Promoting Quality Team Working within industry is the answer to the question "How can we help governments deal more cost-effectively with climate change?" A simple extension of the existing planning-approval system could soon ensure that future industry client/owners will become 100% capable of meeting their Net Zero targets. This new proposal would require them, and their key project-team members, to commit to be pre-approved, based on their proven records of performance-excellence in relevant tasks. It is the type of compliance-based system that could be quickly mandated by government, with system leaders in industry/commerce being given responsibility for development, management and the provision of training courses. The UK ETS Authority has opened consultation on the expansion of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (#UKETS) to energy from waste (#EfW) and waste incineration. Consultation closes on 18th July 2024. The consultation provides more details about how waste incineration and EfW will be included in the scheme from 2026 - for the Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) only period - with full surrender obligations applied from 2028. In the 2-year transitional phasing period (2026-2028) emissions will only be monitored, reported, and verified and there will be no obligation to purchase and surrender UK ETS allowances until 2028. This follows the UK Government’s commitment in the Net Zero Strategy to explore expanding the UK ETS to the two-thirds of uncovered emissions. As the project lead on the Net Zero North West cluster plan I know first hand how fundamentally important the support provided through the UKRI - Industrial Decarbonisation Challenge (IDC) was in enabling the North West and North Wales to produce a viable, investable pathway for a low carbon industrial cluster. It's thanks to this piece of work that Net Zero North West has been able to shape its forward strategy to support a #wholesystem approach across all sectors and all sub-regions to delivering industrial decarbonisation, something I was able to talk about at the recent UKRI IDC completion event. The cluster approach has fostered the need for, and the benefit of #collaboration, drawing together common themes and amplifying messages. Net Zero North West collaborated with10 organisations across the public, private, industrial and academic spaces as well as its existing members to deliver the cluster plan. Great post from Maria O'Loan here, also the fact that many of the older plants are running well below stated capacity does not equal spare capacity, it shows they’re struggling with increased CV of input material and/or they’re ready to be shut down. Whilst we still export millions of tonnes of material, and continue to landfill millions more then we’re nowhere near capacity.

2024 updated UK GHG conversion factors issued yesterday. A couple of observations: ⚡ UK electricity grid electricity factor shows very little change from last year (still hovering just above 0.2 kgCO2e/kWh). 🚗 Hybrid vehicle direct emissions have significantly increased this cycle mainly due to the updated PHEV utility factors, which represent the percentage of distance driven solely by electricity in PHEVs, to align with realworld data. Findings suggest hybrids are running more on fuel than previously estimated. Conversely, for fully electric BEVs there is a general decrease in associated emissions per mile resulting from newer cars with lower emissions penetrating the fleet. A note to fleet managers to encourage BEV adoption over hybrid.

Excellent UN Global Compact webinar today on opportunities for investing in water to deliver sustainable outcomes across multiple SDGs. Some key takeaways: Despite Thames related bad press on UK water financing returns and uncertainty on how that will pan out over the next 12 months, there is lots of opportunity for investment in water and nature. Some opportunities include: An exciting programme of UK water transfer projects coming to market as PPP style contracts underpinned by separate regulatory settlements. Both Voluntary and Compliance Markets are emerging across water, nature and carbon with big potential to aggregate funding for local based outcomes; the UK is at forefront of establishing integrity in these markets. Opportunity for Local Authorities to convene new collaborations on green and blue retrofit of cities; an innovative GLA pilot is leading the way on a governance model to enable this. Water has an impact across all infrastructure and urban systems - integrated working and assessment of how to adapt to future scenarios is essential. Companies are rightly focusing on decarbonisation but also need to include water and nature risks in their materiality assessments and consider how to work with others, and through their supply chains, to improve resilience. A few key takeaways from the UK's National Grid Chief Data Officer on how networks are transforming how they use data.
