Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers are a professional American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that competes in the National Football League (NFL). They are members of the league's North division of the National Football Conference (NFC). Green Bay is the third-oldest franchise in the NFL, organized and starting play in 1919. It is the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team based in the United States. Home games are played at Lambeau Field.

The Packers are the last vestige of "small town teams" common in the NFL during the 1920s and 1930s. Founded in 1919 by Earl "Curly" Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun, the franchise traces its lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. In 1919 and 1920, the Packers competed against other semi-pro clubs from around Wisconsin and the Midwest. They joined the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the forerunner of today's NFL, in 1921. Although Green Bay is by far the smallest professional sports market in North America, its local fan and media base extends 120 miles south into Milwaukee, where it played selected home games between 1933 and 1994.

2009 Green Bay Packers season

The 2009 Green Bay Packers season was the 90th season in the National Football League for the Green Bay Packers and the 91st season for the team overall. The Packers finished with an 11–5 record but lost in the wild card round of the playoffs to the Arizona Cardinals. They scored a franchise record 461 points (currently the third best behind the 2011 and 2014 teams) besting the 1996 Super Bowl team's 456. They also became the first team in NFL history to have a 4,000 yard passer, a 1,200 yard rusher, and two 1,000 yard receivers. Charles Woodson was named Defensive Player of the Year for the season, leading the league with 9 interceptions. The defense ranked 2nd overall in the league (1st against the run; 2nd against the pass).

2009 NFL Draft

After finishing the 2008 season with a 6–10 record, the Packers held the 9th selection in the 2009 NFL Draft. With the pick they selected defensive tackle B. J. Raji of Boston College. After selecting Raji, they then traded picks 2–41, 3–73 and 3–83 to the New England Patriots for picks 1–26 and 5–162. With pick 1–26, the Packers selected linebacker Clay Matthews of USC. After the rest of the first day of the draft had passed in which the Packers held no selections, the Packers started the second day of the draft by selecting OG/OT T. J. Lang of Eastern Michigan with pick 4–109. In the following round the selected FB Quinn Johnson of LSU with pick 5–145 and OT Jamon Meredith of South Carolina with pick 5–162. In the sixth round they selected DE Jarius Wynn of Georgia with pick 6–182 and CB Brandon Underwood of Cincinnati with pick 6–187. With their final pick of the draft they selected LB Brad Jones of Colorado with pick 7–218.

2008 Green Bay Packers season

The 2008 Green Bay Packers season was the 89th season in the National Football League for the Packers and their 90th overall. They looked to continue success after posting a 13–3 record in 2007, but finished the season with a losing 6–10 record and missed the playoffs.

Draft

The Packers held Pick 1–30 in the NFL Draft but traded it to the New York Jets for picks 2–36 and 4–113. In the second round they selected wide receiver Jordy Nelson of Kansas State with pick 2–36, quarterback Brian Brohm of Louisville with pick 2–56 and cornerback Pat Lee of Auburn with pick 2–60.

During day 2 of the NFL Draft, The Packers started off their day pick tight end Jermichael Finley of Texas with pick 3–91.

In the fourth round, the Packers traded picks 4–113 and 5–162 to the New York Jets for pick 4–102. They then used that pick to select defensive end Jeremy Thompson of Wake Forest. The Packers then traded pick 4–128 to the St Louis Rams for picks 5–137 and 7–217. They then used pick 4–135 to select offensive guard Josh Sitton of the UCF Knights.

Green Bay (Lake Michigan)

Green Bay is an arm of Lake Michigan, located along the south coast of Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the east coast of Wisconsin. It is separated from the rest of the lake by the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin, the Garden Peninsula in Michigan, and the chain of islands between them, all formed by the Niagara Escarpment. Green Bay is some 120 miles (193 km) long, with a width ranging from about 10 miles (16 km) to 20 mi (32 km). It is 1,626 square miles (4,210 km²) in area.

At the southern end of the bay is the city of Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the Fox River enters the bay. The Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge (formerly known as the Tower Drive bridge) spans the point where the bay ends and the Fox River begins. Locally, the bay is often called the Bay of Green Bay to distinguish the bay from the city. The bay is navigable by large ships.

The bay is located in parts of five counties in Wisconsin (Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Marinette, Oconto), and two in Michigan (Delta, Menominee).

Green Bay (shipwreck)

The Green Bay is the name given to an unidentified sloop that sank in Lake Michigan off the coast of Sevastopol, Wisconsin. In 2009, the shipwreck site was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

History

Based on the features and style of the sloop, it is dated to have been built sometime from 1840 to 1860. The shipwreck is the only known one of a commercial freighting sloop in Wisconsin waters. Added to the fact that there is no historic record of construction of a commercial freighting sloop, it makes the site a popular one for archaeologists.
