"Cherry Pie" is a song by the American rock band Warrant. It was released in September 1990 as the lead single from the album of the same name. The song became a Top Ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching number 10 and also reached number 19 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks. The song has been cited by many as a "rock anthem". In 2009, it was named the 56th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.
Despite its success, a daylong MTV special on the best and worst music videos of all time, MTV's Triumphs and Tragedies, listed the song's video as one of the worst.
"Cherry Pie" was not originally planned to be put on the album, and lead guitarist Joey Allen has stated that the album was originally going to be called Quality You Can Taste (frontman Jani Lane recalled this differently, stating that the title was supposed to be Uncle Tom's Cabin). The president of Columbia Records, Don Ienner, wanted a rock anthem, so he called frontman Jani Lane (according to Lane, he wanted a "Love in an Elevator" type song), who wrote the song in about fifteen minutes. Allen stated that "the whole marketing and everything for that record changed. It was definitely driven by the label and not the band." The song was written down on a pizza box which is now on display in the Hard Rock Cafe in Destin, Florida, part of the Destin Commons. The guitar solo was played by C.C. DeVille as a favor to Lane, who was a long-time friend.
The Jayhawks are an American alternative country and country rock band that emerged from the Twin Cities music scene during the mid-1980s. Their country rock sound was influential on many bands who played the Twin Cities circuit during the 1980s and 1990s like Uncle Tupelo, the Gear Daddies and the Honeydogs. They have released several studio albums, including five on the American Recordings label. On hiatus from 2005 to 2009, the band has since reunited, releasing an album, Mockingbird Time, in September 2011. After another brief hiatus, the 1997 touring lineup reunited to play shows in 2014 to support the reissue of three albums released between 1997 and 2003. After the tour, Mark Olson again left the band. It was later revealed that he left because of a strained relationship with band member Gary Louris. In September 2015 the band announced that they are recording a new album, produced by Peter Buck, which is expected to be released in 2016.
The Jayhawks is a 1986 album by The Jayhawks. It is also known as the Bunkhouse Tapes.
Out of print for many years, the album was digitally remastered from reel-to-reel and reissued by Lost Highway Records on May 18, 2010. The re-release features an eleven-page booklet designed by Mark Olson.
"Falling Star" is available on Music From The North Country - The Jayhawks Anthology.
In his review for Allmusic, critic Mark Deming contrasts the early Jayhawks sound with their later work and noted "though it captures some strong and confident performances from a fine band, it's clear they were still a few years away from finding the sound that would make Blue Earth and Hollywood Town Hall some of the most memorable music to come from the first wave of alt-country."
The Vibrations were an African-American soul vocal group from Los Angeles, California, active from the mid-1950s to 1976. Most notable among the group's hit singles were "My Girl Sloopy" (1964) and "Love in Them Thar Hills" (1968). The quintet's members included Don Bradley, Carl Fisher, Dave Govan, James Johnson and Ricky Owens.
The group initially began recording as The Jay Hawks, and had a hit in 1956 with "Stranded in the Jungle" (US #18). After a few lineup changes, the group hit again in 1961 with the song "The Watusi" (US #25); concurrently, they had a hit under the name The Marathons with "Peanut Butter" (#20).
The group recorded a couple of Northern Soul classics since their initial hit on Atlantic Records in 1963. A cover version of "My Girl Sloopy", retitled "Hang On, Sloopy", was a hit for the McCoys in 1965.
Their 1968 track "Cause You're Mine" (Epic Records 5-10418, although originally on Okeh Records) is listed as Number 48 in The Northern Soul Top 500 by Kev Roberts. "This track knocks you sideways by the 4th bar and continues to race against time, leaving you collapsed in a heap of delight"!.
STRANDED IN THE JUNGLE
The Cadets
I crashed in the jungle while tryin to keep a date
With my little girl who was back in the states
I was stranded in the jungle afraid and alone
Tryin to figure a way to get a message back home
But how was I to know there was a record jump my plane
Had been picked up and spotted my girl in lovers lane
And meanwhile, back in the states
CHORUS: Baby, baby, let's make romance
You know your old time lover hasn't got a chance
He's stranded in the jungle flat as he can be
So come on pretty baby just you and me
Meanwhile back in the jungle
The boys in the jungle had me on the run
When something heavy hit me like an atomic bomb
When I woke up and my head started to clear
I had a strange feeling I was with cooking gear
I smelled something cookin and I looked to see
That's when; I found out they was a cookin me
Great Cuckoo let me outta her
Meanwhile back in the states
CHORUS
I jumped outta the pot and finally got away
Frantic and worried about what my baby would say
So I jumped in the ocean and started to swim
But my chance of survival was gettin mighty slim
So I thumbed down a whale who was headin my way
And I reached the states in bout a half a day
And when I got to lovers lane I was almost dead
When my soul was gone, here's what I said
Baby, baby, your man is no good
Baby, baby, he should've understood
You can trust me as long as can be
So come back pretty baby where you used to be
Cause I love you, cause I love you
Cause I love you, cause I love you
Cause I love you,
