Burkholderia Facts
Burkholderia is a genus of proteobacteria best-known for its pathogenic members:
Burkholderia mallei, responsible for
glanders, a disease that occurs mostly in horses and related animals;
Burkholderia pseudomallei, causative agent of
melioidosis; and
Burkholderia cepacia, an important source of
pulmonary infection in people with cystic fibrosis (CF).
The
Burkholderia (previously part of
Pseudomonas) genus name refers to a group of virtually ubiquitous gram-negative, motile, obligately aerobic rod-shaped bacteria including both animal/human and plant pathogens as well as some environmentally-important species.

Functional genomics focuses on dynamic aspects such as gene transcription, translation, and protein-protein interactions, as opposed to the static aspects of the genomic information such as DNA sequence or structures. The Pathway Tools software is a bioinformatics software system for pathway analysis of genomes, and for creating Pathway/Genome Databases (PGDBs). A PGDB, such as
EcoCyc, is a bioinformatics DB that integrates genomic data with detailed functional annotations of the genome, such as descriptions of metabolic and signaling pathways. Pathway Tools was developed by
Peter D. Karp and coworkers at the
Bioinformatics Research Group at SRI International.
