Queens Village, Queens

Queens Village is a mostly residential upper middle class neighborhood in the eastern part of the New York City borough of Queens. The Queens Village Post Office serves the ZIP codes of 11427 (Hollis Hills), 11428 (central Queens Village), and 11429 (Bellaire). The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 13.

Shopping in the community is located along Braddock Avenue, Hillside Avenue, Hempstead Avenue, and Jamaica Avenue (NY 25), as well as on Springfield Boulevard. Located just east of Queens Village, in Nassau County, is the Belmont Park race track.

Within the neighborhood are Cunningham Park and Alley Pond Park, as well as the historic Long Island Motor Parkway (LIMP), home of the turn of the century racing competition, the Vanderbilt Cup. The LIMP was built by William Kissam Vanderbilt, a descendant of the family that presided over the New York Central Railroad and Western Union; it is now part of the Brooklyn-Queens Greenway used by bicyclists, joggers and nature trail lovers.

Queens Village (LIRR station)

Queens Village is a station on the Main Line of the Long Island Rail Road, located between 218th Street and Springfield Boulevard in Queens Village, Queens, New York City. It has two side platforms along the four-track line and except for one AM peak westbound train from East Williston on the Oyster Bay Branch, is served by Hempstead Branch trains only. Just east of the station is Queens Interlocking, a universal interlocking that splits the four-track line into two parallel two-track lines — the Main Line and Hempstead Branch — and controls the junction with the spur to Belmont Park.

History

Between March and November 1837, the current site of Queens Village Station was the site of an early Brooklyn and Jamaica Railroad station named Flushing Avenue station then renamed DeLancey Avenue station and later named Brushville station until it was moved to what is today 212nd Street, the site of the former Bellaire station, which was used to serve Ben Lane's Hotel. By 1871, a new station was originally installed across Jericho Turnpike from the estate of Colonel A.M. Wood which was on the northwest corner of Springfield Boulevard. The estate was named "Inglewood," and the new station which resulted in the closing of the Brushville-Ben Lane's station was named for this estate.

Queens

Queens is the easternmost and largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City, geographically adjacent to the borough of Brooklyn at the western end of Long Island. Coterminous with Queens County since 1899, the borough of Queens is the second-largest in population (behind Brooklyn), with a census-estimated 2,321,580 residents in 2014, approximately 48% of them foreign-born. Queens County is also the second-most populous county in New York, behind the neighboring borough of Brooklyn, which is coterminous with Kings County. Queens is the fourth-most densely populated county among New York City's boroughs, as well as in the United States. If each New York City borough were an independent city, Queens would also be the nation's fourth most populous city, after Los Angeles, Chicago and Brooklyn. Queens is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world.

The differing character in the neighborhoods of Queens is reflected by its diverse housing stock ranging from high-rise apartment buildings, especially prominent in the more densely urban areas of western and central Queens, such as Jackson Heights, Flushing, Astoria, and Long Island City, to large, free-standing single-family homes, common in the eastern part of the borough, in neighborhoods that have a more suburban layout like neighboring Nassau County, such as Little Neck, Douglaston, and Bayside.

Queens (Nova Scotia provincial electoral district)

Queens is a former provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1867-2013. It elected one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. In its last configuration, the electoral district included the entirety of Queens County.

The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral district of Queens-Shelburne.

Queens (New Brunswick provincial electoral district)

Queens was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It used a bloc voting system to elect candidates. It was abolished with the 1973 electoral redistribution, when the province moved to single-member ridings.
