Score (game)

In games, score refers to an abstract quantity associated with a player or team. Score is usually measured in the abstract unit of points, and events in the game can raise or lower the score of different parties. Most games with score use it as a quantitative indicator of success in the game, and in competitive games, a goal is often made of attaining a better score than one's opponents in order to win.

Video games

In video games that features a scoring, points are usually an optional, side component of gaming. Players may achieve points through normal gameplay, but their score will often not have an immediate relevance to the game itself. Instead, achieving a "high score" and then trying to beat that score in subsequent play becomes an extra challenge to offer replay value.

In modern gaming, the presence of a score is not ubiquitous as in the past. Instead during the era of arcade games, when, because of the technical limitations of the time, games could not be "won" or "completed" but were instead endless cycles of continuous gameplay, points had a much greater relevance. Many modern games no longer even keep track of score, and many that do no longer feature an option to save or record high scores. However, some games (particularly role-playing games) have experience points, skill points, and use money (or treasure) which can all be used to buy/upgrade skills/objects, but these are not really considerable scores, being embellishments to their "growing" characters instead of the numerical evaluation of their gaming performance in a given match.

High Score!: The Illustrated History of Electronic Games

High Score!: The Illustrated History of Electronic Games is a book published in April 2002 by McGraw-Hill Osborne Media. It was written by Rusel DeMaria and Johnny Lee Wilson. The book also has a second edition, published in December 2003, which features a brief history on Japanese and English video game companies.

It details the history of computer and video games, beginning with a page about the earliest computer processors to the current days, this book goes into detail about what was happening to companies like Atari back before, during, and after the Video Game Crash of 1983-1984. It details what some of the smaller companies like Imagic and Dynamix were doing during the same time frames. It also details the origins of some of the more famous video game companies of today, like Electronic Arts and Blizzard. The book is separated into decades, starting with the 70s, and going on to the 80s, 90s, and eventually, the early 2000s. It goes into detail what was happening during each decade and who the leading companies were during each time.

Transformers (film) toy line

The Transformers movie toys were released in conjunction with the 2007 Transformers film, comics and video games, and expanded on the characters and story in them. They were manufactured and sold by Hasbro worldwide, except in Japan by Takara Tomy.

It was expected that the release of a new movie would involve the production and release of associated toys from Hasbro and Takara Tomy. Images surfaced, online, of some toy prototypes, notably Starscream and a new Decepticon who was to be named Blackout, along with packaged samples of movie preview "Protoform" Optimus Prime and Starscream toys. Similarly, fans found preliminary artwork of multiple characters, although it was not known at the time how close these were to the final designs. The designs were significantly different from those of the Generation 1 characters with the same names. Reactions varied widely: some fans objected strongly to the designs, occasionally going so far as to threaten a boycott if the designs were not changed to be more traditional, while others liked them. The issue became a divisive one, as detractors accused supporters of lacking respect for the franchise's history, while supporters accused detractors of being "stuck in the past", and not accepting change. Fans of the franchise have affectionately nicknamed the designs "Bayformers" due to director Michael Bay's influence.
