Daily News Egypt

Daily News Egypt (DNE) is an English-language daily Egyptian newspaper established in 2005 and relaunched in June 2012. Under former owner Egyptian Media Services, it was distributed with the International Herald Tribune as a supplement. According to its website, the paper carries “business, political and cultural news and analysis”. The newspaper has claimed to be independent and not subject to government censorship.

History

Egyptian Media Services closed Daily News Egypt after publishing the 20-21 April 2012 issue. All content was produced by an Egyptian editorial team. Rania Al Malky was the last editor-in-chief of DNE, a position she has held since May 2007 after being promoted from the position of deputy editor she held when she joined the team in December 2006. She succeeded Firas Al Atraqchi, who was editor from October 2006 to April 2007 and who had joined following the departure of the first editor Amr Gamal, who held the position from August 2005 to October 2006. Last deputy editor was Sarah El Sirgany, business editor Amira Ahmed, features editor Dalia Rabie, arts and culture editor Joseph Fahim and lifestyle editor Heba Elkayal. The paper included contributions by a large network of freelancers based in Cairo.

Washington Daily News

The Washington Daily News is a daily newspaper serving Washington, North Carolina. It is the smallest daily newspaper to ever win a Pulitzer Prize gold medal.

The paper won the 1990 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for a series of articles that showed the city's water was contaminated and had been for 8 years. The newspaper was then family-owned. It had a circulation of 8,736 Monday through Saturday and 8,969 on Sunday as of Sept. 30, 2007, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulation. The newspaper has been owned and published by the Futrell family since 1949.

On June 16, 2010, the Futrell family announced they were selling a majority stake in the newspaper to Boone Newspapers, Inc. of Birmingham, Alabama.

The Daily News is an American newspaper based in New York City. It is the fourth-most widely circulated daily newspaper in the United States. It was founded in 1919, and was the first U.S. daily printed in tabloid format. As of 2014, it is owned and run by Mortimer Zuckerman, and is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan.

History

The Daily News was founded by Joseph Medill Patterson in 1919. It was not connected to an earlier New York Daily News, which had been founded in the 1850s, flourished under the stewardship of Benjamin Wood, and faltered after his death in 1900, going through three owners (including his widow) before suspending publication in mid-December 1906. Patterson and his cousin, Robert R. McCormick were co-publishers of the Chicago Tribune and grandsons of Tribune founder Joseph Medill.

When Patterson and McCormick could not agree on the editorial content of the Chicago paper, the two cousins decided at a meeting in Paris that Patterson set on the project of launching a Tribune-owned newspaper in New York. On his way back, Patterson met with Alfred Harmsworth, who was the Viscount Northcliffe and publisher of the Daily Mirror, London's tabloid newspaper. Impressed with the advantages of a tabloid, Patterson launched the Daily News on June 26, 1919. The cover price was two cents (equivalent to 27¢ in 2016).

The Daily News (Kentucky)

The Daily News is a daily newspaper based in Bowling Green, Kentucky. It is published Saturday and Sunday mornings and Monday through Friday evenings.

The current newspaper can trace its roots to the Bowling Green Democrat founded in 1854. A rival paper, The Daily Times, was founded by John B. Gaines in 1882 and the newspapers eventually merged into the predecessor to the Park City Daily News; now named the Daily News. The newspaper is still owned by members of the Gaines family.

When the paper was called the Park City Daily News, the name was chosen due to a nickname for Bowling Green taken from an 1892 speech by Henry Watterson. Watterson, there to commemorate Fountain Square Park as the city's first park, opined that Bowling Green might come to be known as the "beautiful park city." Local businesses widely adopted the nickname until the town of Glasgow Junction, about 20 miles north, changed its name to Park City, Kentucky, and the now-confusing nickname fell from local favor.

Egypt (TV series)

Egypt is a BBC television docudrama serial portraying events in the history of Egyptology from the 18th through early 20th centuries. It originally aired on Sunday nights at 9 pm on BBC1 in 2005. The first two episodes explored the work of Howard Carter and his archaeological quest in Egypt in the early part of the twentieth century. The next two episodes focused on the eccentric explorer "The Great Belzoni". played here by ]Matthew Kelly. The final two episodes dramatise the discovery and deciphering of the Rosetta Stone by Jean-François Champollion (Elliot Cowan).

The music was recorded by the Warsaw Radio Orchestra and is featured on the CD Timeless Histories by Chappell music, produced by Clare Isaacs.

Production

The series was a major new docudrama series produced by the BBC for the Autumn 2005 schedule.

In order to create a sense of "seeing the treasures of Ancient Egypt for the first time", Dolling and Bradshaw felt it essential to film at the actual archaeological sites referenced in the series.

Egypt (album)

Egypt is a Grammy Award-winning album by the Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour, on which he is accompanied by the Egyptian Fathy Salama Orchestra. In the original Senegalese release, it was named Sant Allah (Thanks to God).

N'Dour combines both West African and North African musical influences. The record uses instruments from both regions, such as the West-African kora and the Arab oud.

The lyrics are in praise of the tolerance of the Senegalese version of Islam and more specifically his Muslim brotherhood, the Mouridiya. All tracks are sung in Wolof and Arabic and are mostly dedicated to great marabouts of the Muslim brotherhoods of Senegal.
