Over 90% of the world’s hydrogen demand needs pressure. But hydrogen compressors? They’re costly, unreliable, and energy-hungry: burning massive resources just to make hydrogen usable? Enough. That’s why we’re backing the £14M Series A of Supercritical, a leading innovator in #GreenHydrogen production technology. Their breakthrough high-pressure electrolyser wipes out the need for those compressors, slashing costs, boosting efficiency and cutting the environmental footprint of hydrogen systems. Proud to join this funding round led by Shell Ventures & Toyota Ventures, alongside a powerhouse of investors spanning four continents: Al Mada Ventures, Blackfinch Ventures, Kibo Invest, Niterra / Global Brain Corporation, TOP Ventures (Thai Oil), and Alumni Ventures as well as Lowercarbon Capital and Anglo American Platinum. Together, we’re driving hydrogen’s shift from gray to green, fueling their mission to pioneer hydrogen technology that helps industries transition beyond fossil fuels. Huge shoutout to Matt Bird, Mike Russ, PhD, Luke Tan and the whole Supercritical team! 🚨 Is “Green AI” really green? 🚨 There’s a growing conversation around AI’s energy efficiency, but is it tackling the full environmental picture? 💡 A few of our takeaways and learnings from the latest issue of the #CodeGreen newsletter: GluttonAI - 🌍 Sustainable data centres: Indonesia’s Greenship Data Centre uses digital twins to optimise energy use, but adoption hurdles remain. ⚡ Hardware evolution: TPUs & 3D chip stacking promise energy efficiency, but come with cooling & cost challenges, serving as a barrier for the Asian context. 📊 Green AI & Need for Nuance: Holistic examination of AI lifecycle’s environmental harms requires tracking all environmental impacts, not just energy efficiency. 📈 Bigger ≠ Better: The "bigger-is-better" approach to AI should be reconsidered in favour of smaller, resource-efficient models that can offer high performance while prioritising resource-efficiency. ⚖️ Research & Power Concentration: To prevent concentration of power and unsustainable research agendas, ML research must be transparent about resource costs (computation, energy, memory). 🔄 Jevon’s Paradox or The Rebound Effect of Efficiency Gains: As AI gets more efficient, will it actually reduce its footprint or just drive up consumption? The path forward is to move beyond making AI “energy- or carbon-efficient.” We need a lifecycle approach to AI sustainability—one that considers long-term environmental & social impacts across stakeholder groups. If you’re thinking about AI’s environmental impact beyond the hype, read Code Green: GluttonAI for deeper insights. 🌱📩 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d9UzzqCj If you are already working or thinking in this area, what do you think? More than 2.2 billion people in Asia rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. But Asia’s food system is running on fumes: 💧 90% of total water resources in many Asian countries? Sucked up by agriculture. 🌾 Rice fields? Climate villains. They pump out methane, a greenhouse gas at least 28 times worse than CO₂. 🐄 Livestock farming? A methane super-emitter. Southeast Asia alone drives 40% of global methane emissions from animals. 🥡 Food waste? It doesn’t just disappear in landfills. It rots, releasing even more methane into the air. Let’s be real: We’re feeding billions today by wrecking tomorrow. The system isn’t designed for sustainability, it’s designed for scale. And that scale is eating the planet alive! #DeepTech is flipping the script on #SustainableAgriculture. Orbillion Bio is proving meat doesn’t have to cost the Earth, transforming cultivated meat production with cell cultivation technology. And AlterPacks is proving that waste isn’t waste, it’s a resource. They’re turning plant-fiber waste into 100% bio-compostable packaging. 👀 Dive into the final article in our deep dive series on Asia’s decarbonization landscape, via comments ⬇️

In 1912, French biologist Stéphane Leduc introduced the term “synthetic biology”. But only in the last two decades has this field matured into a revolution and AI is supercharging its momentum! 🔎 At the core of this breakthrough is the Design-Build-Test-Learn (DBTL) cycle, a model that allows scientists to develop organisms with desired functionalities through engineering principles. Now, #AI is taking the DBTL cycle to the next level: → Processes massive biological datasets, accelerating workflows that would otherwise take years to complete. → Identifies uncovering patterns and hidden biological connections that humans might overlook. → Predicts the most effective genetic constructs and optimizes pathways for higher efficiency. Cambrium, a Berlin-based company pioneering AI-designed proteins to accelerate biomaterial innovation. Their AI-powered platform designs and selects from millions of protein sequences, redefining how we create next gen #biomaterials for industries like personal care and biopharma.
