H. L. Gold

Horace Leonard "H. L." Gold (April 26, 1914 – February 21, 1996) was a science fiction writer and editor. Born in Canada, Gold moved to the United States at the age of two. He was most noted for bringing an innovative and fresh approach to science fiction while he was the editor of Galaxy Science Fiction, and also wrote briefly for DC Comics.

Life and family

H. L. Gold was Jewish, and there are claims that he at first had to write under pseudonyms because publishers feared the readers' potential antisemitism. He was drafted in to the US Army during the Second World War, serving in the Pacific theater of Operations. His marriage to Evelyn Stein ended in divorce in 1957, and his second marriage was to Muriel "Nicky" (Nicholson) Conley. He died in 1996.

His brother Floyd C. Gold, writing under the pen name Floyd C. Gale, was the primary book reviewer for Galaxy from 1955-1963. His son E. J. Gold is an artist, writer, musician and one of the oldest online gamers.

Hölö

Hölö is a locality situated in Södertälje Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden with 1,400 inhabitants in 2010. It lies near the lake Långsjön and is slightly north of Vagnhärad and south of Södertälje.

History

Hölö stopped being its own municipality in 1971, when it was incorporated with Södertälje municipality. Formerly Hölö municipality reached over a greater area near the western bank of Himmerfjärd. The municipality of Mörkö had been included in Hölö municipality since 1952. Hölö’s probably most important industry was Edeby marble quarry which didn’t only export it’s greengrey marble to Stockholm but also to other European countries. The corporation was established in 1922 and shut down in 1978.

Community

Hölö is near Vagnhärad and Södertälje, south of Stockholm. Village services include a food store, pizzeria, cycle store, kayak rental and a post office or "kiosk". Nearby there are some renoun restaurants including Oaxens Skärgårskrog, Skansholmens Sjökrog and Tullgarns Värdshus at Tullgarns castle. Other than that, Hölö has an elementary school with athletic grounds and community library. The Scout Corps of Hölö is a part of the Swedish Scout federation SSF (Svenska Scoutförbundet) and Södertörns Scoutdistrikt. It was founded in the beginning of the 1960s. If you live in Hölö you usually live in a villa, or in the new apartments that were built to cope with the population growth.

Hal (group)

Hal is a Japanese pop band formed in 1996. They have worked with several Japanese pop and rock stars and also have won two Japan Record Awards for their musical arrangements for singer Ayumi Hamasaki (with "Free & Easy" in 2002 and "No way to say" in 2003).

They habitually write their name as HΛL, replacing the Latin "A" with the Greek "Λ" or Lambda.

About

Hal went from music arrangers into a music band and then back to music arrangers, arranging songs for many Japanese artists. Toshiharu Umezaki (sometimes written as Toshiyasu Umezaki) is known as the main member and leader of the band, which had gone through some deformations in their structure.

The sound of Hal is mainly a lively digital beat at the edge where the electric guitars are used a lot, as a special feature and typic in their arrangements.

Hal started out as music arrangers in 1999, and became known especially for the work that they did (and are still doing) with Ayumi Hamasaki. "Appears", "Fly High", "M", "Evolution" and "No Way to Say" are some of their most famous tunes with her. They also have worked with some other artists like Ami Suzuki, the KinKi Kids, Every Little Thing, and Dream.

H2L2

H2L2 is an architecture firm in Philadelphia founded in 1907 by Paul Philippe Cret as The Offices of Paul Philippe Cret. In 1923, John Harbeson became Cret's partner, along with William J. H. Hough and William Livingston. In 1925 the firm was joined by Roy Larson. After Cret's death in 1945, the younger partners followed Cret's wishes and removed Cret's name from their masthead, continuing as Harbeson, Hough, Livingston & Larson. In 1976, the firm officially became H2L2 after years of using the name informally. In 2012, H2L2 and NELSON, which was founded in 1977 as an interior design firm, merged to create a full-service architecture/engineering firm.

Much of the firm's work is visible in Philadelphia and around the country.

Hit to lead

Hit to lead (H2L) also known as lead generation is a stage in early drug discovery where small molecule hits from a high throughput screen (HTS) are evaluated and undergo limited optimization to identify promising lead compounds. These lead compounds undergo more extensive optimization in a subsequent step of drug discovery called lead optimization (LO). The drug discovery process generally follows the following path that includes a hit to lead stage:

The hit to lead stage starts with confirmation and evaluation of the initial screening hits and is followed by synthesis of analogs (hit expansion). Typically the initial screening hits display binding affinities for their biological target in the micromolar (10⁻⁶molar concentration) range. Through limited H2L optimization, the affinities of the hits are often improved by several orders of magnitude to the nanomolar (10⁻⁹ M) range. The hits also undergo limited optimization to improve metabolic half life so that the compounds can be tested in animal models of disease and also to improve selectivity against other biological targets binding that may result in undesirable side effects.
