Everyday People

"Everyday People" is a 1968 song by Sly and the Family Stone. It was the first single by the band to go to number one on the Soul singles chart and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. It held that position, on the Hot 100, for four weeks from February 15, 1969, until March 14, 1969, and is remembered as a popular song of the 1960s. Billboard ranked it as the No. 5 song of 1969. As with most of Sly & the Family Stone's songs, Sly Stone was credited as the sole songwriter.

Overview

The song is one of Sly Stone's pleas for peace and equality between differing races and social groups, a major theme and focus for the band. The Family Stone featured Caucasians Greg Errico and Jerry Martini in its lineup, as well as females Rose Stone and Cynthia Robinson; making it the first major integrated band in rock history. Sly & the Family Stone's message was about peace and equality through music, and this song reflects the same.

Unlike the band's more typically funky and psychedelic records, "Everyday People" is a mid-tempo number with a more mainstream pop feel. Sly, singing the main verses for the song, explains that he is "no better / and neither are you / we are the same / whatever we do."

Everyday People was a soul, R&B and jazz-influenced pop group formed in England who recorded one album and had success with a few singles across Europe.

History

Following the commercial failure of Floy Joy's 1986 album Weak in the Presence of Beauty, both vocalist Desi Campbell and Shaun Ward went separate ways. However by 1990, Campbell and Ward worked under the name Everyday People as a trio. Campbell had moved to Los Angeles and Ward moved to New York's club land. When both returned to Yorkshire, filled with enthusiasm, a reunification, this time alongside local guitarist, Lloyd Richards seemed the right option. The newly established record label SBK Records were sharpest to react and signed the band. The band soon won the Radio One UK battle of the bands competition, and also went to Japan to play in the international finals at the famous Budokan.

The band decided to work with producer Stewart Levine, as they opted for an organic sound for their debut album. In a 1990 interview with the group, Campbell noted "We'd had enough experience with producers and would really have preferred to do it ourselves. But Stewart didn't want to change a thing. He told us at the beginning that all he wanted to do was enhance what we already had, and that's exactly how it turned out." The band flew out to Bearsville, New York and recorded an entire album without sample or sequence. The band's only album You Wash... I'll Dry was released in 1990 via SBK Records. The album peaked at #26 in Germany. The band's first single was "Headline News" which gained some minor interest where it peaked at #99 in the UK, #83 in the Netherlands and #53 in Germany.
