Schilawski goal downs Pumas in SuperLiga 2010 opener

Highlights

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - A first-half goal from rookie forward Zach Schilawski gave the New England Revolution a precious 1-0 victory against Mexican side UNAM Pumas in the opener of SuperLiga 2010 at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday night. The result gets the Revs off to a fast start in Group B with a full three points against a difficult rival.

New England, SuperLiga champions in 2008, improved their all-time record against Mexican clubs in SuperLiga competition to a perfect 6-0-0.

The 18th minute strike by an opportunistic Schilawski came off a corner kick from the right side taken by New England's Marko Perovic. The service found Schilawski at the far left post and he knocked it home between two defenders for the only goal the Revs would need.

After a tentative first half, Pumas threatened on multiple occasions in the second half. Seven minutes after the break Martin Bravo seemed to have drawn Pumas level after pouncing on a cross from the right flank by Oscar Rojas. However, referee Silviu Petrescu ruled the play offside although
replays indicated Bravo might have been level with the last defender.

The Revolution responded on long distance blasts by Shalrie Joseph and Joseph Niouky shortly thereafter, but it was Pumas which continued to look dangerous. Bravo, who came on as a second-half sub was a sparkplug for the Mexican side and engaged in a duel with Revs right back Kevin Alston for the rest of the match.

Bravo's weaving run in the 57th minute set up ex-Chivas USA attacker Francisco Palencia for a shot which was saved by Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth. Then defender Marco Palacios missed on a free header in the box in the 71st minute with Bravo sending a diagonal shot wide right two minutes later.

Shuttleworth and the Revs survived a final scare with just seconds remaining in regulation. Israel Castro's shot from outside the box took a deflection off Joseph and slammed against the underside of the crossbar before the Revs netminder snatched the rebound.

New England next travels to Chicago to face the Fire in the all-MLS match-up in Group B on Saturday, July 17. The match will be the first game of a Group B doubleheader at Toyota Park which will also feature the all-Mexican battle between Pumas UNAM and Monarcas Morelia.
