I have helped found and fund a number of very successful entrepreneurial companies, including Cleversafe, Cybersource, Beyond.com, Atlantic American Cablevision, Health Magazine (acquired by AOL/Time Warner), Illinois Superconductor Corporation, Nanophase Technologies, Corporation, AOL, Allscripts, and Cybersource. Many have become either multi-billion-dollar companies and/or major venture capital home runs. AOL was the largest merger in American business history at $354 billion. Here is a video on that topic.
Another fun project was co-authoring a book with my business school buddy Ken Freeman. It's called "Building Wealth through Venture Capital: A Practical Guide for Investors and Entrepreneurs They Fund." I'd be happy to send you a free copy. Contact me with your mailing address at info@vcapital.
What about your background led you to VCapital?
After Washington University (St. Louis) AB in History and Juris Doctor, then Harvard MBA and Harvard Law School Securities Law, I got lucky to find a job during a recession. Joined Allstate's Venture Capital Division and became Director of one of the oldest, largest, and most successful worldwide VC organizations. After Allstate, I founded Batterson, Johnson, and Wang, the first Chicago-based early-stage tech and medical institutional VC fund. Then I founded Batterson Venture Partners, Batterson Cross Zakin, and Batterson Venture Capital-- all for high-net-worth accredited VC investors. It’s been more fun messing up the stables as a VC than sweeping them out as a restart CEO. You can read more here.
Why venture capital as your career?
We have the privilege and the pleasure of "seeing as far as the eye can see" and then helping entrepreneurs turn their visions into reality. I learn something new every day.
