30th Golden Raspberry Awards

The 30th Golden Raspberry Awards or Razzies were held on March 6, 2010 in Hollywood to honor the worst films of 2009. The nominations were announced on February 1. Per Razzies tradition, both the nominee announcements and ceremony preceded the corresponding Academy Awards functions by one day. Additional awards for Worst Picture, Actor, and Actress of the Decade dishonored the worst achievements in film from 2000 to 2009.

After the hosts presented Sandra Bullock as the Worst Actress, one of the presenters parodied Kanye West's controversial protest against Taylor Swift. Then, Bullock appeared to accept her Worst Actress and Worst Couple awards for All About Steve, and even handed out DVD copies of the film to the audience, saying the Razzie voters cast ballots for her just to see if she would appear at the ceremony, in comparison to her Academy Award for Best Actress. Bullock was later asked to return her statue, as she was inadvertently given the original, 30-year-old Razzie Statue, as opposed to the replicas handed out to winners. She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in The Blind Side the following night, making her the first actress to win both a Razzie and an Academy Award in the same year, and third person overall, after composer Alan Menken and screenwriter Brian Helgeland.

8th Golden Raspberry Awards

The 8th Golden Raspberry Awards were held on April 10, 1988 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel to recognize the worst the film industry had to offer in 1987. Leonard Part 6 was the biggest "winner" with three awards out of five nominations. Although he did not attend the ceremony, actor/producer/co-writer Bill Cosby later accepted all his awards on The Late Show. The list of nominees follows, with recipients marked in bold.

Golden Raspberry Awards

The Golden Raspberry Awards, often shortened to the Razzies, is an award ceremony in recognition of the worst in film. Founded by American copywriter and publicist John J. B. Wilson in 1980, the annual Razzie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles precedes the corresponding Academy Awards ceremony by one day. The term raspberry in the name is used in its irreverent sense, as in "blowing a raspberry". The awards themselves are in the form of a "golfball-sized raspberry" which sits atop a Super 8 mm film reel, the whole of which is spray painted gold.

The first Golden Raspberry Awards ceremony was held on March 31, 1981, at John J. B. Wilson's living room alcove in Los Angeles to honor the worst in film of the 1980 film season. The 36th ceremony will be held on February 27, 2016.

History

American copywriter and publicist John J. B. Wilson traditionally held potluck parties at his house in Los Angeles on the night of the Academy Awards. In 1981, after the 53rd Academy Awards had completed for the evening, Wilson invited friends to give random award presentations in his living room. Wilson decided to formalize the event, after watching a double feature of Can't Stop the Music and Xanadu. He gave them ballots to vote on worst in film. Wilson stood at a podium made of cardboard in a tacky tuxedo, with a foam ball attached to a broomstick as a fake microphone, and announced Can't Stop the Music as the first Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Picture. The impromptu ceremony was a success and the following week a press release about his event released by Wilson was picked up by a few local newspapers, including a mention in the Los Angeles Daily News with the headline: "Take These Envelopes, Please".
