Yesterday I joined a roundtable exploring how regional IP becomes regional growth. Thank you for invite Nick Giles Brad Topps The national lens was there, particularly in contrast to the Golden Triangle, but the real focus was closer to home: How do we turn strong research and innovation into sustained economic impact in our own regions? The room was heavy on capital, patents, university commercialisation and applied AI, which made one thing clear: The constraint isn’t idea generation. It’s conversion. Across regions like the West Midlands and Greater Manchester, we see similar strengths: • Strong research and applied industrial depth • Credible early-stage capital • Increasing spinout capability And similar friction: • Gaps in scale-stage capital continuity • Slow IP to procurement pathways • Complex ecosystem navigation • Public funding cycles misaligned with commercial timelines If regional IP is to drive regional growth, three things matter: -Translation infrastructure. Clear pathways from lab to pilot to customer to scale. -Economic geography. Clusters work when digital tech, health, advanced manufacturing and creative align around a shared and coherent regional economic architecture. -Long-term alignment. Public ambition and private capital moving consistently, not episodically. It reminded me that the transition theory logic underpinning my work over a decade ago remains highly relevant. Regional growth is systemic. Appreciated the candid discussion from colleagues across funds, universities, IP and founders - Rupert Lyle Richard Fallon Ninder Johal DL Catherine Headley Professor Mike Caine Amerdeep Mangat Don-Paul Dhaliwal Benjamin Roberts Julie Myint Dr. Karim A. Bahou #WestMidlands #Innovation #RegionalGrowth #IP

Sovereign AI capability requires investment in domestic infrastructure, skills, and IP. Without it, the UK's AI ambitions remain aspirational rather than achievable.
