When was Anthony Lyster Liverpool’s dock engineer?
Anthony Lyster worked as Engineer-in-Chief to the Mersey Docks & Harbour Board from his father’s retirement in 1897 until 1913. Little has been written about A. G. Lyster’s work for the dock estate. This is probably because he worked there for only a short period of time compared to the other men who did this job before him.

What was Anthony Lyster’s personal background?
Lyster was born in Holyhead in North Wales and was educated at Harrow school in London and then attended a school in Bonn, Germany.

What was Anthony Lyster’s professional training?
Lyster first began working in the dock engineer’s department as a pupil under his father, George Fosbery Lyster in 1872. After that he worked at Armstrong’s engineering works at Elswick in Newcastle upon Tyne for a few months. Then he returned to Liverpool to work in his father’s department again. There he helped to build the docks authorised by the 1873 Dock Act.

Which docks did Anthony Lyster build at Liverpool?
As Engineer-In-Chief after his father’s retirement A.G. Lyster built docks under the 1898 Dock Act. These included Brunswick Entrance Locks (opened 1905) and Vittoria Docks, Birkenhead (opened 1909). The last dock which A.G.Lyster built was the Gladstone Graving Dock.
