Leicester City had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Swindon Town at the County Ground on Saturday afternoon.
The Foxes were coasting six minutes from time thanks to Matt Oakley's third goal of the season and Matty Fryatt's 15th in all competitions.
But late goals from Simon Cox and substitute Barry Corr earned the Robins a share of the spoils and in the process prevented City from returning to the top of the table.
It proved to be extremely frustrating for Nigel Pearson's men who were coasting until the dying moments.
However, Town had other ideas and the game ended all square.
Lee Peacock headed over the bar from Anthony McNamee's corner inside two minutes after Aleksandar Tunchev's back header had drifted out for a corner.
At the other end, goalkeeper Phil Smith did well to crowd out Oakley after the midfielder had latched on to Steve Howard's reverse ball.
It was then Dyer's turn to fire a shot agonisingly wide of the left hand upright after another neat build-up involving several Foxes players.
On 18 minutes, Michael Pook volleyed wide of the target after Tunchev had headed clear before the same player dragged another effort across goal moments later.
Peacock fired his free-kick high and wide in the 21st minute after Michael Morrison had impeded Simon Cox on the edge of the area.
Cox should have put his side ahead on 23 minutes but after beating the offside trap, he put his side well wide as Paul Henderson came out to narrow the angle.
Patrick Kanyuka was cautioned in the 29th minute for bundling McNamee's hanging cross into the net with his hand.
Both sides continued to battle for the upper hand but in the blustery conditions, neither side could get their foot on the ball.
Phil Smith got down well to save Oakley's low drive in the 43rd minute before Dyer found the side-netting in injury time.
However, the game remained goalless at the break.
Matty Fryatt had a goal disallowed at the start of the second period for a push inside the box before Bruno Berner's shot was deflected behind for a corner.
Howard was crowded out from Oakley's floated corner on 49 minutes then Cox shot inches over in the 55th minute, although Henderson had it covered.
But the Foxes did take the lead in the 57th minute through Oakley.
The midfielder cut in from the right flank before jinking his way into the penalty area and firing an unstoppable drive past Smith for the opener.
City were buoyed by the goal and Fryatt then came close after turning his man inside out on the edge of the area.
Howard headed straight at Smith from Marc Edworthy's hanging cross on 63 minutes before Joe Mattock shot well over from distance soon after.
Howard was booked for a foul on Sean Morrison in the 67th minute - his fifth of the campaign - then Pook followed suit after fouling Fryatt.
Dyer almost charged down Smith's attempted clearance on 72 minutes but the Foxes did make it two in the 73rd minute when Fryatt beat 'keeper Smith to the ball and then had the simple task of slotting in into an empty net much to the travelling Blue Army's delight.
Town made their first change in the 75th minute with McNamee making way for Barry Corr then Fryatt was booked for unsporting behaviour.
Former Fox Lilian Nalis shot straight at Henderson on 82 minutes before Cox pounced from close range to pull a goal back for the home side six minutes from time.
It then went from bad to worse for the visitors who saw Town draw level in the 85th minute when Corr fired home at the back post after City failed to clear a corner.
DJ Campbell replaced Fryatt on 89 minutes before Dyer shot wide in injury time as the Foxes were left kicking themselves following a late Town resurgence.
