The Devolution Bill, published on 16 December, has huge implications for planning and development. It has been the 'elephant in the room' for some time. We are facing the biggest shake up of local government since 1972. Many existing local councils will be subsumed into larger strategic authorities. These will have wider powers, including strategic planning and call-in powers. Charities and Government Excellent Research from Pro Bono Economics who have published a very useful free resource for charities https://lnkd.in/e_a8ybFN . This says "The 2024 General Election brought 335 new MPs into the House of Commons. For the many charities that seek to influence parliamentarians, this creates a significant challenge. That’s 335 new MPs to research and sift through to try and understand if they might be inclined to support a charity’s cause. "Many small charities cannot afford parliamentary monitoring systems or expensive agencies to do that sifting for them. If hundreds of organisations all undertake the same research into those MPs’ backgrounds, it means massive amounts of duplication and wasted time for already time-starved organisations. 💡 Insightful report from Community Land Scotland on community ownership - relevant to all of Scotland not just the urban focus of the hub project the report came from. 🔑 From my experience of supporting communities with their Local Place Plans over the last year, I absolutely agree that a greater integration and of Land Reform, Community Empowerment and Planning legislation is key. 💵 It is also good to see the recommendation of resourcing for Local Place Plans. Without revenue funding to support communities with this huge task the opportunity will only be taken up by those communities with the most capacity and existing wealth, leading to exacerbation of inequalities - quite the opposite to the intention of the new planning legislation!

**SAVS Helps Local Voluntary Sector Find Funding Opportunities** As a Council for Voluntary Services, SAVS help local Southend charities and community groups develop and thrive. One such way in which SAVS do this is to offer free ‘Tailored Funding Searches’ and access to ‘Meet the Funder’ events. Funding support is carried out in-house by Maria Hayton, SAVS Funding Support Officer. She comments, “Identifying relevant funding opportunities is a part of the service SAVS provides to the sector on a regular basis. SAVS has paid subscriptions to funding databases, which enables access to a wide range of potential funders. The regular funding updates circulated in the newsletter and via media channels offers a snapshot of these.” For new organisations and more established ones, researching options for funding can be time consuming, resource intensive and overwhelming. Maria continues, “By completing a simple form, SAVS capture key data about an organisation and can complete tailored funding searches for them. Not only can SAVS help find funding for a project or service but they can also identify any potential barriers to an application being made. And the help doesn’t just stop there, this information also allows SAVS insight into which funds local organisations would benefit from learning about at ‘Meet the Funder’ events.” Penny Langran, Grants Officer at Fowler, Smith & Jones Trust, who hosted a recent Meet the Funder event at SAVS comments, “As always, it is very useful to visit SAVS to have the opportunity to speak to the groups who attended. It is always lovely to meet people in person and not only hear about what they are doing within the Southend community but to answer any questions they have, either as part of the meeting forum or individually.” Since the launch of the Tailored Funding Search form at the start of April 2023, 86 tailored searches have been completed for 78 individual organisations. The total number of funds shared is 738. SAVS has hosted five Meet the Funder events both in-person and online with further events being planned. Accountability starts with visibility. It’s clear that while Lord Mayor candidates are actively campaigning, there’s a noticeable absence of councillor candidates. 🤷‍♂️ There are 9 councillors apart from the Lord Mayor and deputy, each with an equal say in decisions impacting our community. Yet, they don’t seem to be out there engaging with residents and Local businesses, because they don’t need to. They often rely on larger campaigns to secure their seats without lifting a finger—no posters, no letter drops, no presence. That’s not how leadership should work. Re: State of the Voluntary and Community Sector Report Bromley 2024  Delighted to be able to share with you our report on the Voluntary Sector in Bromley. It includes a comprehensive analysis of the current landscape and a set of recommendations aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and sustainability of voluntary services in our community.    The report highlights key areas where collaboration between statutory partners, funders and the sector can lead to significant improvements in service delivery and community outcomes.     