🚨 Is “Green AI” really green? 🚨 There’s a growing conversation around AI’s energy efficiency, but is it tackling the full environmental picture? 💡 A few of our takeaways and learnings from the latest issue of the #CodeGreen newsletter: GluttonAI - 🌍 Sustainable data centres: Indonesia’s Greenship Data Centre uses digital twins to optimise energy use, but adoption hurdles remain. ⚡ Hardware evolution: TPUs & 3D chip stacking promise energy efficiency, but come with cooling & cost challenges, serving as a barrier for the Asian context. 📊 Green AI & Need for Nuance: Holistic examination of AI lifecycle’s environmental harms requires tracking all environmental impacts, not just energy efficiency. 📈 Bigger ≠ Better: The "bigger-is-better" approach to AI should be reconsidered in favour of smaller, resource-efficient models that can offer high performance while prioritising resource-efficiency. ⚖️ Research & Power Concentration: To prevent concentration of power and unsustainable research agendas, ML research must be transparent about resource costs (computation, energy, memory). 🔄 Jevon’s Paradox or The Rebound Effect of Efficiency Gains: As AI gets more efficient, will it actually reduce its footprint or just drive up consumption? The path forward is to move beyond making AI “energy- or carbon-efficient.” We need a lifecycle approach to AI sustainability—one that considers long-term environmental & social impacts across stakeholder groups. More than 2.2 billion people in Asia rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. But Asia’s food system is running on fumes:  💧 90% of total water resources in many Asian countries? Sucked up by agriculture. 🌾 Rice fields? Climate villains. They pump out methane, a greenhouse gas at least 28 times worse than CO₂. 🐄 Livestock farming? A methane super-emitter. Southeast Asia alone drives 40% of global methane emissions from animals.  🥡 Food waste? It doesn’t just disappear in landfills. It rots, releasing even more methane into the air. Let’s be real: We’re feeding billions today by wrecking tomorrow. The system isn’t designed for sustainability, it’s designed for scale.
