5th Combat Communications Group

The 5th Combat Communications Group is a specialized unit of the United States Air Force. The 5th Mob (referred to as such by its former designation as the 5th Mobile Communications Group) is currently based at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia. Its current structure is made up of three active duty Combat Communications Squadrons (51st, 52nd, and 53rd) and the 5th Combat Communications Support Squadron, which handles such activities as the group's Mobility Training Program (known as Mob School).

Mission

The 5th Combat Communications supports United States United States Air Forces Central Command and Joint Chiefs of Staff worldwide. It also responds to contingencies, emergencies and natural disasters. The group also deploys to a variety of sites around the southeastern United States during training exercises. It has participated in more than five hundred deployments to locations that include Iceland, Egypt, Ecuador, Panama, Virgin Islands, Wake Island, Somalia, Kenya, Bosnia, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Honduras in recent years. The unit has approximately 650 people and can be a self-supporting combat unit. The group can provide its own site security, electrical power and vehicle maintenance. The 5th has more than 100 of its members deployed to remote locations of the world at any given time in support of ongoing operations, typically for 120 days at a time. In addition, the group advises three Air National Guard Combat Communications Groups composed of more than 2,300 people in units throughout the Eastern U.S. from Maine to the Virgin Islands.

3d Combat Communications Group

The United States Air Force's 3d Combat Communications Group (3 CCG) was an United States Air Force combat communications unit located at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma.

The 3 CCG inactivated 30 September 2013, affecting more than 700 military billets.

Squadrons

History

With Allied victory in Europe and the end of World War II came the demobilization and withdrawal of all US Air Force units from the United Kingdom. Their absence, however, was short lived. In 1948, in response to the Berlin blockade, the US deployed long-range B-29 strategic bombers to four East Anglian bases. In early 1951 growing size and complexity of the American military presence required a larger command and organizational structure that could meet the needs of the increased operations (both strategic and tactical.) Third Air Force was activated on 1 May 1951 to oversee tactical air operations from the United Kingdom and provide logistics and support to the Seventh Air Division. The 3d Combat Communications Group lineage stems from the 3d Communications Group, which was active in South Ruislip, England, as part of the Third Air Force. The 3d Communications Group was established on 16 May 1957 and was activated on 8 July 1957. At the times of its activation in 1957 the 3d Communications Group consisted of the 603d Communications and the 605th Communications Squadrons.
