Sanctuary (The J. Geils Band album)

Sanctuary is the tenth album by American rock band The J. Geils Band, released in 1978 (see 1978 in music).

A 1998 re-release on the Razor & Tie label added two bonus tracks, taken from the 1982 live album Showtime!.

This is the first J. Geils Band album labeled by EMI Records.

Sanctuary (short film)

Sanctuary, is a re-mixable science fiction film which, in 2005, became the first production to sign professional union actors to Creative Commons licensing terms. It is set in Head Bin, a fiction universe created by MOD Films for their remixable movie experiment.

The film was completed in 2009. Most production assets, including principal photography shot on 35mm film and digitised, have been cleared for free-for-non-commercial use. The project is a superhero origin story, as well as a pilot for a massively multi-player feature film and an open interactive story format, the RIG, being developed by MOD Films in London.

Sanctuary is an original novel based on the U.S. television series Angel.

Plot summary

Angel and Co. are enjoying some downtime at the karaoke bar Caritas when a loud explosion occurs. The gang and the rest of the bar are attracted outside. A building nearby is on fire. It seems that it may have been a diversionary tactic to distract from a drive-by shooting. When the smoke clears, Fred has gone missing.

It seems Fred has been kidnapped, so Team Angel questions everyone nearby. Around a dozen demons were direct eyewitnesses, but each one has a different story. Whether it was gangs, monsters, or a runaway Fred, the team soon realize demons do not make the most reliable eyewitnesses.

Canonical issues

Angel books such as this one are not usually considered by fans as canonical. Some fans consider them stories from the imaginations of authors and artists, while other fans consider them as taking place in an alternative fictional reality. However unlike fan fiction, overviews summarising their story, written early in the writing process, were 'approved' by both Fox and Joss Whedon (or his office), and the books were therefore later published as officially Buffy/Angel merchandise.

Candy (Southern and Hoffenberg novel)

Candy is a 1958 novel written by Maxwell Kenton, the pseudonym of Terry Southern and Mason Hoffenberg, who wrote it in collaboration for the "dirty book" publisher Olympia Press, which published the novel as part of its "Traveller's Companion" series. According to Hoffenberg,

Southern had a different take on the novel's genesis, claiming it was based on a short story he had written about a girl living in New York's Greenwich Village neighborhood, a Good Samaritan-type, who became involved with a hunchback. After he read Southern's story in manuscript form, Hoffenberg suggested the character should have more adventures. Southern suggested that Hoffenberg write a story about the girl, and he came up with the chapter in which Candy meets Dr. Krankheit at the hospital.

They finished the book in the commune of Tourrettes-sur-Loup France, in a cottage that Southern's friend Mordecai Richler rented for them.

Southern and Hoffenberg battled Olympia Press publisher Maurice Girodias over the copyright after the book was published in North America by Putnam under the authors' own names and became a best-seller.

Candy (unit)

The candy or candee (Marathi: खंडी, khaṇḍī;Tamil: கண்டி, kṇṭi;Malayalam: kaṇḍi,kaṇṭi), also known as the maunee, was a traditional South Asian unit of mass, equal to 20 maunds and roughly equivalent to 500 pounds avoirdupois (227 kilograms). It was most used in southern India, to the south of Akbar's empire, but has been recorded elsewhere in South Asia. In Marathi, the same word was also used for a unit of area of 120 bighas (25 hectares, very approximately), and it is also recorded as a unit of dry volume.

The candy was generally one of the largest (if not the largest) unit in a given system of measurement. The name is thought to be derived from the Sanskrit खण्डन (root खुड्) khaṇḍ, "to divide, break into pieces", which has also been suggested as the root of the term (sugar-)candy. The word was adopted into several South Asian languages before the compilation of dictionaries, presumably through trade as several Dravidian languages have local synonyms: for example ఖండి kaṇḍi and పుట్టి puṭṭi in Telugu.

Candy (company)

Candy is an Italian company based in Brugherio, near Milan, which manufactures domestic appliances.

Early history

Candy Group is an Italian privately owned (the Fumagalli family) multi-brand group of companies, among the world leaders in the household appliance industry: washing machines, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, cookers and oven, both built-in and free-standing. Its personnel count reached 7,000-plus at year’s end 2008, of whom about 80% are outside Italy.

Headquarters are in Brugherio, near Milano (Italy). There are 40 branch offices and fully owned subsidiaries. Manufacturing sites are in Italy, France, Spain, Czech Republic, Russia, China, Turkey, Iran and Uzbekistan.

The Group operates through two international brands, Candy and Hoover, and the national ones: Rosières, Iberna, Jinling, Otsein, Süsler, Vyatka, Zerowatt, Hoover-Helkama, Hoover-Grepa. In 1945, the Eden Fumagalli Mechanical Workshop in Monza (a town north of Milan) designed the Model 50, the first all-Italian washing machine, which was launched at the Milan Trade Fair in 1946. In that same year, the Candy company was established out of the initial family business.
