Love Shine a Light

"Love Shine a Light" was the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 1997, performed by Katrina and the Waves as the 1997 Eurovision entrant by the UK and the lead single from the album Walk on Water. It is the group's biggest success since "Walking on Sunshine" 12 years earlier.

Composition/Great British Song Contest

The song was composed by the group's guitarist and regular songwriter Kimberley Rew following a request from the brother of the group's drummer Alex Cooper for an anthem for The Samaritans in recognition of that organization's thirtieth anniversary, Cooper's brother being a member of the Swindon branch of the Samaritans. In a 1997 interview Katrina and the Waves lead vocalist Katrina Leskanich indicated that it was members of the Samaritans who opined that "Love Shine a Light" "was the type of song which would win the Eurovision Song Contest and [so] at the last minute, [Katrina and the Waves] submitted the song with our £250 [entrance fee]" for consideration to vie in the Great British Song Contest, the national preselection round for the UK in Eurovision 1997.

Shine a Light is the soundtrack to The Rolling Stones concert film of the same name, directed by Martin Scorsese. It was released on 1 April 2008 in the UK by Polydor Records and one week later in the US by Interscope Records. Two different versions were released, one a double disc and the other a single disc.

History

Shine a Light is the ninth concert album to be released by the Rolling Stones. This collection, like the two 2006 shows it was culled from, features no performances of songs from their 2005 album A Bigger Bang. The two-disc version features all but two of the songs played on the two nights; the missing numbers are "Undercover of the Night" (included as a bonus track on the Japanese edition and as a download on iTunes Store) and "Honky Tonk Women".

Shine a Light features several guest performers: Jack White, of The White Stripes, performs on "Loving Cup"; Christina Aguilera appears on "Live with Me"; and bluesman Buddy Guy performs on Muddy Waters' "Champagne and Reefer".

"Shine a Light" is a song featured on British rock and roll band the Rolling Stones' 1972 album Exile on Main St.

Although credited to usual Stones writers Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Shine a Light" was largely a Jagger composition. He began writing the song in early 1968 when the Stones still had guitarist Brian Jones as a member. The song was originally titled "Get a Line on You" and dealt with Jones' ever-worsening addiction to drugs and his detachment from the rest of the band:

A version of the song, under the title "Get a Line on You", was made by Leon Russell at Olympic Studios in October 1969 with assistance from Jagger (lead vocals), Charlie Watts (drums), Leon Russell (piano), and probably also Bill Wyman (bass) and Mick Taylor (guitar). The recording was made during the recording sessions for the album Leon Russell (released 1970), where both Watts and Wyman contributed drums and bass to some of the tracks. However, the song "Get a Line on You" was not on the released album, but was shelved until 1993, when it finally surfaced as a bonus track on the 24K gold re-release by DCC Compact Classics (DCC Compact Classics GZS 1049).