Some of you will also be aware of the Government plans to develop a civil society covenant and the guidance recently published by the LGA/ NAVCA - Working with Local Infrastructure Organisations to engage smaller VCFSE organisations: Good practice guide | Local Government Association  Taken together we believe they provide a really helpful starting place for a conversation about working together to build a strong and thriving voluntary sector. ICYMI: Evidence for prevention in children's services, messages from Foundations – What Works Centre for Children & Families and City of York Council. - We need to think about prevention across the whole of children’s services, and reclaim a focus on universal support and #earlyintervention. - Evidence about #whatworks to improve outcomes matters. But the 'evidence hierarchy' is a fallacy, we need different kinds of evidence for different purposes, including for effective local implementation. - We have extensive knowledge from science and research about how children develop in the early years which drives support for families. - Local authorities are already enthusiastic about using evidence to underpin their work, for example on #parenting, #familygroupconferences and #kinshipcare. The challenge is scaling up reach, and improving quality and equity. - However, there remain areas where we know far too little about what works best, including for children affected by domestic abuse. - We need to mobilise the '#evidenceecosystem' to create evidence and get it used. - Local authorities are leading new approaches to evidence-use, including #Changemakers. Happy local democracy day, all! 🗳 The mandatory reminder to get out and vote today if you can (and to bring your photo ID). Local government and metro mayors are responsible for the services and investment that often have the biggest impact on our daily lives, so don't miss the chance to make your voice heard. As someone who has had a ringside seat for over 14 years of northern devolution, I'm especially excited about the results of the mayoral elections - the first time that every metro mayor in the country is up for election at once. As a Wakefield resident, of course I'll be taking a keen interest in the West Yorkshire mayoral election, but the other ones I'll be paying extra attention to are: ☑ York and North Yorkshire - today is the first time that residents of York and North Yorkshire will get to elect a metro mayor, responsible for £540m of investment in areas including transport, brownfield regeneration and net zero. York politics have always been a rollercoaster (I worked with Labour, Conservative, Conservative-Lib Dem and Lib Dem-Green administrations over a 10-year period) but the formerly solid Conservative North Yorkshire has also become much more interesting in recent years. I'm not a betting gal anyway, but I can't call this one... ☑ Tees Valley - I grew up in Middlesbrough and Teesside will always be the place I'll call home, so I'll be keeping a close eye on this mayoral race, which will be incumbent, Ben Houchen's, third run at re-election. He got a stonking majority the last time around, but concerns around the huge Teesworks regeneration scheme and Freeport, mass shellfish die-offs along the Teesside coast and the national political context mean third time might not be the charm for Lord Houchen of High Leven. ☑ Another first is the North East mayoral election. The North and South areas of the Tyne were unable to reach an agreement on a combined devolution deal for years, until the government put a deal on the table that all parties could unite around. The previous North of Tyne Combined Authority will become part of a wider North East Combined Authority stretching from Durham up to the tip of Northumberland. This is widely seen as a two-horse race between the incumbent North of Tyne Mayor, Independent, Jamie Driscoll, and Labour's Kim McGuinness, who currently serves as Northumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner. I suspect McGuinness will edge it, but Driscoll has amassed significant support after he didn't make Labour's candidate shortlist for the new North East role. Of course, today's hot takes are tomorrow's digital chip paper, and whoever ends up victorious tomorrow must turn immediately to the job of delivering for communities, bringing forward investment and fighting for their places on the national stage. I'll end with a shout-out to the many public servants who are grafting behind the scenes to make today's elections happen. You are the unsung heroes of our democracy! Social

‘Revealed: private schools have 10 times more green space than state schools’ - The Guardian Children at the top 250 English private schools have more than 10 times as much outdoor space as those who go to state schools. The private school campuses include tennis courts, golf courses, rowing lakes, swimming pools, equestrian centres, wilderness areas, and remote camping lodges. In contrast, some state schools have little or no green space at all for their students. “The inequalities in access to green space between independent and state schools, while not surprising, are staggering in magnitude.
