettus, bass guitarist for Tears for Fears, he met and established a relationship with Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal. Since 2009, he has toured with Tears For Fears as their opening act and background vocalist.

Michael Wainwright released his first 6-song EP in 2002. It was co-produced by Niagara Falls producer and studio owner Dean Malton at Groundloop Productions. The track "Radio on" placed second (out of 5,000 entries) in Toronto's Mix 99.9 13th annual songwriting competition.
