Nandi Natakotsavalu draws artistes from various parts

IMPRESSIVE SHOW: A scene from the padyanatakam `Sati Ahalya' staged on the concluding day of Nandi Natakotsavalu in Nizamabad on Wednesday.

NIZAMABAD: The week-long Nandi Natakotsavalu concluded here on Wednesday with the staging of Sati Ahalya padya natakam by artistes of the Savera Arts, Kadapa. The State-sponsored mega cultural fete began at the Rajiv Gandhi Auditorium on January 18 with Sri Krishna Tulabharam.

Incidentally, the first and the last plays were pouranic dramas and enacted by artistes from Kadapa district. Like the first play the last one also captivated the audience. Written by Palleti Lakshmi Kumar and directed by the Alluri Venkataiah, the play was based on story of Ahalya, beloved daughter of Brahma and Saraswati. The celestial couple gave Ahalya in marriage to Gouthama, a famous saint. Jealous of it, Mahendra, the King of Heaven nurtures ill-will over Gouthama and Ahalya.

One night, Mahendra misguides Gouthama to the Ganga before the break of dawn and meets Ahalya in Gouthama's guise. She is cured of the curse only after Lord Rama's foot touches the boulder.
