George Douglas Brown

George Douglas Brown (26 January 1869 – 28 August 1902) was a Scottish novelist, best known for his highly influential realist novel The House with the Green Shutters (1901), which was published the year before his death at the age of 33.

Life and work

Brown was the illegitimate son of a farmer and a woman of Irish descent. He went to school at Ochiltree, Coylton, and Ayr, his academic performance allowing him to study Classics at the University of Glasgow and at Balliol College, Oxford. However his studies were interrupted by the illness of his mother; he returned to Ayrshire to nurse her, but she died, and in 1895 he barely passed his final examinations. He travelled to London and worked as a journalist, contributing articles and stories to Blackwood's Magazine, as well as a part-time editor and reader for publishing houses. At one point he was a staff writer for Sandow's Magazine of Physical Culture. In 1899 he published Love and a Sword under the pseudonym Kennedy King, the same pseudonym he used for his articles. The next year he started work at Haslemere on The House with the Green Shutters, which was published in 1901 under the pseudonym George Douglas. The book was a success, and he planned a second novel to be called The Incompatibles, but shortly afterwards he contracted pneumonia and died at the home of his friend and publisher Andrew Melrose.

George Douglas (bishop)

George Douglas (died 1589) was a late medieval Scottish nobleman and prelate. A son of Archibald Douglas, 6th Earl of Angus, he was elected by the chapter of the diocese of Moray by 22 December 1573 several months after the death of Patrick Hepburn, the previous Bishop of Moray. He held the bishopric for 16 years, until his death on 28 December 1589. He was buried in the church of Holyrood Abbey.

George James Cosmo Douglas was a Scottish Episcopalian priest during the 20th century.

Douglas was born in 1889. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and ordained in 1914.

He began his ordained ministry with a curacy at St Paul's Cathedral, Dundee, after which he was a chaplain to the British Armed Forces. After the war he became the priest in charge of St Andrew's and St George's Rosyth and then the rector of St John the Baptist's Dundee before his appointment as Dean of Argyll and The Isles - a post he held until his death on 7 January 1973.

Brown played a single Twenty20 match for the Turks and Caicos Islands against Montserrat in the 2008 Stanford 20/20 at the Stanford Cricket Ground. He was run out for 4 runs in this match by Lionel Baker, with the Turks and Caicos Islands making just 67 runs in their twenty overs. Montserrat went onto win the match by 9 wickets.
