Weather for this species today

A close relative of the Turks & Caicos Iguana, this small form inhabits one tiny remote island, Booby Cay, in the southern Bahamas near Mayaguana. Recent surveys indicate the population is apparently healthy, though estimated at less than 1000 individuals. Goats compete for the limited amount of native vegetation that the iguanas depend on for food and shelter. Rats are also known to prey on small iguanas and their eggs. Proposed conservation measures include ridding the island of goats.

Distribution: Southern Bahama Islands

Size: Males to 335mm SVL Females to 285mm SVL

Status: Approximately 200-300 with juveniles still present. I.U.C.N. Red List - Critically Endangered Restricted to one small cay approximately 1.5km2 in total area.

Legal Status: U.S. Endangered Species Act - Threatened C.I.T.E.S. - Appendix I

Priority Activities: Remove feral goats from the cay and establish it as a protected area. Assess the status of iguanas on the cay and establish a captive breeding program for potential restocking.

Number Remaining: Estimated at 1,000 (no known captives)
